A common homemade weed killer recipe consists of vinegar, salt, and dish soap. I test of the mixture on both grassy and broadleaf weeds to see how well it works. I would not recommend using this on weeds in the lawn. It is more applicable in areas where you no longer wish to grow plants. Check out the results in the video. Here is the 2 gallon sprayer used in the video. amzn.to/3sCymKE (affiliate link)

Hello, I use this method but use cleaning vinegar and more dish soap with salt. But for it to work best apply it to the weeds while weeds are in sun. So as sun first hits the weeds spray them covering every leaf and bloom. Sprayed some the other day and all are dead. in one treatment.

@metalicmario8106
@metalicmario8106 11 месяцев назад
Not enough salt. Salt is the key! Instead of 1 cup per gallon you need to use the whole container per gallon. The vinegar needs to be super saturated with salt. The vinegar being a mild acid, acts to break down the waxy (protective) coating found on plants. The salt then draws out the water from the plant. Soap really does help the salt stick to the plant. This is also best applied on a really hot day. With this ratio of salt I guarantee you would have killed ALL of those weeds. If enough is applied and it gets into the root systems nothing will grow back for a very long time. On a hot day you can spray in the morning or noon and by night the plant will already be wilted and dead.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR OFFERING A SAFER option to killing weeds. I quit allowing chemicals in my yard 3 decades ago because I did not want my dogs walking on poisoned grass/sidewalks and wallowing around in the grass as well. My dogs have been VERY long-lived (while the rate of cancer in dogs continues to go up and I know it has to partially due to all the yard chemicals they are exposed to) and my grass is just as green as all my chemically treated neighbors’ yards. Who needs a perfect weedless yard at the price of harming animals/wildlife/children? I am one of a very few in my n’hood who does not use chemicals in my yard for ANYTHING!

Love this recipe, use 10% acidity vinegar and ensure good coverage, it will work fine to keeps weeds at bay on a driveway. It will not keep new weeds from forming, seeds blow in all the time - without destroying the soil nothing will stop new weeds so regular, maybe every 2 weeks will work. On really big established weeds, get right in at the base too - watch out with metal sprayers or other metal like fences - vinegar and salt is a great environment for rust - thanks for the video

Cut the weed with a trimmer or shears then douse with the vinegar, salt and dish soap, then the circulation of the plant is opened up and it should take the dose down into the root. I tried this with some ivy. Looks dead so far. Once I'd destroyed the plant above ground, We've had a lot of rain and I've not seen it return. I did put a fair amount of salt in. I can't tell if it was the amount of salt or the vinegar! I also made a cup around a slit in the bark of some more using duct tape and filled that with salt. That one didn't like that either.

When you see plants or weeds flowering you're growing a new crop of weed seeds to sprout even next year. Especially dandelions. It's simple to take a small hand garden shovel press blade down about 9", loosen around the whole plant root, pop pry the whole root out. They will grow back if you don't remove the whole carrot like root. I do this a few times a year on larger sporadic weeds.. I don't have many anymore.

my ecologist friend (phd plant physiology, works for nature conservancy) told me that local spraying with defoliant is safer for the environment because the glycol etc breaks down, whereas the salt stays there and screws up the microfauna. also, this only usually kills the leaves not the roots, so stuff like poison ivy just comes back the next year.

I've used this for years with great results. Altho, I use the 30% Pickling Vinegar found in the pickling/home canning aisle of the grocery store. For those taller weeds just stick your wand down among the weeds almost touching the ground and spray the entire stems and leaves of the weeds close to the ground before making a pass over the top of the weeds. You do need to thoroughly wet the weeds with the mixture. This does last for a long time but is not a permanent solution to your weed problem. It's also much cheaper than toxic weed killers. It will also kill your tough vining plants as well, i.e. poison ivy, etc. I've even used it on invasive Trumpet vine.

Thanks for sharing this! I've used this method with success it just takes patience. You're killing the leaves and ultimately have to wear the plant out. Also one of your other commenters said, a simple black plastic can work as well. Especially if you want to plant there afterwards.

Yep, good way to do it in spring is to put out a good dose of water on your planting bed then black plastic or tarp it. Weed seeds germinate but die without sun. Heats up to pasteurize I guess you could say.

I use cup of domestos and fill the rest of my 5 litre sprayer on my pebble dashed front walls and it removes the green moss that starts growing up from the bottom of the walls and keeps them clean. Washing up liquid added clings the domestos mix to the stones. I apply this about 4 times a year so I apply it each season

I use this formula all the time, it works best if the area get several hours of direct sunlight. It kills the leaves almost 100% but it doesn’t kill the root so most will come back. I use 1/2 gallon of vinegar to 1 1/2 gallon of water same amount of salt and dish soap and usually only need one treatment only occasionally treat a second time.

THIS ACTUALLY WORKS. Part of my career has been as a professional landscaper and there are always some ridiculous tricks that people talk about. This actually works. Use it for driveway cracks, stepping stones, etc. and do not use ON lawns for example, unless you want to allow the juice to spread to immediate areas. You may have to reapply still, but this stuff is safe for the environment obviously. Anything but poisons.

So what happens to the SAR (Salt Absorbtion) ratio in the soil, adding the salt over time is basically sterilizing the soil so that only a few salt tolerant weeds will be able to grow long term. Goes into the water table and pollutes wells if used in large amounts. See Highways operations. deicing salt piles and community water supply fails. This was a biblical ethnic cleansing technique used to destroy an enemy's cropland. Pick your poison.

Can I plant anything at some point after applying this to an area next to my pool? Does it hurt the soil?
@kevindunlap5525
@kevindunlap5525 Год назад
@@rachelg7371 I can explain it this way; This year, there are weeds growing healthily in the cracks in my driveway. So absolutely yes. That's the good thing about it. You aren't going out there and scorching the earth. When I was in landscaping, I used to offer the poison spray for a couple of bucks here and there. I won't use that stuff for any reason today, and would absolutely have a sprayer full of soap, vinegar, and water on my truck. We should control these things not devastate the land! So here's the solid answer, like using a chlorine product on clothes: Spray a test patch. You'll be happy, and best of luck!

We had a Crape Myrtle growing in the corner of our house & porch, cut it down, it started sprouting up the next year, then I dug it up but left some roots, started sprouting up the next year. I dug a big hole all the way around & cut the roots, threw them in the burn pile then mixed a box of Rock Salt & gallon of water stirred until the salt dissolved then pored the mixture in the hole & covered up with dirt, it’s been four years, no more sprouting

I have a pound or so of rock salt that I'm going to dissolve in hot vinegar. I think its from an ice cream maker we had years ago. It's not food grade, so it just sits on the shelf. Good way to get rid of it. A few years ago, I had a patch of weeds on the side of the garage that were very stubborn to get rid of. So, I mixed a batch of Round Up, and instead of water, I used vinegar. The weeds turned black in a day and didn't come back for months. Lol, I called it The Valley of Death. I haven't done that since, because it's probably not a good idea to do a off label mix.
