Time for another reoccurring, randomly allocated, RUSH Wednesday! You asked, we listened! Such a great prog banger, have a great day guys what’s the next Rush track we gotta sample on the channel?!?! 🔥🤟🏻
Andy & Alex The Necromancer. It’s 2112, but it’s the album before 2112 (Caress of Steel), so they don’t quite have the ‘formula’ down yet. But it’s a total banger. You can thank me afterwards 🙂
A&A - This was really good. Agree. "The most endangered species - The honest man". I believe that is the core. I'll take whatever Rush is offered up by community. Great Wednesday reaction! Great day to you. :)
The most recent song (in their catalog) you've listened to is Subdivisions, I think, right? That's 1982. You gotta move into the later catalog. They made music for 40 years. I mean, I know the early classic stuff is great, I love it too. But you gotta get the fuller picture of their career. Something from a more recent Rush album? It's really interesting for comparison to the older, classic stuff. Something from Snakes and Arrows or Clockwork Angels? Far Cry? The Anarchist?
FePyroMaiden yes indeed Andy and Alex, I believe you haven’t reacted to a live track from Rush yet, Jacob’s Ladder is definitely one that comes highly recommended from a lot of fans, R40 version is fantastic as well as from Exit Stage Left.
Another thing I appreciate about “Witch Hunt” is that it is so incredibly atmospheric, and totally fitting with the lyrics. Almost scary to listen to. Very well done.
I've had lots of favorite Rush songs over the year, but I always come back to Natural Science when someone asks me which my absolute favorite is. It's fucking perfect.
What amazes me about Alex Lifeson is that in each Rush song he has a solo and each one is unique. He doesn't just shred for shredding's sake like a lot of other guitarists... He's just masterful...
Same album as Spirit of Radio. SoR is the opening track on Permanent Waves, Natural Science closes the album out. Everything in between is gold as well.
A freaking masterclass on so many levels. The lyrics are always incredible and I love Ged’s vocals. Alex’s solos are just killer; pure sauce. The more you listen to it the better it gets. And what is more timely and important in the age of you know who “The most endangered species The honest man Will still survive annihilation Forming a world State of integrity Sensitive, open and strong”. 🔥
If you're doing prog, you'll get around to classic Yes... Starship Troopers, And You and I, Roundabout, I've Seen All Good People are all good places to start.
Forgot you did roundabout in your first drink reaction... the others are still good for next. 80's pop yes is a much different thing and not my cup of tea feiw.
@@gotomymostpopularvideo3235 A number of Yes's early songs are indeed good, but my favorite HAS to be Close To The Edge, beyond a doubt. To make one song that takes up a whole album side was, at the time, unheard of. Close To The Edge isn't so much a song as it is a journey
There's so much good Rush stuff it's amazing. You definitely should do cygnus X-1 from their Kings album. Then do side one of hemispheres cygnus X-1 book 2
Yes, they must do that one. It's more than just a guitar solo, though. The song is really uplifting and the lyrics are delightfully cynical. And the backing vocals are some of the best on any Dan song.
Great song. I remember first hearing it when I was a kid, in the back seat of my dad's car. Then I saw a rerun of American Bandstand with that a few weeks later. Been a SD fan since.
They're not ready. You don't want to get your feelings hurt on that one. I agree. But there's a reason it tanked and why the band wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole afterwards. Caress of Steel, especially for these guys, should be the last record.
@@KawaTony1964 I think that'd go down pretty well. It's catchy enough and historically based. Newer RUSH fans are super delicate as I know you know. One wrong turn, unless they're prog minded can tank the whole thing.
Yes! I agree! Please make sure you get the full version too. I know there's an edited version that chops out one of the solos. I see people suggesting The Necromancer too. I feel both are in the same D&D style of epic Accenture story prog, which they do so well. Either way, y'all will love them!
Gotta be as missed as any great song ever. Right in the middle of what could be Rush's greatest album, just a slightly different style, and got hugely missed. Not only a great, great song, but a new genre that just went over most heads.
Try doing some Emerson Lake and Palmer Carl Palmer is my favorite drummer he's my idol king of the one-handed drumroll but they are progressive rock not sure if you'll take them or not but they got some good stuff especially their progressive twists and classical Music
Instead of looking for the sauce.....perhaps focus on the totality. Rush songs are not to be taken out of context. I think as you become more seasoned listeners, you'll see that.
@Greg Esquibel For sure I see what you’re saying, but I was focusing on the totality and still felt that way, it wasn’t that the song was too long or anything, for example I loved every single second of “2112”, I didn’t get that feeling at any point during that video, what just certain sections of this one in particular, still a fantastic track! 😁
Rush is like fine wine. It takes time to appreciate. It can't be sold before it's time. It won't be the last time you find aspects of a song that seem odd but remember you are studying the masters. Go to the lyrics of the song the music is thematically linked to the words . When you do this your nascent discriminating tastes will bear out the purpose. For example : "Computerized clinics For superior synics They dance to a synthetic band" Is sung as the music synthetically and unnaturally transitions. Its disconcerting and its supposed to be. Anyway... love to see the evolution of young Rush fans. They've been with me since I was 8. I still cant get enough.
I was just getting into Rush back in the early 80s when I heard this song for the first time. I knew then that I was hooked for a lifetime. This is an amazing album. You must listen to Something for Nothing from the 2112 album. A rocker dudes.
I would like you two to respond to “Subdivisions” off of Rush’s 1982 “Signals” album. Not merely because I happened to grow up in the same part of TO that at least 2/3 of Rush did but, because I believe that they pack enough hooks into that one song that some lesser band would have used for an entire album.
