I think oil is slept upon. I love using oil as a prepoos and an oil based scalp treatment on my scalp also prepoo. The only issue I see with oil is if you aren't properly cleansing the oil out of your hair. Different things work for different people but it's all about trial and error. I wouldn't completely write off oil for myself purely because it does work so I ain't gonna try to fix something that ain't broken. Also loved the longer video! So much information packed in.
@BrittanyMia
@BrittanyMia Год назад
I think so too. Because I’m ultimately trying to shorten my wash day, she recommended that I not use it. However, there is nothing wrong with oil so long as it’s properly cleansed out of our hair when it needs to be. Absolutely, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Do what works for you.

I found that using a balancing deep conditioner every time I wash my hair keeps it in tip top shape. This is because I am getting protein and moisture from one product instead of fluctuating between moisture and protein every week. Adowa is a really good moisture balance DC and the new melanin hair care deep conditioner. HASK with coconut oil is also another great one ‼️

I use a squirt bottle to apply slightly diluted shampoo to my scalp if necessary then I go in with a gentle shampoo brush/scalp massager. I'm glad she mentioned scalp exfoliants. If my shampoo doesn't contain an exfoliating ingredient, I will use a scalp scrub or scalp serum treatment. There's so many on the market now but I look for active ingredients to gauge whether they are worth buying or not.

I also pre-poo with oil 2 to 3 hours before I wash my hair. It has made an amazing difference in the overall health of my hair. I use the Camille Rose Coco nibs (I think that's what it's called) I apply it to my scalp and down the shaft of my hair and let it sit while I do what I need to do and sometimes I even go to sleep with it and wash it in the morning.

You are my favorite because you still do what you want with your hair. Nothing is wrong with using the oil unless you don’t properly cleanse your hair. I’m thinking of trying hot oil treatments too. Why are some hair stylists against oil!
@BrittanyMia
@BrittanyMia Год назад
She’s not completely against oil, but she knows that a lot of people don’t thoroughly shampoo their hair and leaving oil in the hair before conditioning and adding hydration (water) back into the hair can cause dehydration. However, she is all for oil if you can properly cleanse it out of your hair. My issue is that I’m cleansing my hair, but I’m not cleansing my scalp thoroughly so adding on another product to cleanse out of my scalp would most likely cause problems for me especially since my goal is to lower my time I spend doing my hair right now. However, I do what I want Lol so I may very well try it in the future.

I’m also intrigued by mild cleansers and bond builders. For me, mild cleansers are perfect to use mid week, if I need to shampoo at all. I’m working on balancing because I’ve been using my clarifying shampoo too often. If you would like a suggestion, the K18 leave in treatment is fantastic. If it was between that and OlaPlex, I would choose the K18. Mainly because it’s a one product wonder while OlaPlex recommend you buy almost the entire line.

I feel like Aphogee and Olaplex target different things! I started using Olaplex maybe a month ago, but I gave it a break because I wanted to try Epres. However, I do still keep Aphogee in my routine. I may try going without it just to see how my hair reacts with only Olaplex or Epres, but Aphogee has been my savior for the last 10 years. Not necessarily because it strengthens my hair from the inside like Olaplex and Epres would (I don't believe Aphogee can do that like Olaplex or Epres do), but because it was the only thing that kept my hair from being ruined by silk presses from the added protein on the outermost layer of my hair cuticle. I can't say what causes heat damage to happen, but since I can't straighten my hair myself, it's been a big help against whatever the root issue is. But I made a mistake and missed a treatment this one time 2-3 months ago and I, unfortunately, got heat damage. What I would do is maybe a week or two before my appointment, I'd do the Aphogee two step. But the heat damage is why I've tried Olaplex and Epres in the first place, and may move to K18 after my Epres vials are done. I thought it would be a fun experience since it was the first time in a while that my hair had been so damaged, so it would be easier to see any results 🤣 I'm also with you that I have always preferred deep conditioners as a product (my current fav is Adwoa's baomint deep conditioner, but you kind of encourage me to try more in the future), regular conditioners never quite did it for me even back when I was first going natural and my regimen was much more simple, everything changed when I switched exclusively to deep conditioners. It's a bit more expensive, but because they're so concentrated they still last me quite a bit of time. And I also can't help but want to pre-poo with oil. The softness and the alleged benefits keep calling my name. Loved the video! I'm glad you had so many questions to ask and share with us

