Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. One of the most challenging skills to master as an American Mah Jongg player is picking a hand. In this video, we’re going to do random pulls to demonstrate how to find the strength in a dealt hand because that’s where it all begins.
These videos also may help with how to pick a hand:

I especially appreciate your thinking outloud the backup, or Plan B, options. Very helpful video, per usual! Thanks so much, Michele. You are most generous to the Mahj community.

Michele, you really nailed it with this kind of video. Thinking aloud and finding alternate hands is sooooo valuable. I could watch this kind of video all day! It’s awesome when you rethink something and explain why you’ve rethought it. Getting inside your thinking is exactly what helps us become better players. Thank you! Please make more of this kind of instructional thinking videos. Really appreciate you!

Another helpful video. I watch, holding my card, following along. I pause the video and think what I would do, then turn it back on to see what you are doing. It's very helpful! Thank you!!

this is my most useful video right now. thanks for taking the time to make it. #3 was so "odd" with all those tiles coming in like that. that was my favorite hand in 2021. hope it comes in for me in 2022. 🙏🤟🥰

This was very helpful! I enjoyed seeing how you would figure out what hand to go with. Thanks Michele!

Pull 2 I might have held all the cons cracks for the 7 pair hand. Maybe because I don’t have a dot for that hand, but I think I’d hold at least the first round of Charleston. Your plan probably was better, but a hapless pair hand is so tempting.

Why are you picking up tiles to the right that you discarded earlier in the shuffle at the end. You already had them previously and discarded them
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE Год назад
There are two rounds of passes in the Charleston, 1st round (right-across-left), and 2nd round (left-across-right) with an optional across. Since the tiles being passed are often seen in the 2nd Charleston, I take three random tiles from the tiles that were passed previously to mimick what could happen in a real game.

When do you get the time to deliberate like this?
@mahjcon
@mahjcon 2 года назад
During the game, players should take no more than 15 seconds to decide on what tiles to pass first. Thereafter, a good rule of thumb is no more than 10 seconds. This exercise is to practice that initial decision making. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be when playing and hopefully, with that comfort, make quicker decisions.

How do you memorize the card?
@MAHJLIFE
@MAHJLIFE 2 года назад
For me, memorizing the card happens naturally in three ways, 1) new card analysis, 2) skill-building exercises, and 3) consistent play. For links to the first two, download this PDF: tinyurl.com/y9s4pwsb. If you want to play at Mahjong Time please use my affiliate link goo.gl/UQmWQU

Her basic is TOO basic and then when it came to "Decision Making" which I really needed, it was too advanced and she presumed the viewer knew too much. It was frustrating.
