Vegan Nashville Hot Chicken is a thing…when you make it with tofu! Inspired by my popular Best Vegan Fried Chicken recipe, this vegan Nashville Hot Tofu uses the double-freeze technique but simplifies (and healthifies?) the process making this recipe easy and quick with little effort. Crispy on the outside but tender and moist on the inside, this sweet and spicy dish is tofu for everyone - even people who don’t really care for tofu!
Note that since this recipe uses double-frozen tofu, you will need to prep the tofu a few days ahead of time. Please read the recipe before beginning.

Thanks for this! I used to live in Nashville, and even worked a few blocks away from one of the original hot chicken joints (Bolton’s) but they never had anything I could eat so I felt like I was missing out. Cannot wait to try this!

Making this one right now. Was a little scared of the tablespoon of cayenne pepper but it is perfectly ok because of the brine cooling it down, Yumdelicious if you have not made this stop everything and do so right this moment, you will be glad you did. My high school English teacher is very upset with the run on but hey, so. lol

I only invented it a few years ago so you can't be blamed! Only the double freezing of medium firm tofu to make it flaky like chicken though. People have been using frozen tofu for centuries (even before modern refridgeration!)

Amazing!! I’m from Nashville and since going vegan I’ve been looking for a recipe and this is it! I marinate the chicken before, coat in a little corn starch and bake like you said, then add a little more marinade after. And oh my god wow. And the double freeze is a game changer. Thank you!

Can this sauce be used on "fried chicken" tofu or would it get soggy. Would one make the fried-chicken-tofu, coat, and then re-bake? Also, looking forward to an organic flaky tofu brand too! 🙏🏽💓

Thank you so much for your tutorials. The tofu is not easy to come by here, but I finally managed to get some packets. Now they are in the freezer awaiting their transformation. I wondered if you have ever tried to store the tofu pieces by vacuumizing them?

Okay I have to admit I am leaving And impatient so what I've been doing what I be your tofu chicken is a freezer it once then break it up and then I put it and my oven and basically dehydrated and then mix it in with ever seasoning mixture I'm going to mix it in

So, double freeze/thaw the tofu, tear it into pieces, and then freeze and store again? Do I have that right? How is it on the third thaw?

Yeah only if say you're doing a few packs and not using them right away. The third freeze doesnt make a difference to the final product. Just work quickly and be food safe

Sorry, unless you have freezing temperatures outside you can use for freezing, you won't be able to create this texture. However, you can use extra firm tofu with this recipe (skip the freezing step) and make delicious seasoned tofu anyway.

I can only find medium firm in actual Asian stores. We have HMart and Ocean Pacific (I think that’s the name) here. That’s where I find soft as well. Some stores have shelf stable tofu and I see all the varieties there, but for some reason, that grossed me out 😆

I'm in Canada. It's pretty easy to find - all the grocery stores near me carry it. You can try looking in stores where east asian people tend to shop. They will tend to carry medium firm tofu since it's more used in east asian cuisine.

sorry I haven't found one yet When you're picking tofu, go by feel rather than label. It should have the similar firmness to the meaty part of your palm just under the thumb.

It's literally labelled as medium firm or just medium. One of the brands I buy, it's labelled traditional. The firmer ones you mentioned do not work well for this recipe.

Firm tofu goes kinda grainy/spongy rather than flaky. But that's totally OK in terms of flavour! Only freeze once though.

Why do I have to have to keep spending money and time on tofu just to get it to mimic chicken when you have the answer is it a legal thing why you can't show the brand I checked the blog for details and still can't find the answer I been trying this method for a year I commented on the other video same issue & some brands have numbers to indicate how firm I tried I'm wasting money there's some channels show everything in detail some just hide some stuff you have to go on a mission to get it ... It's clear I'm frustrated help me understand why you just can't show the package that you use and then I won't keep commenting on this tofu video.. don't get me wrong I appreciate what you're doing it takes a lot of courage and energy to put these together for us but it's complicated and it shouldn't have to be I know a female that shows everything she do her measurements are always on point I am a die-hard fan of her her recipes never fail me if I can see the brands and it's still don't come out right then I can blame myself

I've shown it on multiple videos tho...and there's a whole list on the blog post linked of both brands that work and don't work. Actually the list is even in multiple places! The list keeps changing based on what's being reported by testers which is why I keep it there and not just show in videos. Plus a video is forever and cannot be edited afterward posting on RU-vid . So if the brands change formulas, I have no way editing that into the video

@@beckyirvin4935 if you're not racist then why have a problem with the phrase "don't be racist"? It comes with no accusations. Why would you feel personally offended? It's my responsibility as an Asian woman with a platform to raise awareness and fight back against the recent rise of outward and violent rascism in our current time.

Mary's Test Kitchen We are all part of the same human family. Our emphasis should be one that promotes that idea. Not race gender or socioeconomic status. Im glad you chose to use your platform to provide public awareness how about: “Be Kind”, “Together We Can Find Peace” “ Have Compassion”. You can keep me from commenting, but it only makes my theory ring true. When we separate people into factions is sets up walls, divisions. I just want peace🌸 something to think about miss Mary
