Dover constituents react to news that their MP, Natalie Elphicke, has defected from the Conservative party to join Labour. Subscribe to our new podcast now, or you're a silly goose: linktr.ee/pubcast
@lukemclellan2141 no it's because of things like my best friend being dead thanks to people like him. It isn't just a difference of opinion anymore it's literally life and death for a lot.
@@lukemclellan2141Idiots vote Tory. They are supporting the indefensible. The Tories have absolutely no place in politics and should never be alliwed to govern ever again
@@moomin7461 I’m willing to have a little sportsman’s bet with you , there is not 1 safe tory seat now & the longer that sunak clings on without letting the people decide , the worse it will be for them !
Why are people surprised that this right wing tory has found a home I Starmer's Labour Party? Starmer has moved the party to the right of John Major's Conservative Party.
Over 50% of Kent will stay on their knees at the next election, begging the Tories for more. Grim, angry, chav infested towns like Ashford, Maidstone and Folkestone are amongst the most rabid right wing towns in the country. Essex is even worse!
She's not been allowed in the party that. Her defection is largely symbolic. Isn't going to be allowed to stand as an MP in the general. She's going to go and become an advisor on housing issues to Angela Reyna.
How they don’t see that these lame stream parties all 💩 in the same bucket I’ll never know , vote independent & watch them all spit their dummies out , look how they reacted to Galloway , imagine if it happened in every constituency across the country 😂 they couldn’t do any worse then the pos with seen over the years , they all lie to get into the parasitic government class then when they win they forget what they was voted in for , if voting made a difference it would be banned : uncle Joe
Another hit against Sunak, shows the country there's a place for everyone in this Labour Party. And everyone gets the same amount of votes. And you need votes to win an election
To be fair, in getting on for 70 years I've never once been approached by any pollster for my political views. So here I am .... disseminating the wisdom of decades / boring the arse off everyone (take your pick).
Yep, that’s all well and good if you want to be a centrist. I’d rather have rejected her unless (only devils advocate on this part) there’s a cross party numbers game going on behind closed doors to force an election, but I don’t see how that’s possible
@jamesarnold7253 The problem with this is that it's more the Tories self imploding than anything Labour is actually doing A large part of what kept the Tories in power is that the Murdoch empire favours them over anyone even slightly left of centre, which is why Starmer can't commit to anything other than extremely modest spending increases and a slightly more humane immigration policy.
@jamesarnold7253 context and, in the case of Corbyn, interference. There was a huge effort by the media to stifle and undermine a very large grassroots movement in support of Corbyn's Labour. By no means did everyone like JC but had the press and factions within the Labour party itself not done everything within their power to assassinate his character, it would be hard to say he wouldn't have put a dent in the Tories' control.
To the person asking why would a responsible adult take a child across the sea in a dangerous boat? A desperate one. And one that has seen more danger than anyone should in their lifetime.
Vote tories get tory stuff, boo and hoo. ''I thought she was better than that.'' - she got the bar pretty low when she defended her ex-husband but obviously Mr Dover Tory voter did not bother to think about looking into that.
Funny that he guy who said he'll be voting Tory was wearing a Trotsky cap . As for Elphicke there's something hidden in her move to labour of which we are not being told as per usual .
Nothing hidden. She is an unprincipled chancer who is hoping to stay in a job by joining the winning team. Starmer is an unprincipled chancer who would allow any ultra right winger to join the party if they might bring a few voters with him. Who next? Braverman? Farage? Laurence Fox?
@@bereal6590 Labour will never give you PR. And you can see for yourself how likely a move to the left is when hard-right lunatics like Elphicke are welcome in the party but Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn aren't. Sure, Labour aren't as bad as the Tories. But you're leaving in an absolute dreamland of your own imagination if you think they'll give you either of those things you just mentioned.
They Labour have ignored the working class of this country, I think they hate them. No good Labour MP's putting a pretend northern accents on, they are all privately educated, from middle class backgrounds, totally detected. Don't think many from former mining areas, steel areas or ship building areas want Labour in. I now find only one option and that is to vote Reform, at least I have a reason to put my X on the ballet paper, I guess.
"Our PR stunt has gone down like a cup of hot sick with a lot of people, including a sizeable portion of our voters, members and even an mp or two" PeOpLe aRe So NaIvE. I don't want any Tories(especially any of THIS BUNCH) in the Labour party, full stop ffs It shouldn't be controversial to say. If i wanted Tories i'd vote for the effing Tory party
The real enemy is unseen. They’ve been there from the start. Letting you wave your flag and believing any of it was really ever yours. The establishment never lose. Despite vile, untold greed and disgusting genocide.
'I'll definitely be voting Conservative again, no matter who it is.' @ 5:38. Jesus wept, what is wrong with these people? Have they been in a coma for the past 14 years?
He perfectly displayed his lack of understanding of regugee situations with that statement. I understand that he has probably never met, or known a refugee, nor been near an area from which refugees are fleeing, but this indicates the media's failure to educate the public.
Confused. What is her angle? Why is she even bothering? She is not standing in the election? What is in it for Labour? A passing bit of publicity, but the lasting damage created by the perception of such a right wing Tory joining Labour! It makes no sense. I hope the Greens, Lib Dems, SNP, PC and independents all have a good general election.
If Labour rejected this MP the right wing headlines would be 'No place in Labour for her or for you'. By accepting this MP Labour shows it's the party for everyone
Labour gets to make a jab at Tories, it shows Tories are divided and no longer representing what they used to. It does hurt Labour from Labour voters view but it is clearly a hope that it hurts Tories more and encourages Tory voters.
