Back with the second half of Krish’s interview. Krish is a Grumman Tiger Pilot & Owner and in this video he takes us through the actual cost of owning a 1979 Grumman Tiger.
The cost of ownership includes the original purchase price of the airplane, then you have you fixed cost like hangar, insurance etc. Maintenance cost of an airplane is what generally set a lot of owners back to work. Krish discussed having to change some avionics, propeller, engine cowling, and after 300 hours of flying him and his partners also had to overhaul the 180hp engine, which cost a whopping $28,000.
Now Krish does have 3 other partners who own the airplane with him. This helps tremendously because all of the cost of ownership, flight and maintenance are all shared equally among the 4 partners. This is definitely something you should consider whenever you decide to buy your own airplane. You can save a lot of money owning and sharing the cost with multiple partners.

Nice video ! As half owner of a 1978 Grumman Tiger, I can verify that his cost figures are pretty accurate. My partner and I pay $350 a month fixed cost each and $25 an hour plus fuel operating cost. Our plane has the Sensi prop and Lopresti cowl too. We also have the PowerFlo exhaust upgrade. Just completed a bare metal restoration including new paint, interior, and plexiglass. She looks like a brand new airplane ! Happy flying folks ! 😃

Pix please - would love to see all the hard work. I need to paint my Cheetah (original 1979 paint - hangared her whole life I believe).

@Harvey Weinstein - The costs would be comparable to a PA-28 Archer or a C-172 with the O-360 Lycoming. The Tiger is around 10-15 knots faster on the same fuel burn though.

I bought my plane from a group of 3 guys. They were always arguing between themselves; what upgrades were needed, who got the plane on particularly nice flying days, when to change the oil, every decision was a big issue for them. They even argued about whether or not to sell me the plane. Some people (me included) don't share well and those people should just eat the costs and be sole owners.

I own a 1976 Cessna 150M outright. For comparison, payments were $230/month when I still owed on it. Hangar rent is $150/month, insurance is $480 annually, and Annual Inspection is $1,100. My current total annual costs are $3,400, plus fuel, and any squawks found at annual.

This partnership has been very pro-active on upgrades / repairs - All of these expenses are essentially 'worst-case scenario' especially the engine swap. What I am trying to say here is this partnership should be commended for building up / restoring this old Tiger to a safe, IFR, fast beast. If you are interested in owning a Grumman, you *can* buy one with a low-time engine and fly it for 500 or 1000 hours then sell it and not incur so much expense as what you're hearing/seeing here. This is possible. Excellent video Mojo...

$48K total purchase price, on a finance deal. This includes pre-buy inspections etc, some done prior to it being offered for sale, some done at the time of purchase. Engine was old, only did another 300 hours before overhaul. Came with Garmin 430 gps, lo presti engine cowling, improved propeller. Fixed costs... Hangaring $400 /month Financing $400/month Insurance - $1500/month (for 4 people partnering Annual work - $3000 last year ... $250/month (owner assisted annual would be cheaper) Upgrades.... shared among share-holders I presume overhaul... $23K USD ... $2k installation. ,,, $28K total USD, incl annual GPS - had garmin 430, got 430W ... $5k total cost of swap. Allows IFR approaches etc. Big improvement in capability. ADSB in and out... Garmin 435... works well with 430W Variable costs... what every member pays per hour when flying aircraft $25 /hour basic maint... goes towards maintenance etc also .

Hey man.. nice video. One tip thought: As the person is talking about various part of the airplane. Try to show a close up of it. Example: when he was talking about the gps.. try showing the panel as he is talking about it .This way the video doesn’t get boring.

That was interesting to watch. Much better than your usual promo video for big companies Gives a good idea how expensive aircraft ownership is. Even on an old, small plane. I pay about $170 cad per hour, which I hate, but at least I don't have to worry about for a 28k overhaul, or worse!
@davidcastelli4655
@davidcastelli4655 5 лет назад
but after he went through the laundry list of overhauls and upgrades, over the next few years the plane will be significantly cheaper to operate than renting...($25 in the kitty and fuel cost only) and after 5 to 10 years you can probably recover all or a good portion of your investment on sale. Meanwhile 10 years of renting is easily 100k down the drain.
@simonwatts9150
@simonwatts9150 5 лет назад
@@davidcastelli4655 i dont disagree. Depends how long you actually keep it. And it seems better to do shared so you don't have to pay the full cost your self.
@davidcastelli4655
@davidcastelli4655 5 лет назад
simon watts . yes so you have 2 critical decisions, first is finding a plane that is in excellent low hour condition and then finding one or 2 partners maximum.. but that would depend on hours you intend to fly. also if you fly 50% of the hours for the year then it seems reasonable that you’d pay 50% of the cost.

On top of that, on top of that, on top of that, HA. I thought I was getting scammed paying 184$ Hr for a Cessna 182s club airplane, guess I won’t be complaining about that anymore. Really like the idea of being able to get another plane when your favorite one is down for maintenance and getting reimbursed immediately from the club when you get a flat tire or other maint on a trip. Just being able to wash your hands from the plane altogether when your done is a huge plus for being in a club.
@jonthepilot6924

Try $240 where I am for a 182. Ugh.
@AV8OR51
@AV8OR51 5 лет назад
$184 doesn’t sound bad at all..it’s more like that for a 172 in the Atlanta area
@tropicthndr
@tropicthndr 5 лет назад
Wouldn’t join a club that charges 240$ that’s a scam. Our Sr22 in SF Bay Area go for 350hr and that’s a scam too. Operating costs for a sr22 "all in" with insurance, gas, maint and hanger is 200$ HR, the rest is mechanic fees.
@jonthepilot6924
@jonthepilot6924 5 лет назад
@@tropicthndr The SR22s are at least $350 for us and that's way too much for me to bother. A G1000 172S is about $150 but those are only slated for training and can't be rented for more than a 3 hour block. We used to have an old Arrow for about $200 and I flew that quite a bit.

The problem with a partnership is always one person will eventually not want to fly anymore and pay upkeep. Argue about flying time. And other bs.. Then your stuck. Plus I'm an a and p and everyone wants free maintenance.. partnerships suck

Why does engine overhaul cost $25K when a brand new 120 HP 6cyl 4 stroke engine can be bought for $15-20K.
