After a quick stopover at Bakersfield Municipal Airport (L45) we departed over the Grapevine on our way to Santa Ana John Wayne Airport (KSNA). Navigating LA airspace could be a challenge - but being well prepared pays off! That said, no matter how well prepared I thought I was, my pattern entry got away from me, resulting in a go-around. No problem - one quick right pattern later, we landed on 20R at John Wayne Airport.

Had a similar experience flying to Van Nuys out of the valley: started my descent a little too late and I had to request a right 360 to lose altitude before landing on 16 R. It was fun!

Excellent Video!!! Loved it. Love the editing. Love the lessons learned at the end. I would liked to have seen the flight path and altitudes on the screen from Foreflight as you were describing the flight beforehand. EXCELLENT VIDEO !!!! Can't wait to watch more of your adventures.

For sure. Go-around is a pretty easy decision for me, especially in this case - unfamiliar airport, unfamiliar airspace. Besides - I don’t think I’ve ever been so out of whack on my pattern before.

As I start doing longer flights from Northern California as a new pilot it really helps to watch your videos. By the way, the Foreflight map option of "U.S. VFR Flyways" makes waypoints jump out on the map vs. using standard VFR chart display I found it hard to find Miles Park Square (giant golf course, why don't they say so?!) I think I'm going to preload waypoints on the ground before going into complex airspace and then later I have the GPS option of "Go To>Recent". Your videos give me an idea of what to expect....Really helpful. Just a small thing like not being to find a waypoint scares me, but now I know the best last option, is to fess up and say "Unfamiliar". Very cool. Thank you!

Thanks for that Peter. You’re totally right - I just checked the VFR Flyways option in ForeFlight and it makes the VFR Reporting Points stand out much better! That’s a great tip!

Fantastic go-around and landing! I'm not a pilot, but I vicariously try to be watching tons of videos. 🙂 Having landed at SNA in commercial aircraft before, I know that they have some interesting restrictions around there, but I was even wondering if you were going to do a dive-bomb landing on the first attempt. Very entertaining, and many blessings to you!

I just landed at KSNA on Thursday -- departing tomorrow back to KLVK. Love that you're still uploading videos too!

Our trip back was nonstop. Bring snacks and don’t drink anything until 30 minutes before you land back in Livermore and you’ll be all right. Unless, that is, Harris Ranch calls! Have a great flight.

@@mtyukin My flight down was nonstop as well -- haven't landed at Harris Ranch yet although I know the place well from when I used to drive down to LA... I'll need to factor that pit stop into my planning in the future!! Also a stop into Bakersfield since my Aunt lives there. Would be fun to pay her a visit. :-) I'll have my flight vlog up in another week or so, I flew a similar route inbound into KSNA ... lots of coastal marine layer this weekend so I'll probably be flying the same route back.
