I'm a little late to this party but it came up in my feed today (2019) and I did appreciate your recipe. A word about baking soda is that while natural and usually safe (esp compared to other deodorizing ingredients) it is still a reactive chemical and a base (opposite of acid) and can in fact burn you just the way an acid can. The concern is not in using it but leaving it there on the skin. It may be more suitable in a soap recipe where it is rinsed off. So just to summarize in itself the baking soda can irritate chemically (base burn) or mechanically (from the gritty texture rubbing against sensitive armpits) but the potential for chemically reacting to sweat is pretty real too. I'm not saying to stop if this is working well for you just a bit of info. If you have sensitive skin or if you are having trouble these are some likely explanations. I wonder if you can speak if charcoal would be an appropriate ingredient in a homemade deodorant? Thanks for your video.

bentonite clay should be stirred with a wooden or ceramic spoon. it will weaken its effectiveness when stirred with aluminum because what it does is extracts heavy metals from the body. I love your recipe, it looks great I'm looking forward to experimenting with it! Thank you for everything

You use more wax! and since coconut oil is liquid at room temperature, don't use it, just use the wax and the butter! So, Ella's recipe would be something like this: 2 tbsp of wax 3 tbsp of butter (cocoa butther is best for warmer climates) 1 tsp baking soda 3 tbsp arrowroot powder / bentonite 15 drops essential oil - I used cinnamon & tangerine Keep it ut of the sun and heat (refrigerator is a good option!) and you're good to go! Just remember, even if you don't put it in the fridge it will be a harder deodorant, not so smooth! But I used it anyway through the summer - we had temperatures around 40ºC, in the shade!! Worked well also! ;)

So what part of this deodorant is the part that DEodorizes? As far as I can tell, the coconut oil and shea butter are for moisturizing the skin; the wax, starch, and clay are to adjust the consistency; and the essential oils give it a bit of fragrance. How is this different from using the essential oils with a bit of carrier oil or applying a perfume to your armpits?

Two things, though I’m new to this: 1) It appears to me that you’re not making a deodorant (kills bacteria) but an antiperspirant. Bentonite clay isn’t antimicrobial but a pore sealer. This is genius, if you are into antiperspirants. 2) If you are trying to avoid aluminum compounds, why use bentonite clay? It’s an aluminum compound.

@jamesostick7364
@jamesostick7364 5 лет назад
1) Bentonite clay isn’t metallic or elemental aluminum. It’s a compound with aluminum atoms in it. It’s like graphite (elemental carbon) vs. carbon dioxide (carbon containing compound). 2) There’s no actual evidence that aluminum compounds on your skin are bad for you. The studies they used were misreported. Old Spice in a petri dish seem to damage DNA, and breast cancer tends to start near the armpit. However there are no known aluminum compounds that leach through the skin or evidence that women who use antiperspirant are more likely to get breast cancer.

Hello I love your DIYs, and I wanna make a suggestion. If you could take in consideration the PH for the skin! The skin has a protective film that is mildly acidic and it hosts the bacteria that makes our skin function properly, somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5. Any thing alkaline (like baking soda) dries the skin and speeds up the aging. Keeping the PH of the skin mildly acidic is key, research was lead for 8 years on women who use alkaline products on their skin, and they aged 50% more then the acidic group. Exact opposite for the mouth! No lemon or apple cider vinegar.
@EK59819
@EK59819 8 лет назад
What do you mean by "exact opposite for the mouth" - does it mean baking soda is good for your mouth and lemon is not?

so we are suppose to avoid baking soda. I'm sorry are we suppose to avoid lemon and apple cider as well? please clarify.
@SuperBooker2010
@SuperBooker2010 8 лет назад
Baking soda is amazing for the mouth. It helps reclassifying the teeth. Lemon and apple cider vinegar on the other hand make teeth sensitive and they cause erosion of the teeth. These two are acidic, and baking soda is alkaline. On the other hand, the skin of our body needs to be mildly acidic, so lemon and apple cider vinegar are amazing for the skin, and baking soda or anything alkaline dries the skin and make it age faster.

Hi Ela, I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, if not - apologies! I've made the deodorant stick and loved it!…until about a week later I developed eczema under one arm. I thought it might be that I had also changed my soap in the shower. So I went back to my usual soap, didn't use any deodorant (gulp!) and waited for the eczema to clear - which it did, about 5 days later. Then I tried the deodorant again. Straight away I got the rash back. Have you had anyone else mention this? If so, how did they adjust your recipe? Thoughts? Many thanks, Dee.
@tdginter
@tdginter 7 лет назад
Sounds like a reaction to an ingredient used. If it was truly eczema, it wouldn't have disappeared when you stopped using it. Eczema is diet related. Try using fresh lemon or lime. It works great. I've used it prior to a 90 minute workout and it prevented sticky odors. It doesn't prevent sweating, but sweating is good to allow since it's 1 method to help the body detox.
@HimeGabi
@HimeGabi 7 лет назад
Dee Hyde that's the baking soda. I've had the same reaction to natural deodorant. it messes with the pH balance in your skin which causes the rash. Some people recommend a dab of apple cider vinegar before applying the natural deodorant to neutralize the soda. Also you could try just making it without the soda.

