Naomi Campbell tells Channel 4 News she believes the fashion world discriminates against models of colour - and is reluctant to book non-white models for shows. .
I love how Naomi keeps talking about "balance" and "diversity". She wants everyone from every background to be included and have a chance. She's fair and has a good heart.
ah, that's what they sell you. but in reality 'diversity' literally just means dispossessing white ppl in our own cultural spaces. whether it be the fashion we create down to our very countries and societies. diversity was sold to western whites on the lie that it would come at no cost to us, when that lie falls apart whites go fash
this interviewer is the worst example of what an interviwer should be like. he was patronizing, trying to bait the interviewee, you could definitly see that he was trying to create deeper problems for naomi. IF I WAS HER I WOULD WALK OUT OF THERE.
I wish I could teleport back to 2013 and give him a taste of his own nasty medicine. Someone should have been there to jump in like Venus Williams dad and yell up in his face 😂
@@darkprettylikebriamileslup7239 I wasn't gonna say anything, but don't respond to this young lady beautiful lol. She literally been under almost every Naomi video chatting. Don't give her your energy.
Love the way this asshole tried to change the subject from the lack of black models in fashion to Naomi's "anger". They always avoid addressing racism and try to turn it around on us or run to a stereotype. She wasn't going to allow him to paint her as the "angry black woman", she saw right through it. Good for her for calling him on it. Being passionate about an issue does not mean you're angry.
100% agree! Now between you and me badgyrl310, I want to know what the fuck did that have to do with ANYTHING about the topic at hand? Was rachett from the start.
bluevegas01 The media is always playing those games by bringing up things in a celebrities personal life that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
Shenyae T and your comment is hateful and racist Pretty sure Naomi wouldn’t encourage you to be saying things like that People are horrible dear, skin color has nothing to do with it. Stop perpetuating more hate by being racist to white people.
Wow, she was incredibly patient with that interviewer''s inane quesitons and condescending tone. I heard someone say once that the white male style of argument is to antagonize you until you snap, then blame you for being angry and "irrational." That's so painfully true, and this is a perfect example.
Nobody is blaming her on being angry. You should realize that Naomi has a long history of violence and bad temper and it's been that way since the late 90's. Get real.
The interviewer is the one that seemed angry. She's just passionate about what she's talking about. However, he was intentionally making her angry by interrupting her and acting confrontational.
The individual interviewing Naomi Campbell is Jonathan Rugman and he is one Channel 4's foreign affairs correspondents. Given his lack of awareness and insight into racism and the dynamics of racism in an international industry plus his willingness to dismiss, patronise and dredge up insulting stereotypes, I was curious about the quality of his other journalism. If you can be bothered to go to Channel 4, you'll see that, apart from being an annoying knob, he's a lightweight who usually makes very dull reports and is unable to offer much in the way of knowledge or analysis. I'm guessing that HE was angered (and intimidated) by Naomi Campbell's clarity, incisiveness and calm.
The interviewer was obviously asking questions intending to provoke her - she did an amazing job considering the horrible stuff he was firing at her, and I wholly agree that we need much more diversity in the fashion industry - as an English resident, I know there is now so much ethnic diversity within the UK - we need to echo this and represent all cultural backgrounds within fashion.
why do you think non whites are entitled to model european clothing? 'diversity' literally just means dispossessing white ppl in our own cultural spaces. whether it be the fashion we create down to our very countries and societies. diversity was sold to western whites on the lie that it would come at no cost to us, when that lie falls apart whites reject. if non whites want to represent their culture and true ethnic diversity they should create their own fashion houses based on their own culture, instead of trying to brow beat whites into handing over ours.
But that's what interviewers do. They ask every question about a person of what happened, when it happened, or why it happened. That's their job and if you being a crybully about it, then you shouldn't act like one in the first place.
She handled herself well here and put that interviewer in his place. His defensiveness and complete inability to even try to understand where she was coming from was frustrating. It's as though he took her grievances personally.
how do you think naomi or any other black person would take it if non blacks were advocating for black dispossession in black peoples own cultural spaces to the benefit of non blacks?
'diversity' literally just means dispossessing white ppl in our own cultural spaces. whether it be the fashion we create down to our very countries and societies. diversity was sold to western whites on the lie that it would come at no cost to us, when that lie falls apart whites go fash.
@Lovely Wahu I don't need to. Me pointing out Naomi's utopia by having more black models to push away non-black models does not make me crazy or wrong.
@EmmyV2002 the fact that you and the interviewer are struggling so hard to understand the basics of what she is saying makes me believe there’s something very concerning about your beliefs on race and racism. Smh. She wants everyone to have a far shot. But for those bashing her for it’s clear they would prefer a mediocre white model to have the spot instead of a better model who is brown or black skin. Smh it’s obvious that’s what those who are mad about her calling for more diversity. Especially in the industry at the time of the interview.
I'm really not that into fashion or whatever but I've seen videos of Naomi walking because everyone said she was amazing and she totally was. Now I see this interview - damn she is just as fierce! Slay!
I liked how Naomi handled the interview conversation. He was talking mess that had nothing to do with the issue. Naomi refused and continue to stay of subject.
Naomi is very confident and articulate, if people are threatened by that then that's not her problem, I really like Naomi's passion she should probably let people finish their sentences though haha!
Several attempts to twist her message by the interviewer and Naiomi dodged ALL of them. lol. She is the definition of a boss. She is an expert on not allowing others to twist her words in order to convey the true meaning of what she is saying.
