In this third segment from the celebration of Native Hairstyles at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, numerous representatives of southwestern tribes demonstrate and talk about the significance of native hairstyles.
I'm really surprised that these folks are so willing to share their traditions like this. I can see that not all Natives are so willing. I hope and pray that all will be respectful and humble about it. This really is a privilege.
Maybe people today will realize what many generations have lost due to the horrendous treatment & separations. My great grandfather & grandmothers had their hair cut & were beaten for using their languages. Some of the traditions were brought back but many more were lost. Btw, My (m)grandmother used handmade brooms much like the brush the man on here was referring to that his tribe used. I don’t recall the type of natural straws used in my grams broom but I do remember tying the top sections with her & wrapping them to be given as gifts. There was even a specific way of using them when sweeping. My family are from Eastern tribes tho we’ve somewhat been strewn across the country.
I absolutely love the way natives have names pick the names and change the names as the person grows and gets a personality it's so beautiful and the fact that they keep it with nature and meaningful makes it so much better

Growing up as a child, my grandfathers, fathers and uncles all had long hair. My fondness for it came from them, then I got introduced to RockNRoll and Heavy Metal. As a child, I was often mistaken as a girl but I didn't mind. Every night I got a Hopi education and that made me more resilient. I keep my hair long although it could be bothersome but I can't imagine my life without it.
I love the American Indian society.I read every book i could about them.I love there simple ways of life.In there times they never waste anything.....they kill what they needed.They never wasted anything.I feel so sorry for what was done to them.

@@Toci333 I believe you. However, I don't know why you want to curse me. My paternal grandfather was first nation Ojibwe from the Swan Creek Black River tribe (his name was Albert Moore, his mother was Annamae Dagg, and her mother was Julia Fisher) and what the government did to him and his family was despicable. Though he was a survivor, the things that were done to him in the Boarding School just about broke him. My paternal Uncle was adopted by the Patowatami Cheif and lived on the reservation near Gun Lake, Michigan back in the 1970s-1980s, and he told me what the government did and still continue to do to the American Indian. He also told me of the impoverished conditions that the majority of American Indians live in on those reservations. Now, the only thing that I can think of is maybe the way that I worded my response to the initial post could have came off negatively but that was not my intent. Anyways, regardless, I wish you a belated and safe Happy New Year.
It is a wonderful culture and I have been learning about this. So interesting. Nice to know how different customs and hairstyles differ. Hopi and all the First Nation peoples have respect for their elders and teach their young so many useful things.Shells are beautiful and jewellery is splendid.Recently a Native American hoop dancer passed at the age of thirty,his name was Nakotah Larance He was amazing and did so much along with his Father who played the drum for his performances. I request that you say a prayer for all of his family. He died climbing a bridge in July. Extremely sad. I believe he was from the Hopi Nation New Mexico. He taught younger people’s to hoop dance. May he always be remembered and honoured too. Thank you so very much. I appreciate all your hairstyles and being shown how you do them.

I'm loving the french braid here. I've always loved having my hair braided very tightly, which is the same way that I braid hair, lol. braiding it tightly like that, holds it in place, stimulates hair growth, and makes the hair wavy when you take it out.
I really enjoy learning about the Native American culture, and how they lived, worked, fought, and died. My husband was part Blackfoot , so I have wanted to always learn the Blackfoot ways.
I love learning about this kind of culture! Sometimes I wish I had been born into a family that had such strong spiritual traditions. I respect all peoples heritage, & wish that all could do the same! Thank you for posting this educational video 🙏🏻💞
My dad is Sioux and I have always felt cheated that I have never learned the language. I know some words, but to actually speak the language must be much different

You have s very interesting culture...i have seen American Natives clothes from Peru or Ecuador...when they dance and play music with ocarina, and flutes and they wear mocasines also

My grandfather was half Indigenous (like actually, not fictionally). He passed away when my mom was really young. There’s a lot about my own ancestry and heritage I may never know b/c black people are often excluded from tribal affiliation. Like I never knew why I had an affinity for tying my hair the way I do… after seeing these videos it makes me wonder…
Indigenous people do not turn people away if they can prove their lineage. Not by those kits sold online but from a person's relations. Many blacks married into Native Tribes. Many Natives hid Black slaves. The truth comes out when you start going back through linege.

Amanda H, you have to dig out the Yucca by the root. And attaching to the yucca root will be a bulb, shaped in a figure 8. You must then pull off the Yucca bulb from the root, then grind it in water.
I do not think so. But they have festivals called Pow Wows, where they get together and bring their Teepees (tents), cook traditional food, and dance. When I lived in Nebraska my Mom and I used to go every year. Their dancing is amazing!!!

I have a question I was taking a walk and a Swainson Hawk dropped a a Feather in my Path. I picked it up and yes the Hawk is My Spiritual Medicine Totem. And I have a lot of Crow Feathers a Great Horned Owl feather a Flicker Bird feather a snowy owl feather from a one of my Native American friends in Montana. I am sure my Ancestors were giving me a lot of Guidance and messages too from the Spirit Realm
@@Toci333 It depends on how far back in History you want to go. Mankind came from Africa, but that is so far in the past that most people do not identify with it. Truth is Native Americans came across a land bridge from Russia into Alaska about 25 thousand years ago. That was when the water level was lower than it is now and there was a piece of land that allowed man to just walk here. Some followed the coastline in their boats to get to the Americas. You have made a lot of comments on this video, mostly answering other people's comments. Why all the anger? You can not teach others the truth by yelling in their face that they are wrong. Just say, I think you are wrong and this is why. Than explain to them why.
The hair is stiffened by dirt and oil, then it stays up. They don't have alot of water there, so that's partly why they wash their hair so rarely. Only on very special occasions.
Natives use black hair and the length of their hair to show strength and intelligence and turquoise beads that are difficult to find. Their ancestors have always done that. Brown or blonde hair will not do.
Turquoise is easy to find here in the US. It was very popular in the 60's and 70's and it was everywhere. Still easy to find in the south west US. If you are a true Native American you will have black hair so no need to worry about it. But many Native Americans have married into the white culture and sometimes their children will have blond or brown hair. So blonde or brown hair will do just fine. They still are part Native American.
If she was going to Pow Wow or Big Time dance for a few days tight braids is a necessity! No reason to have to rebraid each day, too much other work to be done. Perfect example imo.
Learning about other Cultures is important for understanding and to create respect between Cultures. Most other Cultures are happy to share such as the Scots, French, Italians, Chinese, Thai, Hawaiian ECT....why not native Americans.