Can adding too much bentonite clay make the deodorant cakey? I found mine to get cakey after a while. I didn't use baking soda because it irritates my skin. Instead I used 2tbs on the bentonite clay and 2tbs of corn starch.

I used this deodorant for about a year and then eventually developed a fungal infection on my armpit. My dermatologist said that it was due to the coconut oil and shea butter because they adhere to the armpit and trap moisture, which is conducive to candida growth. I don’t know if this is the case for everyone but just an FYI

I used 50/50 coconut oil and shea butter as well as 50/50 arrowroot powder and bentonite clay, as suggested. I'm very sensitive to most fragrances, including natural ones, but I can handle tea tree, eucalyptus, and peppermint, so I used 9 drops of tea tree oil. All three of these are supposedly antimicrobial so maybe they will help kill off bacteria that contribute to body odor? The overall smell was very earthy...it pretty much smelled like dirt with a very faint herbal sent. I personally prefer this natural scent though, and am very happy with it. One complaint I have is that the deodorant is not as solid as I thought it would be. It came out a bit creamy. I used the same amount of wax as was used in the video, since I am living somewhere with a similar climate. Maybe my wax pellets were larger, so a teaspoon of mine had a greater mass than the ones in the video? I think I read somewhere that unrefined shea butter has a lower melting point than refined shea butter- and I used unrefined. I'm not sure if this is what made the difference, since it still isn't anywhere near the temperature necessary to melt unrefined shea butter. Despite being a little too melty for me, I loved this simple recipe and would absolutely make it again with slight adjustments!

does the wax help to keep it solid? because i only use coconut oil and put it in a little container it still gets thick (not runny) but not as solid as yours. or maybe i should keep it in the fridge all the time? what would you suggest? thanks

***** For a lot of people it is irritating. Baking soda is the wrong pH and can disrupt the pH of your skin. It depends the person but in general its recommended not to use baking soda for your skin because of the pH difference.

I make homemade deodorant and everyone that has used it has had no complaints. Every video that i have watched has used too much baking soda. It only take a small amount. Remember, the minty essential oil (peppermint, spearmint etc,.) mixed with the BK may cause your underarm to burn. In this case, start using a very small amount of each.

Awesome deodorant. Thank you! I make exactly the same deodorant (thanks to you ) but I also add a pinch of zinc oxide and it really works. This is the first natural deodorant that actually works for me and it is probably because of the clay. My armpits are always dry and fill clean trough the whole day. so happy, thanks again :)

I love that you have brought this great recipe to the world. We have been making a similar recipe for YEARS and it really does work. Just a fyi for those looking to try: there can be a detox period during which you might be more stinky, lasting from 1-2 weeks. Please don't let this deter you, though. It is easily remedied by reapplication. After that it is smoooth sailing. I am and have always been a heavy sweater and this works great. Even better, IMHO, than traditional deos/antiperspirants which always left me smelling revolting by the end of the day.. HIH

@@repeatthesoundingjoy328 we just use beeswax, arrowrrot powder, baking soda, whatever oils/ butters I have on hand, and essential oils ( a mix that varies, but I always include patchouli because it lasts and tee tree because it is anti-microbial and usually lavender). Sorry, I don't have measurements, as I eyeball it. If I write it down next time, I will edit my comment. You caould look up a recipe that is similar online, though and tweak it.

HI, our videos are really great! I love your recipes. I have been making my own products for about a year and for the most part I have been happy with the results ( I am having a very difficult time with the diy homemade toothpaste though , YUKK ! But I want to try one more recipe before I give up) but I feel like they are a little boring. Your recipes have that little extra something that makes them a better product and a little more special. My fave is the mascara so far. Oh and I wanted to tell you .... You should never use any kind of metal with Bentonite clay. It will have a nasty reaction .. I was using a metal spoon to scoop out mine from the container and by the time I got to the the bottom it was really nasty. Thanks for the awesome videos !!!

I am impressed by how smoothly your development stage goes. I'm not as neat unfortunately but I have been trying different recipes for deodorants... @wellnessmama.com I learned to add these two additional ingredients to absorb odors for those who may sweat a lot 1) activated charcoal two capsules 2) probiotics capsules P.S. I'm gonna copy your idea to use empty glue stick containers that have been cleaned and sterilized Thanks again👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
@natashagreen-chillaxedprod7769
I believe if your not Qualified to use Essential Oils then you shouldn’t use them as there are toxic oils that aren’t allowed to be absorbed into the skin for those that are on Warfarin, Antidepressants, Heart & Blood Pressure Medications, Elderly, Pregnant & Breast feeding, high risk pregnancy & Kids under 7yrs. If you want to know them just ask

I think paraffin (wax) is harmful though, isn’t it? It clogs the pores and blocks sweating. Not a good thing I guess to add to the deodorant.
