I shared your video to two of my friends to show them they can stop doing water changes if they set their substrate up better and get more plants. My question is, since I am new to your videos, I have not layered my substrates like you have but I did redo two with the FLuval volcanic gravel. Is that going to be enough? My short plants seem to be estalishing and the stem plants are taking off.. would this work for a filterless system? Second question: Quarantine tanks. I now have a 10 gallon, but its bare and has a bubbler. I suppose I could reset this with proper gravel and make it be a plant grower while it is vacant of fish? Keep it fertilized? It wont have critters in it. How does it keep a biosystem? Love your videos and enthusiasm! I think Im ready now to try cherry shrimp for the third time and this time they will live...
You’re such a great teacher! Appreciate you taking the time to explain design elements and why some things may not look right and how to fix it. Enjoy these low tech builds.
Yes. As soon as I discovered him... watch everything he ever did. Took a while 😂 Even went over a few more than once. What sets him apart is his enthusiasm and excitement... he is so much more interesting than others in this field...
This is amazing and love the idea of no cleaning and no filter. Thank you going over it so well and the step by step process. It’s now inspired me to create a similar project which me and my 4 year old can do together. She’s very excited
You can watch "father fish" youtube channel .Has some good videos.I also watch his videos as he encourages this types of "almost" self-sutaining ecosystem tanks.
I just wanna say thank you for doing this. You are the one that inspired me to actually do research and try to give fish the best life they could have! Tomorrow im setting up a tank for a betta fish that should arrive in about 2 weeks, you really are the one that inspired me to try out this new hobby and again, thank you!! 🥹🫶🫶
Another nice tank! And nothing wrong with another Endler tank! I've got 5 tanks ranging from 10g - 75g, and right now my favorite is my 10g office tank with just Endlers of all sizes, snails, and some yellow shrimp. I've been fishkeeping 45 years, since I was about 10. Started with elementary school guppies we got to bring home, then moved on to tetras, cichlids, and what not, and it wasn't until the past year I rediscovered livebearers Your channel helped get me back into them.
Really debating putting a tank in my office. I’m about halfway through my first tank in about 8 years for my private living room and would love a nano tank for my office at work. But… I’m worried I won’t get anything done if I have shrimp to stare at!
@@tumsfestival8027 Tank has been running almost a year as originally configured! Plants have all filled in nicely. The only endlers I've lost have been jumpers, and only males. I think they chase each other and get too excited. Tank has a glass cover, but they were jumping out the narrow gap between the glass cover and the filter. I put in a baffle a couple months ago that would hopefully deflect them back into the tank, and no jumpers since then. Endlers breed a lot, and so far, the population is self-sustaining and even increasing. Besides daily feeding, the tank takes 20 minutes a week to maintain. 50% water change, rinse the filter media, scrape the glass, and done! I highly recommend an office tank as a good stress reliever!
Try it! If it becomes a big distraction, you can always take it home. I adapted to mine and it doesn't distract me too much. I do like to look at it during a conference call, but it actually helps me focus, since I'm an accountant usually thinking abstract thoughts. @@Faymous9
Fantastic. But, I love seeing a few minutes video of your completed tanks at the end, as you have done on other scapes. Would you please keep doing this?
I am so happy I have found your channel! I used to have two 50's, a 30 and some smaller baby raising tanks, 10's.... but its such a shock to see someone who does the fresh water fish instead of the complications of the salt water tanks. I love fresh water fish, there is so much variety in them and they are so easy to care for -- but I'm in an apartment now and didn't think I wanted to hassle with tiny tanks, they take more cleaning than a big tank! But you have proven me wrong, this is a great way to do a nano tank, no hassle, no worry, it cleans itself this way. Now I know that I should concentrate more on the plants and do snail and shrimps for cleaning, and that I don't have to have the heaters and pumps and tank hoods and undergravel filter systems.... and I could have my cardinals or neons or other tiny fish, I miss them sooo much...! and those flame endlers are stunning! umm.... even if I don't do a tank for a year or so, now I have your channel -- a place to get so many ideas for tiny tanks in the meantime!! I'm gong to be watching your current and your past videos, thanks for so much great information!!
Went to Fish street at my city. It is famous for having all sorts of tanks, plants and fish . Bought some filter and came home. Was thinking abt setting up a small tank sometime soon and here i see MD pull up a new video
Endlers are awesome, but I love love love chili rasboras for nanos. And shrimp, of course! Just a note about the snails...don't put too many in at once in a small tank! I crashed my cycle in one ten gallon by tossing a man's handful of ramshorns...just plop and even with a good filter I got an ammonia spike.
About a month ago now I did a little tank like this. I wish I had some floating plants like you have. The only thing I have was duckweed .😢 it is definitely growing good now
Great presentation! Thanks so much for the tips about floating plants, adding the shrimp first, conditioning the water, packing plants in, etc. so much useful info in here. Great job and beautiful, too. Youre an artist.
