If you’re an Electrician’s Mate, you control the power. It’s your duty to keep the electrical systems and equipment on our ships maintained and operating efficiently to prevent power failure. Install, test and repair electrical equipment and appliances in every part of the ship. With technical training under your belt, you can also qualify for civilian electrician jobs after your time in the Navy. It takes a ton of energy to power our defenses-as an EM, that’s your responsibility. Learn more at bit.ly/2ONeLnm.

My dad was an EM back in the early 70s. It was nice to watch a video about his rate, though I'm sure many things have changed since then.

EM3 here, EM was literally the only rate they had available for me at the time and I feel like it was fate. Out of all the engineering rates we have it the easiest for the most part.

@@kuchnasty7112 mostly because we don't sit in the main engine spaces all day like the GS rates where its over 100 degrees. On deployments we're chilling all day unless something breaks or you're on watch. If you're tool issue qualified you're really chilling, sitting in tool issue room checking out tools to people on the ship. Meanwhile you're watching TV or playing video games. You'll have a lotta free time working on quals when you're not on watch or if a casualty happens.

Kuch Nasty If you enjoy learning, the EM rate is a good choice. I served on a large battleship so there were many different types of equipment to work on. I got to go in just about every space, many of which were restricted to most other sailors. Study HARD in “A” school so you can get an automatic promotion. First, just FOCUS on graduating from Boot Camp. Some recruits do not make it for various reasons-some they can control and some they cannot control. Remember this phrase, “Attention To Detail”. FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS

Hi! Thanks for reaching out. To answer your question; after graduating bootcamp a Sailor will then be given the opportunity to go to a secondary qualifying school to aid in their next steps of acquiring a rate. Let us know if you have additional questions!
