Library as Home envisions a library that feels like a large house for all, with a rich variety of environments that Shanghai’s citizens could appropriate as their own. As such, our design is inspired by the intimate connections between people, media and nature in libraries of the ancient world. At Tian Yi Ge - the oldest library in China - one enters the reading room from the garden. The books are stored a level above, protected from the elements with wood screens. We have been inspired by this simple organization and integration between libraries and nature, and believe that these should still resonate in contemporary libraries today.