@@loveshine2012It is nice to know (on the part of this Briton here 🤳🙂) that you Americans appreciate our speech and our old codgers, miserable or otherwise! 😄😄👍
Rubbish, labour are now 30 points ahead of Tories, if Labour want to get a large minority over the Tories at the election Labour need to appeal to the whole of the electorate if Elphicke encourages more Tory voters to vote Labour hope a few more cross the floor.
She is stepping down at next election - so Labour will select a different person to stand at General Election, what Starmer has done is accepted her defection to show how Sunak and current Government is massively divided If she intended to stand again, I suspect Starmer would not have accepted the defection - however media is ensuring that point is missed
Dover was like a war zone at night 30 years ago. It’s a very dirty, run-down, depressed place that has the usual social issues, like low wages, low aspirations, high social deprivation and poverty. Yet the locals bend over backwards to vote Conservative. I have absolutely no sympathy
@@dicklebilly3115 Yes. In my opinion any MP defecting is cheating their constituents and should face a by-election as they weren't voted in on the basis of the party they've jumped to. I think this should always apply.
@@slightlyconfused876 I know it's not how the system works, that's why it's a suggestion to change the rules so that defections don't become the norm. And it does matter (Maybe not to you) as her own constituents have already said so. As you don't seem to understand things very easily maybe you should change your name to massively confused.
I'm surprised they haven't gone for a private company, I mean, tens of billions a year straight into a Tory donor's pockets and they might well increase processing by up to 1%.
I’d love a split away from the south of England, so Yorkshire, the north-west and the north-east can be rid of places like Kent, Norfolk, Hampshire etc. London ought to leave too. That would destroy the so-called ‘rich’ Home Counties and the Tory south-east 💀💀
3:52 this is the problem with British politics. People are so dumbed down by the media that they think "give the other party a go", not realising that the other party are not going to change anything.
@@slightlyconfused876 yes. If there's a specific criterion. Labour will not change any substantial policy on economics, foreign policy or law and order. They will continue with austerity.
It was interesting that the pro-tory guy used the word 'foreigners' and not refugees or immigrants when talking about the small boats. "more foreigners in the rest of the country"
I don't mind accepting Tory voters ... but I do NOT want to accept right-wing Tory MPs. This is all about her, protecting her seat, not changing her views.
Tell me you know nothing about politics without saying you nothing about politics. She isn't standing and draws people from the right. It's not about her popularity it's about drawing votes to the centre. That's how you win popularity contests especially when it's as rigged as ours.
No they haven't. Not in the slightest, she is stepping down at the election, will have no influence or power over anyone or anything, and made Sunak look a dick. Win Win.
@7.26 One that has run out of options, that is who. Being told by such compassionate states who were all for bombing and murdering of your home country but when that natural immigration start flowing their way, their xenophobia comes out, forcing a parent to desperately thinking getting on a boat is the best option for your child. In retrospect, of course the parent will blame their decisions but in truth Mr @7.26 is more responsible for the child's death and his kind, but they will never accept it.
What kind of responsible adult brings a child across the Channel?" Erm..a parent who risks everything to get their child to safety; no matter that cost. So, actually, a very responsible one. Some of these lot of proper thickos
Haven't read all the comments but it's clear that none of those interviewed have picked up on the fact that she's not standing again she's lost interest in ghe role and that by no longer representing the party in government she will no longer have to face the flak about them. So this is about winding down from a job that was obtained by default after her husband's exit. She could resign of course but would any of us forfeit the salary needlessly when it's only a few months anyway. As a Brit now living in SE Asia I would the prognosis for the UK isn't very promising. Some of those interviewed here didn't even understand the question...
The man in the checked shirt talking about people being irresponsible taking kids across the channel. What on earth is he on about? They're fleeing to make a better life for their family. Whats the alternative? Leave them in france unaccompanied?
@CW-bw7pv A lot of people fleeing may have family in the UK, making it for easier to settle. For the same reasons, a lot of asylum seekers settle in France. Due to britains colonial past, english is spoken fluently in many former colonies. Would you rather go to a place where you can communicate freely with people or settle in a country where it is necessary to learn a new language.
3 Tories now joined this new Labour. All of them blending in. Shows where Labour is at, and going, more than the decline of the Tories. Any hope of change under a different parliament is sadly disappearing over the horizon.
@@nathanaelsmith3553 I’m sure she’s probably been told that. Maybe she believes it too. In all honesty, she’s just being used by Starmer as a bat to beat the Tories with. Far too many on the left are reading too much into this. She won’t be influencing policy, she’ll be out of the Commons and forgotten about in six months, and Dover will be properly red. Meanwhile Sunak’s precious stop the boats crusade has been torpedoed by one of his own and the Tory right are spitting chips over it, which in itself is enough reason to celebrate it.
Starmer whored himself out to the lowest bidder in accepting Elphicke into the Labour party. He would have made much bigger waves if he had rejected her, Sunak would still be one more down and Starmer's integrity would be in tact.
It was all political theatre to poke a finger in the Tories/Rishi's eye. A parting shot from Elphicke as she heads out of office. Sadly also showing us that politics is it's own sport and it's players are detached from the role they should have in improving our lives.
Now she’s switched, she’ll be properly scrutinised for everything she’s ever said and done. It’s like we’ve come to expect horrific behaviour from the right wing and let them do anything. Messed up country
