Nardwuar the Human Serviette is a music industry superstar, known for his memorable interviews and eccentric demeanour. But Nardwuar's almost 40 year career is not without hundreds of bumps, hurdles and doubters. This video explores some of the moments that shaped him, from the 1991 incident with Sonic Youth to the 2003 attack from Dave Rowntree. Yet Nardwuar keeps working, researching, and always smiling. You know his name, his face, but do you know his story?

Interesting fact: The drummer in Blur who treated Nardwuar badly has opened up a few times about this incident. He said it is one of the biggest regrets in his entire life. He also was on a lot of drugs at the time. He is sober now and he mentions that any time he has struggled with his sobriety he will open the Nardwuar interview he has saved on his phone and watch it. People with ASD are very often misunderstood and I think that is what is going on here. Out of context, a lot of people have trouble reading Nardwar as the sweet person he is and may instead think that he is mocking them or trying to get one over on them. Bully types have often been bullied themselves and then go on to bully others. I think that a lot of the people who take him wrong are people who see him as some kind of aggressor who is making fun of them so they get really defensive and mean. In a lot of his early interviews, I'm sure people had zero context for who he was and that he was a good guy. I'm just glad he didn't let those experiences change him because he is a rare gem.

I will tell you a story about what a great guy Nardwuar is: I’m a full-time musician in Canada and to make a living I have to play with multiple bands. One of the band’s I had the good fortune to play for was the hard rock band Helix. Now, I did this from 1997-2004. There was a music message board I used to frequent (I won’t say which cause A: it blows now and B: I want to respect Nardwuar’s privacy.) Anyway, I took a lot of heat on this board, as I was in the band after it’s 80’s glory days. That, and the fact that the nature of this board was sarcasm, negativity and mocking. Now, I admit it could be fun, posting on there. But some times, people would dog pile on others. And get really, really mean. Well, on one occasion this happened to me (posting drunk and high didn’t help me). And I got taken apart...at times I’m sure I deserved it. But, one time, someone found out personal information about me, posted and shared it-and some of the posters became really hurtful. Now, in perspective, it wasn’t a huge deal-I didn’t lose any sleep over it. But it was cruel. Well, Nardwuar private messaged me and proved to me it was him...and he was a sweetheart. He really took the time to tell me not to believe what they were saying and that I should be proud of my Helix past etc. He also defended me in the board discussions. Point is, he didn’t have to do this. He was hiding under the cover of anonymity, and a username, and just could have let it slide. But he didn’t. I’ve never told this story as I’ve respected his privacy but at this point it’s almost 20 years gone past-and frankly, that BOARD is now past it’s sell by date. But quite frankly, he deserves a good word for this! Thanks again, Nardwuar...and keep on rockin’ in the free world! Glen ‘Archie’ Gamble

People will attack what they don’t understand. Nardwuar is the perfect example of this. He’s so…different, and I love it.

I'm actually tearing up from what some of the artists did to Nardwuar. This very kind hearted and sweet man does not deserve to be treated like that man... I honestly didn't expect to tear up from seeing that.

same here man i actually teared up after the sonic youth clip, and the one where they were snatching his hat, that hat means a lot to him because his mom who died gave it to him

I actually met the man when I was volunteering at a student journalism conference in Vancouver and he genuinely is the exact same way in person as he was in videos. He was incredibly generous with his time, eager to share with us his experiences and so full of life. Also I managed to get a picture with him!

@@goldfishgallant1432 yeah tell that to natgeo docs maker, they've been doing that for 100 years.

@@artso1990 look I could be wrong but I would assume NatGeo would break up their productions with scenes that have a lot less going on visually, which would be equivalent to cutting away to Dodfords face. NatGeo isn't one person, they don't have a familiar face they can come back to, here on RU-vid each channel is personal and curated and by showing his face, he allows more connection with the audience

his Lydia Lunch interview is absolutely hilarious, the more she tries being condescending to him, the harder he trolls her. Then he follows her at the end trying to get her to do the "DOOT DOOT" She may have been shitty to him but Nard was gold in it, one of his funniest interviews with a hater

Nardwuar talking to Gorbechov really put it in perspective for me how long he's been doing this. He's an oddball, but he's extremely thorough with his research going into interviews.
