National Beehive Frames - Converting from National Deep to 14 x 12
In this video I show you how to convert from one size brood box to another.
I am converting from a standard national brood box to 14 x 12 brood box.
Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.
We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.
www.blackmount...
We supply F1 Mated Buckfast Queens throughout the season. These are genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our RU-vid channel.
On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.
#NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.
We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.
We aim to bridge the gap between commercial and hobbyist beekeepers and cater for beekeepers of all experience levels.

Hi Laurence good simple method for swapping boxes over, and doing comb changes, keep them coming.

Thanks very much! Yes - good point as well. Perfect method for a comb change also. Plenty more to come now we have that weird warm thing in the sky, that I believe is called 'the sun'.

I now have my plan of action coming together for spring. Migrate over to a poly 14 x 12 as demonstrated. What I enjoy is that in learning about one thing, I learn about another (in this case chalk brood) so that's really helpful. Thanks so much !!!

Good stuff..I started using double brood to avoid having to try and get brood out of supers...its just a waste of frames. 14x12 might be a good solution for me....incidentally I could tell as soon as the video started that you had stopped using a smoker ..
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 4 года назад
Yes - they were a bit cranky werent they. I use a smoker in this apiary now as are always a bit tetchy compared to the buckfast. Double brood works great for the correct bees but the wrong bees in double brood is a waste of frames and honey. Its all about fitting the boxes to the bees, not fitting the bees to the boxes :)

I've got a few really strong hives come out of winter and want to do this. I'm in Cornwall and the weather is no good for inspection yet but keen to give them space as every sunny day they look really busy. Do you think it's a bit early to do this now or wait until the flow is on? Loving the videos by the way had good results with the demeree (however it's spelt) Cheers

How about a video doing this in reverse? 14x12 to national. I'm doing it next season so some advice would be good 👍

Came back to watch this one again! Adapted a few double brood BS hives. I run 14 x 12 so the plan is to overwinter and do this in the spring. My question is how would you go about splinting the double brood onto 2 14 x 12? One would have the queen so no drama (follow you vid) but what’s best for the 2nd one? Add a frame of eggs for them to requeen or how quickly after doing the split can you add a queen? How would you approach it? Thanks
@hawklord7008
@hawklord7008 2 года назад
I would never add a box of foundation under, always above so that the heat from the colony provides heat to draw the foundation.
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 года назад
Works both ways. Just done a video showing that bees will draw foundation in Oct. They can certainly manage underneath in the summer months. It doesnt make a massive difference though so above or below is fine.
@hawklord7008
@hawklord7008 2 года назад
@@BlackMountainHoney I always find the foundation is drawn straighter if its placed above. A little early to be adding a 14 x 12 whilst you still have fondant on, nights will still be on the cool side in early spring.
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 года назад
@@hawklord7008 As you point out. The heat will rise, so the brood is placed in the warmest place of the combined boxes. Early spring build up is rapid. The fondant was left on to provide fuel to draw the foundation which took place rapidly.

@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 года назад
Maybe a bit late. Good to do at the end of the season though as the bees will end up in the top box over winter and you can them just remove the lower box.
