Nanoparticles for a better cancer therapy 

Empa researcher Lukas Gerken develops nanoparticles made of metal oxides. His goal is to improve radiotherapy for cancer patients through so-called radio-enhancers. These enable a more efficient and gentle radiation treatment. Recently, the scientist was able to produce the valuable nanoparticles on an industrial scale for the first time. The nanoparticles can now be visualized and analyzed by electron microscopy - even inside cancer cells. Gerken thus wants to facilitate the clinical use of nanoparticle-based radio-enhancers.
