Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. One of the things that differentiate American mah jongg from all the other versions is the use of jokers. Only one of the ten categories on the card require jokers - Quints. All the other categories on the card can be played without them.

If I start with four or more jokers I go to the QUINTS (not sure if there is a QUINT hand on your mock card).

There are four Quints in the mock card - one Consecutive Run, one Like Numbers, and two Winds. If I have 3 or more jokers, I think about Quints too but having strong multiples is also helpful.

MIchele, Hi, it's been awhile since I had a question - we are playing every Monday Afternoon and today we had a question arise about Jokers. Someone was trying to make the card line of All Pairs. So Jokers were not of any help to her hand. Another player called a 7 Crack and made a Pung (3 of a Kind) and put it up on her rack. Then the other player asked, I need one of those 7 cracks to make a pair of 7 Cracks ------ can I put one of my jokers up on that players tile and take their 7Crack to complete my PAIR that I need? Is this a legal move? Hope I explained it correctly. Basically it is the opposite of getting someones joker that is placed on the above rack. Joey DiMarco

Hi Joey, you explained it well… a joker cannot be used to make an exchange for a natural tile 🤓

I always shoot for consecutive run when at least 3 jokers are in my hand. Although one time I had 6 jokers and lost. Lol. Now that's frustrating 😳

Ouch. I agree about choosing Consecutive Run - it is by far the most flexible category on the card!

What do you do if someone at your table declares your hand is dead?

If another player disqualifies you and they are correct, you concede and stop playing. Otherwise, if the other player is wrong - you have a viable or valid hand - you contest by saying, "My hand is valid and intact" and continue to play. At the end of the game, the two players plead their case and the wrong player pays the other 50 points/cents.

I love your videos so helpful in building my confidence, I have told all the ladies in the various groups I play in about you. And how to find your videos on RU-vid. I just figured out how to change my photo and name, I used to be known by something like Atmosphere 123 or something like that
