In this video, Professor Paul Blaschko from the University of Notre Dame presents an in-depth analysis of the philosophical perspectives outlined in Kieran Setiya's book "Midlife."
Professor Blaschko sheds light on the concept of midlife crises and life crises in general, taking us on a philosophical journey into understanding these periods of upheaval. He critically examines how experiencing such crises can profoundly alter our self-perception and worldview.
The discussion delves deeper as Blaschko argues that reflecting on these crises provides invaluable self-knowledge. By exploring our attitudes-our beliefs, desires, and judgments-we can harness these insights for personal growth and the pursuit of a better, more fulfilling life.
This video is a must-watch for anyone navigating the challenges of midlife, those interested in philosophy or psychology, or individuals seeking to derive meaning from their life experiences. It provides a compelling argument for using philosophical reflection as a tool for understanding and overcoming personal crises.

This was really interesting. I'm considering going back to university at 38 to do ameliorative work as a physiotherapist. My background is in media & advertising which honestly has never aligned with my values. The point about shifting oneself into burn out was thought provoking to say the least. It seems this telec activity (which upon reflection I'm quite the fan of) doesn't Foster happiness. So what does the contemplative life mean in the modern era?

Great question @jenniferdoohan, and thanks for the thoughtful comment. I'm going to point you to two other videos I've done on the topic of contemplation (and how we should understand it today). One, related to this video, is about achievement and burnout and presents the philosopher Byung Chul Han's take on what contemplation might look like in today's world: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tF_DSdWSA6k.html

The other is a more general overview of what philosophers mean when they talk about "action vs. contemplation" and can provide some more context: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GgpltBqNqq0.html

There are some more resources you might find helpful on my course website: workinglife.nd.edu/course-calendar/ -- and here's one final recommendation (from The Marginalian -- a great weekly-ish newsletter): www.themarginalian.org/2015/08/10/leisure-the-basis-of-culture-josef-pieper/