Brittany, hope all is well. Great video. Thank you for sharing. I love pre-pooing. When I stopped, my hair did not like it (LOL). My hair likes when I pre-poo. It assist with my detangling before I shampoo. Have you thought about adding K18 to your routine? K18 is pretty expensive and I have not tried it myself, although I am seriously thinking about it. My understanding is K18 is a leave in treatment/conditioner. I am still on the fence because of the price ($75) and I am not sure it is worth the price. I hope all is well with you 💜 When I have the means to do so, I’m going to incorporate it into my routine. Right now it’s going to be a few months before I implement it but 100% will use it. I think pre-Poing is an awesome ritual because it kind of forces you to do your hair once you’ve already committed to pre-pooing it lol even if you sleep in it overnight you have to wash it out of your hair. And hot oil treatments are wonderful for our hair so I’m probably going to try it out sometime in the future and see how my hydration reacts.

Hi Brittany! I love your relationship with your stylist, she is a gem! I learned so much through the questions you asked and the details she shared. I just wanted to ask questions for clarity: when you say you wash 2 times a week but it's day 6 hair, does the six days include the mid-week hair wash? If so, is the midweek wash like a refresh with adding more of the same product on top or is it a full wash? How long is it taking you to wash and style your hair for a full reset, midweek wash, Olaplex day? I am considering doing the conditioner wash midweek as your stylist, Breanna, suggested but wonder if it will be enough for me since I am still going through my stash of products that may have oils and butters in the first 5 ingredients. Will you switch to this routine as she suggested as needed as well or do you prefer the full shampoo still? Also, what are your thoughts on the no butters no oils trend or the 30-day detox now? As I go through my stash, there are gems that I'm finding that don't meet the standards for the no butters no oils trend or the 30-day detox as you said you experienced with oil treatments you used in the past. Also, do you find that, after using a gentle/detangling shampoo and then clarifying, your hair gets tangled again? I find my hair gets tangled at the root when messaging/scrubbing the scalp even when I hold my hair taught and I don't know how to avoid that. The only thing I can think of is to do it in reverse or add a third detangling shampoo with lots of slip. I may try shampooing small section by section, holding the hair section, and scrubbing as your stylist did in this session. I also find that even with highly rated products I can't detangle 100%; I always need the Aussie Moist Curls 3 Minute Miracle to assist the deep conditioner to thoroughly detangle but I am not sure how good the Aussie Moist Curls 3 Minute Miracle, the entire Aussie Moist Curls line, or original Aussie Moist line is for our hair or if it is interrupting my set or the condition of my hair. For clarifying and detangling shampoos which ones do you now highly recommend? Im going to continue cocktailing my conditioner with the deep conditioner to extend the longevity of my deep conditioner so it does not go to waste in trying to detangle 100% . What are your thoughts on the Denman brush you just purchased? Also, how did the Quidad Adanvanced Climate Control Regular Hold Gel hold up for you with this wash & go? Would you use this hold in the future or do you prefer to exclusively use the stronger hold? How did you like the K18 treatment overall?
@2010NursingStudent1
@2010NursingStudent1 Год назад
You have some good questions that I'm excited to get the answers to also😃
@BrittanyMia
@BrittanyMia Год назад
I did not midweek wash that week because I knew I was going to Breanna so that's why I went six days until my reset. I'm still experimenting with my midweek washes, but i'm leaning towards shampooing each wash because of scalp sensitivity and itchiness. When I cowash, my scalp still itches so I may as well have shampooed because the time saved doesn't matter if I still have an itchy scalp. It still takes me like 4-6 hours to do a reset, 3 hours for a midweek wash, and 4-6 hours for the OlaPlex wash day. I'm no longer bothered by the time it's taking because I spend at least 2 of those hours chillin outside the shower either deep conditioning or drying my hair. I can't stop deep conditioning it's just a prefered habit that helps my hydration. I'm an advocate for oils and butters. And my understanding of the 30 day detox is that it's fine after the 30 days of detoxing to incorporate products that have oils and butters in them in the first few ingredients so long as you are shampooing properly. So if you are using products with oil and butters in them, it may be better for you to shampoo instead of cowash. I've experienced that before, but going in right after clarifying with a deep conditioner is what I do because I don't want to over larify and conditioner helps with the tangles. And shampooing in smaller sections helps as well like Breanna was doing! And a good thing to understand is that our hair will never be 100% detangled. Like if we let it recoil for even a minute, we can brush out more "tangles". I don't use Aussie Moist, but I know people that do and love it. I can't really speak to the ingredients and effect on hair health. I love the OlaPlex NC4 for clarifying, and the trepadora hair rinse for a gentle shampoo! Also the Ouidad multi cleansing oil shampoo is a favorite of mine. Great Idea. I personally prefer the Felicia Leatherwood. I have to work really hard to myke to Denmans work but not the Felicia Leatherwood The regular hold held up well, but I still prefer the stronger hold. And I need to so the K18 consecutively before I can answer that but that's coming within the next few months!

