Tom Sawyer is the worst song on Moving Pictures, the rest of the album freaking incredible. Don't get me wrong, Tom Sawyer is a great song in its own right, but it is the Rush song for people who aren't Rush fans. "The Camera Eye" is the real gem of Moving Pictures, followed by Red Barchetta and Limelight.

I hated this song when I was young. I just didn't get it when I heard it on the album but the older I get the more I love it. And having seen them do it live because I was lucky enough to see them on the Moving Pictures tour also helped me have a love for it that I never would have had otherwise. It's funny you mention picturing a country drive because that was the scene they picked for the footage in the background that was playing while they played the song. There may well have been some bands as good as RUSH, but there has never been anyone any better in my opinion

Red Barchetta is a song about an imagined future where gas-fueled cars are outlawed (Motor Law), so the "old machine", preserved for "fifty odd years", is taken out for a "weekly crime". Understanding cars isn't really necessary as much as just appreciating the power of a gas-fueled engine that cannot be duplicated by any other known technology. Also, regarding Getty's voice. He sings in this range because it's the only range of the audio spectrum where there's room for him in the guitar/bass/drums mix. This is why a lot of vocalists throughout the 80's began singing in such high ranges.

Not just gas fueled cars but "personal vehicles" are outlawed. Peart touches on the theme of individuality in so many of his songs. Personal freedom is a core tenant of his lyrical philosophy.

John Alves Sure, lets all just do whatever we all want. Nature be damned. Unfortunately, we’ll all be dead before our generation is called to task, not only for the damage we did, but for the fact that we could have stopped it, but did nothing. Why? Apparently cause we couldn’t be bothered to stop doing whatever the fuck we wanted. It’s also funny how you bitch about communism, yet your favorite president is going ass to mouth with the biggest endorser of communism in the world. To the point that he’s given them names of our secret agents & allowed them to ‘accidentally’ see Top Secret intelligence. How do you make that all work in your head? I’m really curious to know what mental gymnastics you must have to do so it all makes sense in your little world.

Many years ago, while on deployment, my wife sent me a care package which included some motorcycle magazines I was subscribed to. (Cycle, or Cycle World) There was an article in there where the author talked about listening to this song while riding the Ortega Highway (Hwy 74 from Lake Elsinore over the mountain to San Juan Capistrano). It just happened to be my favorite road to ride almost every weekend, and one of my favorite songs. I think it was Peter Egan if anyone cares to search, and probably Cycle World, mid 90's. Anyway, this is a great song for driving. The article was a great tribute to the song and that road.

What changed my listening life forever was back in 1975 when I went to a Uriah Heap concert in Duluth Minnesota and these three kids from Toronto opened for them. Had never heard of Rush before and this was just before the release of 2112 and remember them playing songs from the pre-release. Next day after the concert, I went to the local record store and bought every album that they had out at the time. Rush, Fly By Night, and Caress of Steel. Never looked back since.

👍 👍 For those who like to read... The following is from wiki. "The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", written by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road and Track magazine. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive Modern Safety Vehicles (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour (80 km/h) impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some.[1] Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart made several attempts to contact Foster during the recording of Moving Pictures, but Road and Track did not have an up-to-date address, and Rush were forced to settle for a brief "inspired by" note in the lyric sheet mentioning the story. In July 2007, Foster and Peart finally made contact with one another. Foster later posted on his website an account of their journey by motorcycle through the backwoods of West Virginia between stops on Rush's 2007 Snakes & Arrows Tour. A sporty red two-seat convertible facing right at a mild three-quarter orientation to the viewer, parked in front of a light brown wall "A brilliant red Barchetta from a better, vanished time ..." Barchetta, literally "small boat" in Italian, is the diminutive form of barca ("boat" or "craft"). In the automotive industry, the term is used for a two-seat car without any kind of roof. The proper Italian pronunciation is Italian pronunciation: [barˈketta], although it is sung with /tʃ/ by Geddy Lee. [2] Neil Peart's favorite car is the 1948 Ferrari 166MM ″Barchetta″. [3] Lyrics The song's lyrics tell a story set in a future in which many classes of vehicles have been prohibited by "the Motor Law". The narrator's uncle has kept one of these now-illegal vehicles (the titular red Barchetta sports car) in pristine condition for some "fifty-odd years" and keeps it hidden at his secret country home (previously a farm before the enactment of the aforementioned Motor Law). Every Sunday, the narrator sneaks out to this location and goes for a drive in the countryside, which he describes as "his weekly crime". During one such drive, he encounters a "gleaming alloy air car" that begins to chase him along the roads. A second such vehicle soon joins the pursuit, which continues until the narrator drives across a one-lane bridge that is too narrow for the air cars. The song ends with the narrator returning safely to his uncle's farm."

