Hell, and i used to do loops, rolls and kick the rudder from 80 mph to do Wing Overs and dive straight to the ground on this thing in the 1970's..

I had a Yankee 1969 until a few years ago with the 125 hp J2A conversion and she was one fun, responsive and twitchy girl to fly!

This may not be true....but I've heard that the Yankee could go into an unrecoverable spin because the fuel tanks were not properly baffled. If the plane started to spin the fuel would slosh towards the wingtips, sometimes increasing the centrifugal force beyond what the rudder could correct.

A friend who instructed on these in the early 70s said they spun them all the time and were recoverable as long as the tanks were full for the same reason you mentioned.

Fill it with fuel.

In the Yankee this was true with the symmetrical airfoil of the wing, but all 2-seaters had baffles in the tanks.

I would like to see this test re accomplished

Break out pen and paper and write away! When they changed the airfoil to make the plane 'more' stable, Dicey Miller told them they ruined a perfectly good airplane.

Is this how they figure out you shouldn’t spin the AA1?
@GrummanPilots
@GrummanPilots 4 года назад
They knew from the fleet and flight training schools, this just verified the mode it was happening in.

I got a little time in this bird. They are a bit underpowered and unforgiving. Diversions from the envelope can be a little abrupt. Cruises real quick on that little powerplant, though. Jim Bede loved blind rivets and this bird is full of them. No bueno.

I agree they are fun and because of that you have to stay in control of the plane.

@@GrummanPilots Incredible in ground effect. They'll eat up a lot of runway unless you drive em on. That's what I remember the most about that bird.

@@mustangsandwich I find them very easy to fly, just have to stick to the book numbers for flight, too much speed and you will eat up a lot of runway.
