Nanda Devi 1978

The 1978 expedition to the Garhwal Himalaya had plans to make an ascent of a new route on the East summit of Nanda Devi (Sunanda Devi ) and then traverse the main ridge to the West Summit and descend by the normal route of that. Monsoons, bureaucracy and a death confounded the plan. Members: Ben Beattie, Dave Challis, Dave Hopkins, Alan Kimber, Dave Nottidge and Andrew Wielochowski.
The video follows Andrew from Delhi to Joshimath, then up into the Nanda Devi sanctuary and onto the mountain.

Thank you for posting this...was it Dave who put this together? It's a very nice memorial to Ben, and the groups efforts to conquer the peak. We had been married six months when Ben left.....a long time ago, life goes on...happy you posted this! Obviously he's still in my thoughts because I'm googling his name!

It was Andrew. Sadly we never met and I never did manage to pass my personal condolences to you. I was always abroad somewhere. Yes time flies but some memories stay to the end.

I first met Ben in a school corridor over fifty years ago.He was our schools newly appointed outdoor pursuits instructor, and little did I know it at the time,he was to become a seminal influence in my life.A truly inspirational man who introduced me along with many other keen acolytes to the challenges of the great outdoors.50 years may be a long time-but the memories-still fresh. “We are the pilgrims, master;we shall go always a little further”

Who knows what mystery the mountains and terrains of India holds. How beautiful it can be. Probably too much for humans to endure. "... and come I may but go I must and if men ask you why, you may put the blame on the stars and the sun and the white road and the sky."-Wander Thirst, Gerald Gould.

The old pictures, happy faces, soulful music….it was very sweet and bitter at the same time watching this. I was only a year old when these events happened. Blessed are these souls who made it to the mountain and some who stayed back in the mountain’s lap forever. Thank you for sharing these memories with us.

Ben was my rock climbing instructor at the Outward Bound School in Keremeos, B.C. It was September and John Dawson was 'on location' with Diane Edmondson making their film. For the full day Ben took myself and one other guy, both of us young athletes and ready for anything, over terrain that looked impossible. He made it look easy. What got my attention more than anything was how much he seemed to be really enjoying himself, he was having fun while presenting a true sense of being fully aware of the responsibility. I was ready to see that and my day with Ben gave it to me.

Interesting to hear from you - I guess Ben got the job in Keremeos via Dave Hopkins who lived in Vancouver for a while and had contacts with COBMS. I worked there very briefly myself but did not know of the connection.

Wonderful video. Can't explain what it means to me, someone whose obsessed with this area of my country. Having devoured the literature and stories of men and women who spent time in her sanctuary, I feel this too would be one of those great stories of what men undertook in last century. I wish someday a party member will pen down the full story. My generation was spent waiting for the permission to enter this land. Lucky and blessed were those who could enter here. Such is the pull of this place, it always at the back of your mind.

I was due to go on a Joint Services (UK) expedition here in 1975. It was unfortunately cancelled because of lack of MOD support and funding. The Expedition Leader Terry Thompson (Royal Marines) was later killed in a crevasse accident in the Western Cwm.

Nice and sad video... My father was in the 1951 french expedition, where Duplat and Vignes disapeared during their attempt to traverse from the West summit to the East summit... I would like to know if the members of this expedition found the memorial grave in the Sanctuary left by the climbers in 1951 ???

I have never heard of anybody who had been there. It involves a bit of easy climbing on the lower slabs then a traverse on scree to ledges right and below the couloir he fell down. His memorial stone is at the base camp - on glacial moraines. Are you related to him in any way?