@@2cawwa2 Absolutely! Too many to choose from ! 'Sunrise' and 'Come Away Melinda' and, well, the whole Demons and Wizards album to start with. A&A would have to add another day of posting to cover the awesomeness of The Heep !!
I believe the warble effect you mentioned was meant to simulate a jump into hyperspace. The song lyrics are divided into three sections: I Tidal pools II Hyperspace III Permanent Waves In the Hyperspace section the lyrics begin with "A quantum leap forward In time and in space The universe learned to expand" The timing shifts from standard 4/4 time to 7/8 time after the warble effect, and the music is reflective of the journey through hyperspace. Great reaction video, guys!
You guys need to do a Neal Peart drum solo. This is a Rush staple. The one I recommend has a weird title because it mentions YYZ at Rush in Rio. If you haven't watched YYZ Live in Rio, that's a must watch. There is a reason that crowd is so amped...1st, people in Rio are huge fans...2nd, they had just witnessed the drum solo. If you search RU-vid for "RUSH in Río - Leave That Thing Alone and YYZ", you'll find it. Please do a reaction to the another cool instrumental & a drum solo sometime. Trust me, you'll love it.
I was 15 years old when Moving Pictures came out WOW. I was blown away. I would go through my older brother ‘a record collection. This is when I came across their earlier music. Incredible musicians! Rush is in a category by themselves. I am a fan for life. I am enjoying all of these reactions of younger people that are hearing Rush for the first time. R.I.P Neil the greatest drummer ever. There music will live on.
You really should do Limelight.Very emotional guitar solo that matches perfectly what the song is saying. Ironically the success of the Moving Pictures album made this song's message even stronger for what Neil was feeling at the time.
Limelight was not an opener or an encore for Rush's tours in the 80s (at least). Usually, it was played at the end of shows, (incl shows I went to), and 2112, YYZ, Xanadu, and La Villa Strangiato were encore songs. Still one of my favorite straight melody Rush songs. Rush didn't even play Limelight at all for the Grace Under Pressure tour.
@@geol1936 Thanks for the info....only been to two Rush concerts....I just meant the song is so good I think that it would be great as an opener or a closer. Not meant to give false info how I said it......again thanks.
@@andrewgarin2486 It's all good. I'm into setlists of bands and why they arrange like they do. Rush kept to a pretty close assemblage of songs for most tours. That is why, for some unknown reason, they didn't play limelight for the GUP tour. Limelight trails YYZ and Tom Sawyer as all time most played songs off of Moving Pictures.
@@andrewgarin2486 This link setlist.fm, lets you look at specific tours, specific albums, specific songs. It is very interesting. www.setlist.fm/stats/songs/rush-13d6dd1d.html?song=2112+Part+I:+Overture
One of my favorite Rush songs. The transitions of this song is amazing Love the fast fill in by Neil in the end, and the back beats. RIP Neil "The Professor" Peart.
Terry Brown who was their producer at this time said that Rush had a way of using odd time signatures at will, and being able to draw a line straight through it.
At 3:28... Alex hits the notes, and then he slides up one note, and then hits an "A" on the third string. THEN... he switches strings. First a "D" string, then the "A" string... then the "E" string. Then switches back and forth. Dayum.
Andy/Alex-I have been listening to that song for over 40 years and my favorite part has always been the hyperspace transition where it sounds like they are going into wharp speed. Love Geddy’s vocals in the beginning too. I have you to do a deep cut review of Kid Gloves off 1984 album GUP. 🤘
I've seen some others mention this, you definitely need to do some Steely Dan! Peg, Midnight Cruiser, Don't Take Me Alive, Kid Charlemagne, My Old School....
Thanks guys...glad you liked it. I think you guys would love "Animate" it rocks guitar, bass, and drums and I prefer a live version like "RUSH - Animate Live Frankfurt" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zG_Rxq6vEqY.html RUSH has always been the best live.
Dunno if this has been brought up yet: The first section of this song was recorded with Geddy and Alex, amplifiers and all, set up outside the studio in Ontario over a big-ass lake. The echos are natural, y'unnerstand, like no studio reverb added, just the guitar and vocals echoing across the lake.
I guess you can't force it. I "hated" Geddy's voice from age 7 to 12... such a strong word, but when you're a kid.. ;) At that point, age 12, I had been exposed to Dream Theater (at age 11), and I really "got" it finally.. I got Geddy's voice, it clicked with me, because of the totality of it all. I then viewed his voice as "one of the instruments" - not just a way to convey lyrics. I would also say that his voice has definitely mellowed with the years, I think his voice in the later years was at its best. But, for 70s purists, they probably really prefer the banshee voice. I mean, I personally love all of his vocal phases. How many songs have you listened to? And have you checked lyrics videos?
@@murraypft Again, fully understand it since I was once there. It IS possible you might never appreciate it, but still you shouldn't feel that you have to. If it happens that you grow to like it, it will most likely come about by some natural process, not something you force yourself to. If not, you can at least enjoy their instrumentals. :D
Natural Science ends the album "Permanent Waves" and The Spirit of Radio begins it!! Two of Rush's best songs bookends this 1980. Yes, they can play the song EXACTLY like this in concert. "Permanent Waves" was released in between their other 2 best albums, "Hemispheres" and "Moving Pictures!" Watch a live version of this song!!!
At its finest, indeed.. SUBSCRIBED... the transitions were actually perfect and totally in step. The LYRICS will blow both of your minds... "science like nature must also be tamed, And it will surely serve us well."
