This 4K visualization shows the Moon's phase and libration at hourly intervals throughout 2016, as viewed from the northern hemisphere. Each frame represents one hour.
In addition, this visualization shows the Moon's orbit position, sub-Earth and subsolar points, distance from the Earth at true scale, and labels of craters near the terminator.
To learn more about this visualization, or to see what the Moon will look like at any hour in 2016, visit our "Dial A-Moon" website: svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/...

+70d3x Oh yeah! In case some of you wonder, the music is composed by Mark Petrie for Killer Tracks' album KT310 'Shock and Awe', and it is track number 5 - 'Uncharted Realms'. You can listen to it on soundcloud: soundcloud.com/mark-22/uncharted-realms

Epic libration bro. :D Very cool visualization. Nice touch adding the crater names along the terminator.

That is fucking beautiful. The moon phases sped up so we can see the light moving across the moon on a perceptible-by-humans time frame.

I always find it incredible how long this cycle has repeated itself. How it has occurred for billions of years with very little change (except an increase in the distance of the Moon and the slowing of Earth's spin, as well as other factors such as changes in axial tilt). A truly beautiful thing :)
@cortster12
@cortster12 8 лет назад
+Ollie Little change? Well, depends on how you define little.
@ollie8419
@ollie8419 8 лет назад
Well the Moon has slowed the Earth's rotation by about 4 hours every billion years so, maybe quite a bit... :P

An excellent animation... I always wondered about the curvature of the shadow and this animation shows it very nicely. Due to the curvature of the moon, the earth's shadow moves from convex to concave as it passes through the centre of the moon's visible side.... duh :)

I have a question. How is it that the moon continues its full moon lunar the same way in the summer solstice as it does in the winter solstice (East to West) when on the small scale (top left hand corner) the moon in the summer solstice is lite on the right side at 12 o'clock and on the left side at 12 o'clock in the winter solstice. Shouldn't the full scale moon go (West to East) when the earth is on the opposite side of the sun?

yo. i live southern how come Moon is in à way toward the east and upside down toward the west ? it seems the model doesnt fit
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
Because the Earth is round, your perspective looking at the moon is very different from ours in the Northern hemisphere. The fact that you see the moon "upside down" compared to us is good proof that the Earth is not flat.

Please look carefully at 0:14 - 0:15 and then 0:18 - 0:19! The moon is located in the same direction where the sun light comes from. Can you tell me, please, HOW it's possible to see this phases of the moon (waning / waxing crescent) during the night, from the dark side of the earth, BUT NOT the SUN??? Thank you!
@max5250
@max5250 6 лет назад
Because the Moon is so far away, and Earth doesn't obstruct sun rays on the Moon during the night on the Earth, except in special cases when we can observe Lunar eclipse. There are not day and nights in the Space (at least our part) since the Sun is always shining, night is only local event created on the side of the planet or moons that are oriented away from the Sun.

Bottom left figure shows that the moon is rotating clockwise when viewed from the top. But the top left animation shows it is rotating anti-clockwise. Why did Nasa screw this up?
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 7 лет назад
The bottom left figure shows precession, not rotation - the moon's wobble. I suppose if you think about it real hard, with the relative earth and sun views you could extrapolate rotation, but it's not a top-down view.

This seems to show the Earth as the Center of our Universe as the Sun and Moon go around us , not to mention the moon does'nt even Rotate it Rocks and Rolls ... ?

I've always wondered how the moon orbit could be Geocentric. Try moving a ball like we see the moon and make it have a Geocentric orbit with something.

So, moon starts to be visible to the eye at 8h?
@believervsbeliefs6599
@believervsbeliefs6599 8 лет назад
The model in the upper left indicates that the Moon is visible to the dark side of the Earth even when it is in the "light side" of the Earth (except New Moon). How is that possible? Also, a 1st quarter Moon, where I am, comes up in the east in early evening during the winter, is over-head in the middle of the evening, and setting in the west later in the night. This model has it straight over-head at dusk.

+Believer VS Beliefs Wow, I don't know how you can track that spinning globe enough to see where your location is. It makes me dizzy to try.
@believervsbeliefs6599
@believervsbeliefs6599 8 лет назад
+NASA Goddard It's not hard on 1080p. Can you explain why the center picture is showing the Moon as visible to the dark side of the Earth when it is on the opposite side? For example, @0:42 it shoes a waxing crescent directly over the U.S. in daylight. Can the people in Perth, Western Australia see that? I only ask because the center illustration is showing only images in a night sky.
@Macwill1985

Wow! "I made this model, but I don't even know how it works or what it means"- NASA Give me a BREAK! How about a professional answer? Although I'm sure it's just some inept intern running this channel.
@tardigrades3184

upper left model is not to distance scale the middle model behind the moon is to scale
@NoName-gq6zo

Weird , this shows the Sun going around the Earth , and the Moon weebles and wobbles ?
@NASAGoddard
@NASAGoddard 8 лет назад
It shows the moon orbiting the Earth, and the sun relative to the moon (not going around it any more than the sun goes around Earth, but a relative view can give that impression). And yes, the moon appears to wobble a bit from Earth.
@NoName-gq6zo
@NoName-gq6zo 8 лет назад
Well the Nasa model does show the Earth as being in the center and the moon going around the Earth plane but it also shows the Sun also going around both bodies , it also shows the Moon as if it were suspended on a twisted chain.It appears to not even rotate completely , its more like a 'Rock and Roll'...weird?
@lunarcraftsolargaming7487

What you re saying "the moon webbles and wobbles" is the libration
@NoName-gq6zo
@NoName-gq6zo 8 лет назад
Look at the face of the moon , it does not rotate fully or completely , it weebles and wobbles or it Rock's and Rolls
