"Tú alfagra land mítt" is the national anthem of the Faroe Islands, a self-governing archipelago of Denmark. The song was written in 1906 by Símun av Skarði, a headteacher who supported greater autonomy for the Faroe Islands. The melody was composed in 1907 by Petur Alberg, a violinist, and the song was first performed publicly in 1907 at a concert in Tórshavn. Initially attributed to an Icelandic composer named Jón Sveinsson, the song was eventually revealed to be the work of Skarði and Alberg. "Tú alfagra land mítt" quickly became popular and was published in Faroese newspapers and songbooks. It won out in a competition with another song, "Eg oyggjar veit," to become the national anthem.
The song has been translated into several languages, including Danish, English, German, Icelandic, and Nynorsk. It is a beloved cultural symbol in the Faroe Islands and is sung at festivals and in the Faroese Church. The national radio station, Útvarp Føroya, plays the anthem every night before ending its broadcast. In 1990, it was added to the psalm book of the Faroese Church.
The anthem's lyrics celebrate the natural beauty of the Faroe Islands and express the singer's love for their homeland. The first line, "Tú alfagra land mítt," is often used as a phrase of endearment for the Faroe Islands. The melody is a simple, stirring tune that is easy to sing and has become familiar to generations of Faroese people.