Beautiful tank! I admit, I didn't care for the look of these rocks, when you first put them in, but after the plants went in, I absolutely love them! Totally changed the look, it did! Shame on me for having doubts, MD! :) I have a regular 5 gallon tank that I didn't know what to do with, as far as decorating that is. Now I know I will be able to do it, and it'll come out beautiful! Thanks for doing this one! Do you happen to have a link to that light you put on it, to demonstrate the build, by any chance?
I had to go shopping a couple of days ago because…. I got 6 Bosemani Rainbowfish, 6 Blue Tuxedo Platies and a couple of Black Neon Tetras. I’m looking forward to seeing them grow and get their colours. I could never have an aquarium on my desk. I’d never get anything done.
I've noticed most of your tanks don't have lids - how do you keep fish/shrimp from jumping out? Thank you for your time and love your videos keep them coming
I would always have a filter and heater even the smallest possible sizes available. I like the lighting apparatus too though it looks a bit short in length!
Could you please do a follow up video to show how this tank is doing now, I am trying to replicate your setup and thinking of buying only one gender species to avoid over breeding. Thanks
It's one o'clock and i have to get up sooooo early tomorrow but i can't stop marvelling about your beautiful nano tank and falling deeply in love with it and the fishnerds in the shop 🥰
Hej! I love these ❤ I owned two and when I bought them they were probably 3-4 cm and I bought them in 2016. And one lived 3 years and the other one lived until around last year! ❤
I am loving all the new builds and love seeing you so happy filling out that beautiful new studio! Incredible tank per usual, even on the small scale compared to all the big builds recently!
Bosh. I have a smaller tank than that, only 2.5 gallons. It houses two African dwarf frogs. It is in a north-facing window to avoid direct sun. It has a heater that runs from a USB outlet. The key is what ecologists call "spatial heterogeneity" meaning lots of places for the animals to go so they don't get bored. You can do this by piling up rocks. Java fern is a good plant. I see no need to make a video. Done.
Thick substrate layer is to get the anaerobic bacteria helping with the filtration. Assisting with nitrate conversion and sulfate conversion, and the biproducts of conversion escape the tank as gasses. You're right though, with low population short term tanks that you enjoy the plants provide all the purification you need.
I only use water and a plain paper towel to clean my tank glass . . Cleans it right up/off, and I'd be afraid I might kill my fish with any "cleaner" . What are you confident enough in to use on your tanks? (in other words, What did you use?)
I love it! If only I had small bits of the right substrate, and an amazing inventory of wood or rocks. The light appears to be perfect! The Endlers are to die for. Ya did good! It was fun watching it come together. Thanks!
In my youth I had a 20 gallon long tank and completely over stocked it with 30 or 40 fish of all kinds; barbs, angels, different kinds of tetras, betta, Gouramis, swordtails, Kuhli Loachs, catfish, lots of guppies and tons of plants. I had a heater with an under gravel filter and a side mount filter. No fancy equipment and no fancy sand just a 3 to 4 inch coarse gravel sand. Worked just fine. I know I some more fish that I can't remember like bumble bee fish and others.
If I could do anything like this I would make one. But I have no idea where to start and where I can get all the stuff you put in there :). Many years ago I had a fishtank with filter but I could not get the plants to grow and have a green heaven for fish. I will have to check more off your video's :). I also like shrimp :D
Great video, I'd love to see a tank with Dwarf Emeralds or Celestial Pearl Danios. In fact it would be amazing to see one of your new big tanks have a huge shoal of them, instead of 10 or so in a Nano tank. Throw in some Badis and you could have a Myanmar lake shore biotype in the making!
I thank you so much because you give us the info and web-pages below to see which item is best for us. I've been searching what size stone to buy for my cube tank and here it is, Landen tonwa stones for small tanks. Thank you.
Awesome video! You are the reason I have this new hobby and I thank you for this 😊 I was on holidays in UK near Wellington so I had to stop at Maidenhead Aquatics to see the shop and the fish tanks you made there. Plus, I'm bring back in France some of your red root floaters 😂😁
You make planting look so EASY. I am having the hardest time to get plants to stay in the substrate while trying to pull out my tweezers, ugh! I have been watching your videos for almost a year now, and have always paid close attention to how you hold the tweezers. Still I am having issues. The only thing I can think of now is: are the insides of your tweezers smooth? Mine are a bit toothy, for lack of better word. I guess to have a better grip on things. But the downside is that if feels like the plants stay stuck to it more easily as I am trying to pull the tweezers back out. Any thoughts or advice?
As an artist and a chef Im obsessed with the rule of 3s. Your ALWAYS picking EVEN numbers. Drives me absolutely batty. 😂 Aesthetically its always 3's or 7's. No more. No less My old chef would ream me for using 4's or 6's or 8's when decorating a plate. And as a jeweler any groupings of stones must be ODD numbers 😂
Looking at your channel make me learn much more about nano tech aquarium.. Im from malaysia and will starting my own nano tech aquarium in a short month.. Really greatfull to see all you video about how to start a nano tech aqurium and still learning from you video on how to maintaining the nano tech.. And already follow up you channel for a while now🇲🇾😁👍keep it up
Just wondering what you recommend for a substitute for the nutribase in the US? Also, would you have a “shopping” list of plants for this video. I checked through all the links, no luck. Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to create!!
