This is a rare clip showing perhaps the most famous prima ballerina of the modern era, Natalia Makaova, and one of her favorite partners, Ivan Nagy, dancing the White Swan Pas de Deux from "Swan Lake."
They are accompanied on-stage by violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Lynn Harrell.
This was performed on May 13, 1984 as part of a 100th anniversary celebration at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Ms. Makarova was forty-four at the time of this performance. Ivan Nagy had retired six years earlier, in 1978, at the age of thirty-five, but was coaxed by Makarova to return for this one performance.

Mine too. Something about her that just appeals me more than most ballerinas out there. Her techniques and musicality may not be some people's cup of tea (and I can see that) but from what I have seen, her performances somehow always move me.

I so agree with you - Makarova is the 'benchmark'for me and I believe she always will be. Although I must say Natalia Osipova is emerging and is showing signs of being a wonderful Swan queen in the latter part of the 21st Century and the beginning of the 22nd Century. She is sensitive in Act 2 and formidable as Odile and where appropriate, she dances with joy in her heart :) .The 1982 production of Swan Lake by the Royal Ballet and filmed at Covent Garden with Natalia Makarova and Odette/Odile and Sir Anthony Dowell as Siegfried is a very hard production to be better than. The production is the 'benchmark'' for me. IMO only :)

These two were so wonderful together. I feel privileged to have seen them. Natalia’s breath and movement were one. The flow was incomperable. Her presence was remarkable. She felt the music down to her blood. So light, not a burden on her partners. Ivan was wonderful, too. His dancing was lovely and correct, his acting terrific, and his partnering, sublime! And Itzhak is no slouch on that violin, either! ❤

She honestly remains the best ever to do ballet. She seems almost made for the art and the sport. Anyone who's had the honor and privilege of seeing her perform believes so. That petite little body and frame, and yet those long, willowy limbs just seem to go on forever and ever.... And yet, she was not given the honor of "Prima Ballerina Absolutta" This is not just a silly oversight. This is not just moronic, it is criminal! Natasha Forever. ... And Ever, Dane Youssef

How beautiful to watch Makarova and the late, great, Naggy, dance this role together again. He was one of the most perfect partners, for a ballerina to have. My father David Blair, staged, directed, choreography, for ABT, IN 1967, Swan Lake in four acts. How well I remember most of my childhood spent at the Met, watching it grow, to a first rate ballet company, with the formidable, Lucia Chase, at it's helm! x

He was as a prince. The kind of Prince Charming that belonged in a fairy tale. In a little girl's most wishful of fantasies. I myself wish he would've stuck around... just a little. I had to chuckle when I read a comment left by John Meyer about the "preserving Tchaikovsky's musicality as they maintained the "measured" pace required by the dancers...." It's probably significant to remember one very important thing. When Tchaikovsky composed his score, it was the intent that it be "danced". It isn't just a concert piece to be performed in a recital hall - it's a work that is the a part of a complete theatrical work - a sharing of artistic forms so that ALL of the viewer/listener's senses are stimulated - but particularly it's one to be embodied by a human form.
@dncnkid
@dncnkid 4 года назад
That may be, but it has to be remembered that the dance was choreographed to the music that had already been composed, not the other way around. Makarova was famous for the slow tempos she preferred in adagios, but today's dancers take them even slower. As slow as this adagio is, it is currently being performed at a tempo that makes it a full minute longer. At some point, not only do the notes cease to have any meaningful connections with each other, but the steps themselves lose any type of phrasing. Then the "dance" becomes just a series of poses. There has to be a balance, where the dancers can dance to the best of their ability, but that the musicians are also playing the music beautifully.

When Ivan hung up his tights and slippers for good, "Natasha" looked at it as a real loss--for her and for all of ballet. "Ivan is in top form. He is quitting far too soon." Gelsey Kirkland took to him as a personal favorite also. Huh. "Natasha" wanted him back that badly, eh? Right before his death, Gelsey asked him guest-teach at her school/company. I hope her reunion with Ivan was just as grand as this. A fitting "Swan Song" for a true prince...

Makarova's exquisite performance is breathtakingly beautiful and emotionally captivating, as is the stunning partnering of Nagy. This is a once- in- a lifetime performance. I usually love Itzhak Perlman's playing, but here I feel it is a bit too schmaltzy and it seems to override the performance of the dancers, rather than support it.
@johnmeyer77
@johnmeyer77 4 года назад
As I said in the description for this video, Perlman had to slow down the tempo tremendously to accommodate the dancers, and I think that significant change in tempo ended up altering the "vibe" that you pick up when you listen just to the music.

Tempo at the beginning a little rushed I think, for Makarova's liking - she was always one of those ballerinas to favour agonizingly slow tempos in this - and looking a little stiff in the back, still a vintage Makarova performance. It's always fascinating to watch how dancers and musicians work out the carpentry so that the music is played at a tempo that both the dancers favour or can manage, and one that is as close as possible to the composer's original markings. Beautiful work by all.

She is my all-time favorite. Her artistry and control were unreal. However, she got so thin near the end of her career, it was sometimes distracting. Such is the case with this performance for me. Her artistry here is incredible, but her incredibly boney legs and body were extremely distracting to me and sometimes detracted from her otherwise beautiful lines.

No, she did not. It’s never been a specific requirement, particularly for Odette. It wasn’t until the last 30 years that it became the standard. Either way, it doesn’t bear mentioning.
@avesraggiana
@avesraggiana 4 года назад
Actually, she did. She just didn't find an artistically valid or relevant reason to use it in this adagio. Dancing modern pieces by Glen Tetley, John Neumeier, Maurice Bejart, George Balanchine and Sir Kenneth MacMillan she'd deploy her 6 o'clock penchée very liberally. She even did one upside down while balancing on her partner's shoulder in a Roland Petit piece. Coaching the now-retired Uliana Lopatkina several years ago in this same Swan Lake Act II adagio, she told the younger ballerina to back off a little on the 6 o'clock arabesque penchée. "Don't hide your partner's face," was her admonishment. Great advice.