They don't Like Naomi because she's a Model, A "Black" model, who are 1 of the few that broke the Mole of Expectation that Model's are to Stfu and just be pretty for the camera.. And Now since she don't just allow people to treat her like a non living utility, She the ' ANGRY BLACK WOMAN". Typical.
Then again, the same old terrible excuses. I don't like Naomi because she's black, I don't like her because she's a racist, disrespectful, rude, condescending spoiled brat who's just insecure of herself and people don't like her for that either.
The reporter was coming for her but she handled it well. Kudos! I hate when people try to rationalize things like well you are successful why do you care? Or you have a rep for being angry lol...what did that have to do with what she is talking about? For people saying include other cultures; SHE IS she said models of color that is inclusive of all people of color. And no it is not a matter of talent, people of color are rarely included regardless of capability so she's right.
There appears to be more working black models than Asian I think...I think actually Asians have it worse, I cannot think of any Asian model who's success is on-par with Naomi's or Iman's....but yes I whole-heatedly agree with Naomi.
not only that. "Asian" is such an incorrect term too. it's basically Chinese models. very fair skinned Chinese models, some who are even whiter than white models in their skin. Asia has way more skin diversity than that.
Good job Naomi! I've gained so much respect for you recently. Every interview I've seen shows how smart, articulate and full of passion you are. You know your stuff! Keep shining star girl. You mastered that trickster of an interviewer.
Speaking to the comment below, a designer who mixes races on the runway because its important to them is adding a whole layer of intelligence and aesthetics to their message . There are plenty of black models who are good enough, that's not the issue. Additionally, at Parsons more than half of our fashion models in drawing class are of African descent, there is naturally so much grace and movement in the body. Anyone who doesn't care whether their cast is diverse or not is sending a powerful message, which you don't hear if you don't care either. I hear it. I feel it. Speaking up helps open the eyes and ears, educating those who may not have been aware.
you see how he tried to make it seem like she's an angry black women? she's not angry, she is passionate. Naomi is one of the biggest super models in the world. yes she gets work, yes she's had a great career however she wants to see other women of color prosper too. she could easily sit back and not give a shit but she cares. it's a shame that these designers are still not more diverse in this day and age.
I'm a fan of Naomi Campbell. I like how she handled herself during this interview. The interviewer knows precisely what's he's doing. First of all, the interviewer knows that Naomi Campbell is right about racism in the fashion industry. Not only that, he tried to gaslight Naomi during this interview. In other words, gaslighting means you know a person is telling the truth but you try to make them a villain for telling the truth. And by trying to make them a villain for telling the truth, the person begins to doubt themselves. And he subliminally was calling her "ANGRY BLACK WOMAN" because she spoke out. She didn't fall for his nonsense. Whether you agree and/or disagree with Naomi Campbell as a human being, she handled this interview well.
3:19 during the interview he says "this is your fellow black woman". I could not believe that he said that I'm so happy that Naomi drag his ass she was eloquent and well spoken and she put him in his place.
I think that Naomi handled the questions well despite the interviewer's attempt to take the interview in an angry direction, and that is not where she was coming from at all!!!
she's so brave for speaking out about this. I hate when people call her angry or bitchy because she's not. she had to claw her way to the top of an industry who didn't want her there because of her skin color. she needed to stand up and speak up or she wouldn't be anywhere near successful as she is today. she will always be an amazing and inspiring woman.
I was modeling in a show room and a coworker (model) was showing clothes to a client and the client said the outfit looks too Asian. Mind u it was a plain suit in beige....the model was Asian. I was shookkkkkk.
The 82% white models on the runway has increased to about 87% around this time, we really do need diversity, especially for Asians and Blacks because they aren't appearing very often, especially males too!
This is so confusing!! People who live in Europe are majority white. Versace, Gucci, D&G are ITALIANS, Italians are white, so models are white, if you go to Dakar to a fashion show - all the models will be black. What is the big deal? If you think that Europeans are racist, simply don't buy their products!!! Naomi is great, but she is simply wrong on this subject. Nobody is forbidding black people living in the west or coming to west to start their brands and hiring the models of whatever race they see fit.
Josipa Jakovljević Hello confused! Yes, the brands you mentioned are Italian but they are sold WORLDWIDE!! The models chosen for the shows have a larger impact internationally. If the products were only brought and sold in Italy by Italy people, then fair enough but they are not. They are hugely popular with WOC. She didn’t accuse anyone of racism but was merely pointing out that it would be nice to see more black models and indeed WOC.
Culture cannot be stolen. Cultural appropriation is an invention of people who live off dividing people! I don't agree with anything you just wrote. There is so much wrong with fashion industry from exploiting children (young girls), environment destruction, exploiting workers, promoting eating disorder, promoting materialism... Counting those girls melanin is not going to solve anything!
@@jessicarose3494 As I said, nobody is forced to buy anything from those people, if WOC are buying from them, it means they DO NOT CARE about this topic!
@@jessicarose3494First of all - I love black women, what's there not to love about them? Second of all - it is very emotionally immature to attack people ad hominem just because they don't agree with you. I think it is completely useless to discuss with you, because your rhetoric is very agresive and demining to me. People like you make me very sad. I can practically feel your hate :( :( :( I feel so so sorry for you. I wish you all the best and hope you get well soon.
One thing about famous black model like Naomi or Tyra is that they are not really black. With coloured eyes, they are mix. However, they are not considered half white by their society.
i really enjoy her the comments and answer sh has given the interviewer everyone has the opinion that she is angry black , its has nothing to do with colour she is just voicing out what she feels she be done in the fashion industry period
