I mean there's at least SOME truth to the warlock's argument, but I say give them a chance FIRST, only killing them if they DO in fact prove themselves to be so indoctrinated that they can't think to do anything BUT try to harm you.

There's a line between processing something logically and being insensitive, which I feel the warlock did alright. Obviously they could have tried to converse more quietly from a greater distance, but it didn't sound like their intent was to discuss possible murder to their potential victim's face. It's nice and all to see a story where it turned out fine, but I've seen enough campaign stories to be aware that it's one of several possible outcomes. Winning a gamble always feels good. And unless you know your DM/GM well enough to predict how they'll use a plot hook, it *is* a gamble. It is cold to view it that way, even with fictional characters, but ignoring logic is just as much an error as focusing only on logic

I like to think that while they were considering the moral ramifications of their actions in regards to cold-bloodedly murdering someone (especially when you consider that some DMs could punish the decision either way), that *My* coldblooded Lizardfolk would have heard the word evil, known that the soft skins use it to describe creatures that are threats, and gone into the carriage to invite the Princess' throat to a picnic. As a short time dm, long time player, and avid story reader, i love having characters like these in campaigns. For instance, in the campaign i plan to run with my fiance, there’s a Lich Fighter king of a forgotten empire. He’s the bbeg of the campaign, but isn’t inherently evil. He just wanted to live long enough to protect his kingdom, and try to rebuild it. There’s a hidden option that if she and her friend try to reason with him, he’ll listen and give up without a fight. It’s all on them how that goes xD

I believe they made the right choice but the title is somewhat misleading. Calling her an evil princess implies she herself is evil which from the story doesn't seem to be the case. Just because you are raised by someone evil and forced to do evil things doesn't make you evil. Now if she was evil, as in wanted to do those horrendous acts, I'd say kill her. But that also depends on the character I'd be playing if I came across that situation.
@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 3 года назад
The empire might not actually be evil either, as that is a matter of perspective. Only if one performs certain acts and actions in D&D is one actually evil. It is and was quite common for two sides to come into conflict in D&D with the possibility of both sides being good, even lawful good, because of some perceived differences, territorial claims, or beliefs and for each side to call the other "evil" while neither side actually is.

The concept of evil and good is subjective from person to person that depends on their point of view
@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 3 года назад
True, but alignment is not. It is set on specific point of view based on what is heroic and typical white hat. That is why in D&D evil characters do not go around thinking they are evil or that they are the bad guys, they believe they are right from their point of view, but the alignment system indicates otherwise.
@benjaminjane93
@benjaminjane93 3 года назад
Not in terms of manichaeism. And D&D as presented assumes that your world is set in a world with a manichean cosmology.
@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 3 года назад
@@benjaminjane93 The actual cosmology of D&D, at least from the lore perspective, is actually quite a bit different than that of manichaean cosmology, but part of it was organized based on alignment (the outer planes) while most of it was not (the prime material plane, elemental planes, astral plane, and ethereal plane which included many demiplanes like Ravenloft). The current state is just a mess and is not really based on anything.
@benjaminjane93
@benjaminjane93 3 года назад
@@craigtucker1290 True, true. But alignment is not a wishy washy concept in these worlds, but divinely ordained. They are tangible forces of the cosmos as elemental as fire or water. It was kind of that angle I wanted to emphasize.
@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 3 года назад
@@benjaminjane93 Well, not divinely ordained per se, but a mechanic based on the game designers view on how every other creature was to be judged, including deities, using a specific ideal based on what was consider heroic. That is why using poison, killing prisoners, or taking slaves was considered to be evil because it wasn't viewed as being heroic by the game designers when they added good and evil to law and chaos. You are very much right in that it is not a wishy washy concept or a subjective analysis based on perspective, rather it is a very rigid measurement based on very specific ideals. Something that was stressed back in the older versions was that it was quite common for one to be evil and never realize that they were evil. The vast majority would actually believe themselves to be good, but the net sum of their actions tended to cause more harm and suffering than good, hence evil. Most also do not understand that once you have declared your alignment for your character, it is no longer under the player's direct control and subject to change based on your character's actions, not how you view your character.

Oh-ho-ро... One time our party was split into two because of the question of an Evil princess... but not powerless, as it shown here, very much overpowered. And my lawful evil Wizard, who earlier made a vow to her to help her reclaim the throne that is hers by the right of age and might (and also having a crush on her). And on the other end, were the rest of the party, including the younger neutral good princess. The tensions were escalating. And when the party decided to attack the evil one and her forces, my wizard could not bear it any longer. He left the party with a couple of dark and nercotic-damaging spells cast and joined the forces with the BBEG, to uphold his promise (and protect the one he loved). The final fight was brutal, but party cleric managed to midigate most of the damage. The evil was destroyed and my heartbroken wizard was exiled from the kingdom... Only to return decades later, having changed his aligment to lawful neutral, to save the collapsed country. It hardly deserves a video, but as a story... it was worth it.

An adventure from the mid 90s left us with the choice of what to do with a Drow baby. W. o. t. C. has since gotten woke with the lore now, but at the time the Drow were described in the Monster Manual as evil at birth; Because of their parents worship of Lolth. The only other humanoid species that is described that way to the knowledge of mine, is an Illithid baby. So what do you do with a demon child when you know it as a demon child? Sure it is all nice & good to _say_ you would adopt it or some such thing, but what would you personally do when it is your own life on the line? The example in the video reminded me of the Drow baby... However the choice to kill the Princess would be far less justified to the distortion of mine. The party is described as being ignorant of local royal history or politics. Certain members are making _assumptions_ about her character based on hearsay. That seems they are likely wrong; Even before the tears & saving the party.

I'd have her stick with the party more to learn more things. Then have her sneak off to the empire to become a major political player to take control of the empire completely instead of being just a puppet. She'd still be evil, but it'd be a lawful evil. To the party, she'd appear to be trying to make things better by giving them optional quests and information on her political rivals. If the players figured out she was also evil, she'd give them a chance to work with her willingly anyway. I doubt I'd have her actually try to kill the party unless they tried to actively stop her. She would, after all, be grateful for them helping her gain power.

Cool version of the Baby Hitler debate.

Except there's no reason to really believe she'd be evil.

@@R3GARnator warlock explained how it would be a logical outcome. More reasons than you'd have with baby hitler, even.

I'd have it be an option for the future. Yeah, she'd still be evil, but it's not like it'd be chaotic evil. The party is helping her get stronger at the moment. I'd most likely just have a section when she tries to sneak back off to the empire at a point and if she makes it, instead of being a pawn like she would have been, she'd be a major player in the politics of the empire. I'd most likely even have her be sneaky and make the party think she plans on turning the empire around from the inside. Giving the party quests to help get rid of political opponents and etc. Very nice dm from this story either way. He could still have her switch it up later.

I agree with the Druid’s logic. The Warlock was an idiot

Not sure it matters... BUT if you enjoy researching names and their meanings, "Sarah" is of a Hebrew origin (most agree) and means or translates most literally to "Princess" or "Noble woman"... Just thought it dubiously entertaining as a GM's "arbitrary" choice of name for this particular NPC... ;o)