One of the most succinct explanations of rush ever. They make complicated music sound simple and digestible. That’s exactly it. They don’t want to labor your brain, they do the work for you. All great explanations. That’s because they’re generous and kind Canadians, who don’t want to out you out. So they do all the work, scrub the floors, and all you have to do is sit back and marvel at their craft. I was lucky enough to be into them in 1976 and to see them close to 40 times. There will never be another band where all three musicians are virtuosos like they were.

Rush is one of those bands that you can't ask someone to judge based on one song. Back in the day (the 70s), we'd buy an album and listen to the whole thing. I've been a high school teacher for 26 years. It is pretty much one "song" at a time for our youth. I'll play things like this almost like "bumper" music in class....right before the bell, or as the kids are coming in for the next class. Of course, since my musical tastes go from Louis Armstrong to Hank Williams, Jr. to Slipknot, the kids don't have a clue what to expect. That being said, I have over 450 quotes hanging on the walls of my classroom. Only one of the quotes is from the lyrics of a song. "Something for Nothing." I think the chorus of the song is a message that kids need to think about.

The song is about rebellion against a dystopian society which forces conformity. The vehicle (Red Barchetta) is only there to exemplify Neil’s individualistic strive for freedom from normality. Neil was obsessed with Free Will and philosophy in general. Neil had Jesse Panniers on his BMW because they were the largest aftermarket you can buy. Neil would buy ten books at a time and the regular sized panniers did not allow for such indulgence. There is no person I enjoyed more in an interview. His command of the English language, thought processes and rules for life and living remind me of another Canadian known as Jordan Peterson. In my mind both are professors. RIP Neil Peart, songwriter, drummer, poet, philosopher, author, traveler, and all around renaissance man. “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice!”

When “Moving Pictures “ was released, I was working on my first car, a ‘69 Mach I…yes with my uncle because my dad hated the car said I would get killed in it because it was so fast. So this song just captured my feelings and fantasies about this car, as well as the special relationship I had with my uncle. So yeah, the song would be relatable to someone who liked to dream about their awesome car and all of the possibilities…the dreamy ending just really did it for me. Plus the fact I was 16 made it very special and this song…and my first car and my uncle…will forever have a unique place my heart.

Michael Rice When I bought this album many years ago(on vinyl of course) I only listened to the first side. I never bothered w/ the second side. What an idiot. Years later, when my vinyl copy was so worn out and scratched up, I bought the CD. Only then did I listen to the whole thing and loved it (of course again). All the wasted years. ; )

Love how you guys hang on and listen to every single last note, there are subtle amazing things in the fade out of this one and you caught them all! Great reaction to a timeless classic for sure. This album was one of the perfect rock albums ever made I feel, everything about Rush that is great came to being on this album and it was their best produced album as well! Every tone is amazing. Same album, longer song with many moods but the most incredible orchestration of rock I have ever heard is "The Camera Eye". You guys would flip trust me! And the guitar solo at the end is one of the most ridiculously composed solos ever written, pure genius and mastery. Hope you guys react to The Camera Eye sometime soon! Not commercial, but a prog/rock/epic masterpiece.

Nice work guys!! You've been picking some pretty awesome songs this week! Red Barchetta is a true classic. Always brings back fond memories of my adolescence, but never so much as to ruin the song in the moment. Rush and The Who were the two bands who most made me want to learn guitar and start a band. Been playing for 35 years now, lol. If you do play, getting this song right is an incredible achievement for any trio. Geddy's bass timbre is insane. This may be my all time favorite Alex lead, shortish but so *incredibly* melodic. Neil... well has he ever had even one boring moment? FWIW, this has my favorite bass fill ever on it. It's the fourth one during the fade out, under Alex's beautiful natural harmonics. It's a triplet of F#'s, then a triplet of: F#, F#, G... the way he reaches for that G, it just rings so beautifully, and the chorus sweeps perfectly as the note is resolving. It's so incredibly *hopeful*. I'm always waiting the whole song for those perfect six notes! Keep up the great work guys!!

You hit the nail on the head at the end ... everyone always talks about how great of a guitarist Alex is and how great of a bassist Geddy is. But honestly, and this album is full of this, what makes them great is how they construct the guitar melody and the bass counter melody during the instrumental sections of the song. The counter melody bass work in this song, and Limelight too, is just second to none. It's the two parts together that really, really make their sound ... with Neil's great drumming too of course.

Rush was transitioning from a prog band to a more conventional sound during this time. Moving Pictures represents some of their best songs in terms of writing and tight musicianship imho. Of course, their prog masterpieces are in a class by themselves.

Awesome as always! I love this song! It's a 10 for me because of the storytelling. All Rush songs have something to say but this for them is just a story. Most of their songs are very cerebral and have lots of meaningful gems in them, they make you think. This one was just sit back and let us tell you a story.
