In this video I will demonstrate the necessary steps to successfully execute a max performance takeoff whilst complying with noise abatement procedures at KSNA Orange County airport. This airports short runway combined with nose abatement takeoff profile can be a very exciting takeoff both for passengers and pilots. Known as the rocket ship takeoff by passengers, I will break down in detail what the flight crew must accomplish to depart this airport safely and without fines.

These procedures crack me up, they are all based on how strong the community board is at that location. For instance a good strong community board will complain about noise abatement, while a poor community board will have full power takeoffs and nobody will care about the noise. It is intriguing to actually look at the places they have these and the places that don't and should. Thanks for this video , awesome as usual .👍

Haha yeah I’m pretty sure the community board in Orange County is pretty strong tho!

I think there is a bunch of elderly community's, that could be why.

@@V1Simnope! During Santa Ana winds when the airport operates in reverse, the noise abatement procedure does not apply. Makes you wonder.

Awesome, loved learning this procedure. I'm ready to try it out in my sim, just gotta land in SNA without breaking the gear or running off the runway first

I go to school and work very close to KSNA and always get distracted by the aircraft blasting out of there or coming in on the OHSEA2 STAR. I knew about the short runway length but never knew about the strict noise abatement procedure. Seeing all of those 737s and A320s climbing out at (what looks like) 25 degrees makes a lot more sense now haha!

I worked OPS for 20 yesrs at this field...........takeoffs are usually Captains only. I could get an extra 10 pax on using runway 01 if the wind was good. Sent one 757 out at 220,000 lbs or so, was pretty much max. There are 4 tall palm trees on the golf course that were in our second stage climb we had to account for. Don't know if they are still a factor. Delta used to go weightless in first class on the 757's back in the day. AA was in trouble for a while on noise MD-80, so they were cutting back at 700ft for a while in the 80's. Semi-dangerous stuff but whatever worked. Nobody got killed with all the noise stuff, but it was a little dicy............

Thank you for another good video V1! I remember you were always saying before putting engines in climb thrust you want to wait for positive trend in airspeed. For this procedures(especially with mics on the ground) you don't need to be focused on this, just put them on climb on correct altitude?
@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 года назад
Yep! This is one of those instances where you just come straight back to climb, if done properly you actually won’t begin to accelerate because we manually set acceleration @3060’ and we are aiming to climb out V2+10

Where can we find the information for the airport noise abatement in other airports if they have any and how do we know what flaps to use for what speeds and climb outs?

What do you set the E/O acceleration height to? I have flown out of KSNA often as I live nearby there and the takeoffs I have experienced in Boeing’s are much more dramatic. Even captain makes an announcement beforehand. The engine spools up much more than 50% statically with the plane shaking then the plane lurches forward when brakes are released, then a very steep climb out followed by a pretty significant reduction in pitch. Then a quite dramatic feeling as is the reduction in power to what seems like near 50% thrust based on sound followed by a pretty significant increase in thrust as the plane crosses over the ocean, probably that 3,060’ point. This is on a 737 mostly and I think a 757 flight to KORD the first time I experienced this. What a blast. The Airbuses I have been on here seem quite benign in this regard.
@BryanSnider
@BryanSnider 2 года назад
I agree. It isn't as noticeable. The 737 is fun. For the 737 you program the FMC and select CLB-2 on the N1 Limit page. You also set 1000AGL THR reduction on the TAKEOFF REF page 2/2.. Takeoff procedure usually is flaps 5 TOGA and packs on unless required. Then climb at V2+20 TOGA power to 1000 AGL. At 400 AGL select LNAV or HDG and verify. 1000Ft pull thrust back to CLB...which in this case would be CLB-2 . Maintain V2+20 (TO/GA pitch). Then at 3000AGL set flaps up maneuvering speed. At this point you are pretty much near the coast or your SIDs first WP off the coast. At this point you delete the CLB-2 on the N1 Limit and resume normal climb.

Great video, could you elaborate what would be weight limit that you start thinking about APU on or packs off for take off? I was practicing TOGA flap3 at KEYW (very short runway)
@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 года назад
Hard to say, for example KEYW is so short your going to be weight restricted from the beginning. Thus depending on your load and new MTOW packs off will vary. However most takeoffs from there will be packs off flaps 3. IRL we wait for our takeoff performance to come in from ACARS and that’s where it tells us PACKS on or off
@voytekcyvr1936
@voytekcyvr1936 3 года назад
@@V1Sim Many thanks, yeah I do nor remember what was my weight, but packs were on and no APU, but if I had to stop at or close to V1 I would be EMAS story.

Does this also apply for reverse operations? Like departing and landing to the east?
@jdolaktv
@jdolaktv 2 года назад
It does not. Noise abatement is only for westbound departures over the Huntington Beach area. Eastbound can take off as normal.

Is there a danger for the plane to stall when you go from flap 3 straight to flap 1?

Can this be accomplished at this airport with a max load? Or is there typically an expected light load because of the small airport?
@V1Sim
@V1Sim 3 года назад
Depending on the aircraft, it is possible to be “weight restricted” however most 320/319s will be ok. Depends on a lot of other factors such as fuel, pax, cargo, environmental etc

John wayne is my home airport. Before push back the pilot always gives an announcement to passengers regarding the procedure. Not sure if this is the same at all airports with noise abatement. Very fun on take off its like a mild roller coaster launch haha
