A lot of newer fans might not realize this, but Matsuri is a 1st generation member. Before 1st gen, Hololive was only Sora and Roboco. Back then, nobody had any idea Hololive would be successful at all. For all they knew, people would lose interest in VTubers in a few months. There's no overstating the role the early members had in creating the industry and the group we have today.

Very true as alot of new comers now, Vtubers big and small, independent or VTuber groups, have so much competition for viewership is hard. As someone who's ... Guess you could say small time promoter, trying to spread the word around is quite tough when people are so uncertain about someone new vs someone who's been around like Hololive. Even being a RU-vidr takes dedicated years for a channel to be popular, beat out the algorithm, and get dedicated fans. Tough shit indeed, but once your there .... It's gravy.

I think for me Marine's 3D model reveal is what got me in. Before I had no idea what Hololive was even a thing. I had used to accidentally watch those that made ASMR without knowing who they were (Mel, Haato, Choco, Roboco) Before long I was absorbed into the fold, and don't regret any of it. Before late February this year, I had no idea hololive even existed. Things changed when I saw the clip of Matsuri's Cat Mario stream, though it took me three more months to find Matsuri's channel, watched an ongoing live stream of her (an RFA stream), and then subscribed to her. Then, here I am today, deep inside this holo-abyss.

For me, as soon as I watched my first VTuber from looking up the artist of a song which turned out to be a VTuber; I didn't resist it. In fact I'd say I jumped straight into the rabbit hole actively looking for VTubers instead of waiting for a recommended video without a single bit of regret. Even now I regret nothing.

@@rdxzero if I remember correctly I think RU-vid’s strictness actually first started in 2008 due to a lawsuit from a big company. To prevent something like that from happening again law required they have no knowledge of copyrighted materials on their platform and they had to make an algorithm to remove them. The demonetization side of it started with adpocalypse happened but I don’t really think it has to do with cancel culture, rather some advertisers only wanting to be associated with “family friendly” content. Advertisers have been doing this before Twitter and even the internet, causing shows and other media to be censored and taken off the air.

@@rdxzero no, the cause of adpocalypse is not strictly because of pewdiepie, iirc there was a video with racism/propaganda content, but that video is still monetized, that's what caused big advertiser like coca cola to pull out their advertisement from youtube, and then other company followed coca cola's step. Then the copyright problem started when youtube implemented a new feature called content ID, basically it enables copyright owners to claim a video, without youtube reviewing that claim, and that feature is automated with youtube AI. That's why even if there's only 3 seconds of copyrighted material such as a scene from a film, or a section of a song, that video will automatically claimed by copyright owners.

Thank you for translating this. I tried to listen to her streams but I don't really understand Japanese that well. It's been a while since I've heard one of her talks again. I've been caught up a little on the new "hype" with girls reaching 1M subs and all the new girls and whatnot but all that time I kept saying Matsuri is my favorite. This may be a silly thing to say but if you were to translate more of this I will be eternally grateful.

As a resident of the Virtual Universe since 2018, I too was scepticle on how far this culture would grow. After the War of Activ8, I thought our roll had ended, and then Hololive happened. Then Covid-19 happened, giving everyone more time on RU-vid, to see our glorious culture. And here we see today, 3 Million members from Hololive, all members above 300k... and showing no signs of stopping. Glory to the Virtual Universe! May it shine forever!

Top spot has to go to the Hero X Matsuri sleepover one, but all of them are so precious, and this one is certainly one of the best too. Anyway, the uncertainty and instability of your income as a RU-vidr sounds pretty stressful, especially with RU-vid taking a massive cut despite being more of a hindrance half the time. I think the first ever clip I saw of Vtubers was of Miko screaming cuz they had pandas in Minecraft. The clip wasn’t even translated bc there was still few dedicated translators. I think she was at 40 something thousand subscribers. I’m really grateful to the talents but more so to the translators because that was really the only way I and many others could enjoy the Vtubers.

Hopefully this puts into perspective on this thing called "survivorship bias." Just because there is Hololive and/or Nijisanji, doesn't mean the path to become a Vtuber is a guaranteed success. The opposite is the harsh truth. You can make it, but do not expect that "hard work" alone is enough. Same thing with freelancing... My luck, and hard work for 2 - 3 years starting from zero, allowed me to have this job with (relatively) stable income. I can really understand (and have experienced) the same thing as her... Some months you are rolling in the dough and consider freelancing a "better" alternative than 9-5 job, some months you just aren't going to earn even half what you have earned previously despite you're working nearly 16 hours a day with a rush jobs (dissertation and/or thesis in 6 hours, yeah good luck) only to get fucked over by asshole clients coming in droves and eventually accusing you of something that you did not do... If I have old clients though... I thank them for their patronage and trust when I was green on the field. I always have to keep that in mind. Yep. Matsuri's twitcast is chuck-filled with wisdom.

This is really the reason why I love Matsuri. She might be a pervert but she's really a good person. It's basically a streaming service that connects with Twitter. I don't know all the details myself regarding what its intended use is or what kind of special features it offers, but basically Matsuri uses it as a quick and easy way to chat a bit with her fans whenever she feels like it. She only has to talk: no model, no setting up the stream, not as big of an audience, not as much need to entertain as on the channel, she can just start one via her phone while eating or doing other stuff,… It's just very convenient. The spontaneity with which these happen is probably what makes them feel so special for many.

Right now in 2020? Maybe No. Three of my favourite indie idol group disbanded, they income is mostly come from live concert and 2020 hits hard. Fortunately Matsuri fav. Idolgroup "you'll melt more" is still around.