I at least dry my hair for 20 minutes to 30 minutes before going to bed and by the next day my hair is for sure dry. I also had mid strand splits from having my hair most of the time. Now even before doing a bun. I put at least 8 twists or braids and sit under the dryer for the time I stated above, and then the next day I apply my styler (gel) without water), put on a scarf for 30 minutes and go. That way my scalp isn't moist. I use to have a moist scalp after taking out my 4 or 5 day bun. It was gross. No wonder I have scalp itching. I was constantly itching and getting bumps.

The issue could be that your hair doesn’t need it. Bond builders are for damaged hair from heat, coloring/bleaching, keratin treatments… so do you feel your hair needs it? Because if not, you might be doing more harm than good by using it.

@@CoilyCode I was trying it for the moisture retention that says it can achieve. I do two strand twists for the week and they barely make it through the whole seven days. I tried doing a wash n go but it starts to get crunchy by day three or four if I’m lucky. I changed how I apply my gel by using less water and I’ve noticed my twists look less dried out now, so maybe I need to wait it out before I try again, but hydration is my main concern

So she used the K18 on my hair when it was soaking wet. Similar to how I use OlaPlex, I never go in on dry hair, just because it never seemed as though those instructions were made for our hair. I don’t think she uses such a tiny amount either, but she doesn’t use a whole lot. I did not get a lot of how much she was using, but I know she takes a small amount and works it in per section and my hair with sectioned in a lot of twists during that time. At least 10 to 15 twists when I was in the shampoo bowl which is where she was applying the K18. And sidenote, I saw that you do twist outs. Whenever I see people do twist outs they typically do it on damp hair and not soaking wet hair so that may be the culprit. And remember that hydration happens during the shampoo and conditioning process. So as long as you’re doing that consistently you don’t have to worry about hydration.

How do you get build up if you wash your hair 2x a week? I wonder if clarifying more often would be beneficial. I know I’m about to start doing that

She mentioned below that she needs to start putting shampoo directly on the scalp before spreading it everywhere else.

How could she tell, that your scalp had build up? Did she see flakes, or could she feel product??

She could feel the product on my scalp. I’m good with washing my actual hair, but I need to start putting the shampoo directly on my scalp before emulsifying.

I don't understand the chokehold that oil has on some black women. Oil literally just sits on the the hair giving a lubricated feeling and blocks water from entering the hair. Jennifer rose is right alot of black women just don't like the feeling of their hair so they coat it. Not understanding that that's how their hair is supposed to feel. Black women with coarse surface textures have got to get to the place where they accept their texture there's nothing wrong with it 💖

There’s no chokehold sis, oil locks in moisture. Of course if you apply it to dry hair it will sit on top, you have to spritz a leave in conditioner or water first. Oil keeps the hair lubricated so that it doesn’t frizz up and break off. This is why going back to basics is important where older generation black mothers would grease the scalp 2 to 3 times a week and wash the hair once a month with a cleansing shampoo and deep condition, apply a oil moisturizer lotion and grease and braid the hair in Felicia plaits and go on about their business. I do this now and my hair is mid back length. I band my hair though as a protective style and wear hijabs this basic method is growing my hair. I use distilled water to spray my hair everyday, motions oil moisturizer lotion, and blue magic bergamot grease to lock in the conditioners. I still can apply a wrap mouse for replenish moisture a week later and go about my business. Back to basics is where it needs to be.
