Here is a look at how I make this yellow and green cold process soap. This layered soap also has pencil/mica lines. In this video, I use a tall slab mold that my husband and I made using an E-book by Benjamin and Amanda Aaron. (Link below) This allows me to make 40 Tall & Skinny bars.
Stick around until the end of the video for the “What I Learned” section! Scroll down for recipe and supplies.

Yes, larger batches go through gel phase more readily simply because there is a larger mass of soap creating and retaining heat as saponification progresses! I'm a small-batch hobbyist but I notice the larger my batch (even just a 1000g batch) heats up much more easily than my 400g tester batches. Also, I find it helpful to use a little Crisco or palm oil to stick my silicone liners to the sides of my molds if they start being naughty. I adore your videos and your teaching, your voice is calming, and your soaps are SO beautiful!! They're so inspiring to look at, and your process is so clean and soothing. When I soap, it looks like a bomb went off. Can't wait to continue seeing more and more amazing creations :)

@hamsteripyora
@hamsteripyora 5 лет назад
@@TreeMarieSoapworks No problem at all!! Oh girl, you should have seen the mess I made of the soap I did this morning. I almost knocked half the batter on the floor, and did not wait even remotely long enough between layers. Mica lines are not for the impatient - and I am VERY impatient. It's gonna look like a hot mess XD I definitely feel the struggle!! As long as it makes it into the mold MOSTLY I'd say it's a success lol

BRILLIANT idea to keep smaller amounts of each oil in a smaller container for topping up just at the end when approaching nearly enough of your target of oil weight! Thanks! Never thought if it, despite HATING fighting with gallon jugs FOREVER! And having tried a bunch of different things. Including one fluid ounce pump dispensers, but they just weren't quite the thing. 10Q again. BRILLIANT idea! Forest and trees, again.

If you bend the spoon the other way, then it will be less likely to introduce bubbles, because the soap won't hit the spoon and go up its sides, but rather flow over it, breaking the fall more smoothly.

I'm curious, I see other soap maker's end up with bars that seem to have a lot of white specs in them. Are those air bubbles, unmixed ingredients, etc.? Yours seem to have far fewer white specs/spots/bubbles, which makes your colors look more consistent and vibrant. How do you do it? (is it thoroughly mixing your colorants with oil first?)

For splitting your batch and working with layers, am I understanding this correctly that you would take the mold’s capacity and divide it by however many times you want to split the batch into (ie: 16oz capacity divided by 4 would equal 4oz mini batches of soap) that you then run through soapcalc with your oil percentages to find out the amount of water and lye for those mini batches and then proceed with your design? Is there an easier and more accurate way to calculate what you would need to do if you want to work with one layer at a time, especially if you have a fickle fragrance oil? If you have a video on this I’d love the link. Thanks!

Hi teri am gonna try to make your soap bcs I admire it but am wondering at what degree do you mix your oils and lye solution ? And what you do if they cooled more than they supposed to while you are making the 1st layer ? Thank you in advance
@TreeMarieSoapworks
@TreeMarieSoapworks 4 года назад
I like my temps to be between 85-95 degrees F. For a layer soap, I would try for 95 to start with. I use clay and a fragrance oil that has a slight acceleration to help the layers set up more quickly. That way there is usually only about 15 minutes between pours. I don't worry about the temps. I just cover my oils and lye in between use.

Sometimes when people cut soap they get little white bubbles almost on each slice. How do you keep your soaps from getting that bubbly surface and keep them looking so clean? Hope what I'm asking makes sense
@tellervo.
@tellervo. 5 лет назад
tigerlilley Not teri, but I get bubbles if I forget to ”burp” or tap my stick blender inside the soap mixture before I start to blend :-)
@TreeMarieSoapworks
@TreeMarieSoapworks 5 лет назад
Yes, it makes sense. Most of the time it's from air bubbles because of the stick blender not being burped like @tellervo said. Sometimes it is due to fragrance. Sometimes it is just blamed on the wire cutter. I find that waiting 48 hours before cutting works well. If you have those problems when cutting with a wire, a knife usually works nicely to "smear" those spots and they don't appear.

Hello, may i ask why did you add kaolin clay? Is there any specific function adding it in the soap making process? Thx b4..

Kaolin clay firms up the layer quickly. Also it helps with the lather.

Do you had the kaolin to help fix the fo? If not, what is it’s purpose ?

I usually use it in layer soaps to help it set a bit faster. I probably didn't need it for this one since the Wasabi FO accelerates. It helps with lather too. I find that it helps whites become whiter. It is not great with swirls because it absorbs moisture and causes acceleration.

Why do you avoid heating your cocoa butter too much?
@TreeMarieSoapworks
@TreeMarieSoapworks 5 лет назад
When working with cocoa butter and shea butter I try to keep the temps between 85 and 95 degrees. I learned about chocolate and that you get "fat bloom," a white film that develops when you don't temper chocolate right. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I think that film looks a lot like soda ash. The "magical temperature" for tempering chocolate is 93 degrees Fahrenheit. I try not to get my temps. too much above that. On the other side of things, I started soaping at room temperature and was getting stearic spots, so I don't soap at room temperature anymore. The ideal temperature for me is 85-95 degrees. Hope that makes sense. 😊

@@TreeMarieSoapworks Thanks for the info! Do you heat cocoa butter in the microwave? That's what I do and I find it takes longer to melt than the coconut oil. I think I may melt them separately now so I can monitor them better. Thanks again.

Why do you place the ruler at an angle?
@TreeMarieSoapworks
@TreeMarieSoapworks 5 лет назад
If I need to divide my loaf by 10 and the loaf is slightly smaller than 10 inches, I slant my ruler and put the 0 on the edge and the 10 on the other edge and mark on the inch lines. I get 10 equal bars. 💚😊
