This homemade lip balm is not too hard and not too soft; it’s the baby bear of lip balms! Perfect for a pot or tin, quick, easy, all natural, inexpensive, and most of all deeply nourishing! Customize it with your favorite oils to make your perfect balm.
Ingredients and Basic Ratio:
1 part beeswax
1 part solid coconut oil
1 part Shea butter (or cocoa or mango butter)
2 parts sunflower oil (or other liquid carrier oil)
A few drops of vitamin E oil
About 1% dilution** of peppermint essential oil (or other eo)
Now practically speaking, you’ll want to scale this recipe for the container(s) you have. The ones I bought are 10ml or about 2 tsp. So let’s just say you want to make ONE 10ml container of lip balm. Here’s how it breaks down.
2g beeswax
2g solid coconut oil
2g shea butter
4g sunflower oil
1 drop vitamin E oil
2 drops peppermint essential oil
From here you can easily just multiply these quantities for the amount of product you wish to make. (Say for a wonderful gift idea!)
Tools:
Small heatproof bowl and saucepan
spatula or spoon
a small container, pot, or tin
a small kitchen scale (kinda optional)
Instructions:
1. Place beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, and sunflower oil in a double boiler or a heatproof bowl on top of a saucepan of simmering water. Stir gently until all are completely melted.
2. Remove from heat and stir in vitamin E oil and essential oil (if using).
3. Carefully (but quickly) pour the liquid oil mixture into lip balm containers and allow to sit until product has completely cooled. For faster results move the lip balm to the fridge after it’s cooled slightly. When the balm is completely cool, cap it and you’re good to go!
*Pro Tip: if your mixture begins to harden in the bowl before you have managed to fill all the little containers, simply set it back on the heat to remelt. It’s very forgiving.

Love your channel and learning a lot from you. How do you store extra lip balm that you make? Can it be stored safely in the freezer or frig?

Thank you! That truly makes me smile! I often end up with extras especially when I am working on a new recipe. I give away a lot as gifts or “testers” to friends. But the ones I keep, I usually just store in my cabinet since I figure I will use them within the year. But you could definitely store them in the fridge if you have room and want to extend their shelf life even further. (I’ve never kept them in the freezer, so I can’t say for sure about that. I wonder if the extreme temperature might not be so good for some ingredients or essential oils- but I am honestly not sure.)

Thanks for the recipe! :) Could you please share how long the balm lasts on the lips?

Good question! I just tried it out to see, and I would say I could still feel the sort of glossy feeling for maybe an hour and a half to two hours or so. (Then I had to eat some ice cream 😂 so it got wiped off.) So, I would say several hours. After that my lips still feel moisturized, but I don’t “feel” the glossy/balmy texture anymore. If that makes any sense, lol.

You are sweet. Thank you. Most essential oils are not allowed to be used in lip products in EU. I do not know with what to replace it

Thanks! Hmmm, well you could leave it out completely, of course. Or perhaps you could infuse a liquid carrier oil with dried herbs, say peppermint in this case. Then you would use your infused peppermint oil in your lip balm in place of the sunflower oil. (There are lots of videos about how to infuse oils, but I think you've just inspired me to make one of my own soon!)

@Sadnessis MYLife that would only be an issue is you were going to sell the lip balm. My guess would be that the ones that are banned are essential oils that are phototoxic (that react with sunlight like a citrus oil for example, and many others). Just stick with what you can use - you soft hand to have a whole bunch of flavors, even if you are selling. Hope this helps.
