"No journey is more sublime. There can be no more awe-compelling scenery in the world then the vista of gorges framing this glorious mountain". So did Frank Smythe describe the approach to Nanda Devi, through the Outer and Inner Sanctuary. It has been a sentiment echoed by all the greats of Himalayan Exploration through the years. The Nanda Devi Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a glacial basin surrounded by a ring of peaks between 6,000m (19,700 ft) and 7,500m (24,600 ft) high, and drained by the Rishi gorge. Harish Kapadia presents a brief history of exploration, peaks, climbs, accidents, environment and the Nuclear affair, in this sublime and glorious land of the Goddess Nanda Devi.
Harish Kapadia, born and residing in Mumbai, Mountaineer, Explorer and Writer received worldwide recognition for his long-standing commitment to geographical explorations in the Himalaya and Eastern Karakoram. By promoting awareness of the unknown valleys, its history and people and by drawing attention of the trekking and mountaineering world to the beauty of their peaks, he has made a unique contribution to the development of trekking and mountaineering in the Himalaya and the Karakoram. He has led more than 35 expeditions and published 17 books in addition to a large number of articles and papers on his experiences. He was Honorary Editor of the prestigious Himalayan Journal for three decades and is now the Editor Emeritus of the Himalayan Club.
He is Honorary Member of several International mountaineering clubs. He has received numerous awards which include Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award from the President of India, Patrons Royal Medal from the Royal Geographical Society, London and the Piolet’s D’or Asia for LifeTime achievements. All his work is dedicated to his younger son, an Indian Army Officer, Lt Nawang Kapadia who sacrificed his life for defence of the country.

Pranaam Harish Sir, I am grand son of Late shree Nanda Singh Chauhan from Bhyundar village. I have the pic of my Dada ji which you clicked enroute to ghangharia. In 2015 June I also got the opportunity to visit Saraon Pataal meadow with study team. I was in team as a photographer. Nice to see this series. Thanks and pranaam.

A memorable slide lec by explorer, climber and writer Kapadia (wonder how a Gujrati Cloth merchant became the greatest explorer and writer India has ever produced). The head goes in a bow mode automatically. Both the presenters as well as equally great businessman climber Motup put the chronology of their climb in the sanctuary ,as if it was done yesterday. The stories of the secret expdn of placing a nuclear devise, which Capt Kohli used to narrate are now clear .

Thank you Harishji for this well documented history of Nanda Devi! I love your approach of factual objectivity, blended with the sense of community that the sport of mountaineering embodies. Out of curiosity - is the badge logo of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation showing the peaks of Nanda Devi? The last frame (at 38:44) certainly looks exactly like the badge!

Please forgive me. Willi Unsoeld was killed on Mt Rainier in an avalanche while leading a group of college students down in a snowstorm Not suicide. I was on Mt Rainier that day. I worked for the Park Service and am well aware of the circumstances.. He may have made a poor decision but it was not suicide.

Very nice presentation, but there are a couple minor errors regarding the US expedition in 1976. First, you state that John Roskelley summited Nanda Devi 5 days after Ms. Nanda Devi Unsoeld died on the mountain. (30:15 to 30:40) In fact, John (and 2 others) summited on September 1, 1976, and Ms. Unsoeld died a week later, on September 8. Second, you state that Ms. Unsoeld's father, Willi, was so upset about the loss of his daughter, that he was found dead two years later at the bottom of a rock, perhaps by accident or suicide. (31:05 to 31:20). In fact, Willi died in a snow avalanche on Mt. Rainier, while leading a group of 20 or so students from the college where he was a professor. We cannot know whether he was suicidal at the moment in time, but it is more reasonable to conclude he was taking his leadership role seriously, and was trying to get everyone to safety in a winter storm, including himself. His group was quite close to a well-established mountain cabin (Camp Muir) when the avalanche struck. Willi decided to take a shorter, though more risky, route to safety. (One of his students died in the same avalanche; the others survived). A prior commenter, Mr. Langlois, makes a similar point.
