This sounds fake, but is true... The Sacramento Kings are the oldest franchise in the NBA. They joined the league in 1948 so they've been in the NBA for less time than teams like the Celtics, Knicks, Sixers, and Warriors, but they were founded before all of those teams. The Kings were founded in Rochester in 1923, 23 years before the NBA and any of the original teams.

As someone who really enjoys the history of sports, the NBA's erasure of their own franchises' pre-NBA history is frustrating to me. Especially when the NBA was at the time considered a merger between the BAA and NBL (retroactively, the NBA decided to view this more like the BAA became the NBA and some NBL teams just jumped ship), the NBL was arguably more talented, and several NBA teams originated/played in it (Kings, Pistons, 76ers, Hawks, and the Lakers).

The Athletics in baseball have a similar story. They are over 120 years old. And they won many championships in Philadelphia before they ended up moving. But everyone always kind of thinks of the A's as just always being in Oakland. But they also existed in Kansas City before moving to oakland. They've been around forever. You could also look at the Cardinals in football. They started off in Chicago, they were in St. Louis, before they finally ended up in Phoenix. They're even older than the Packers

The fact that 7 of top 13 in dunks are active and the other 6 lays played within the past 5 or so years suggest something about the game changed. I’m fairly certain it has to with the fact before 2004 that a defensive player could camp around the hoop so it was harder to dunk before that.

I was thinking that it’s because dunks weren’t recorded on the box score until recently. I couldn’t find any info about that online, but I would bet players like Kareem or Wilt would have a lot more dunks than people on the list.

@@yousifa7354 You're right, 'officially' the stat began to be recorded in 1996 missing 3 or so years of Shaq (there were dunk stats before that because I bought basketball cards with dunk stats in early 90's). But even then, the players are still more modern. Shaq is the only player who started playing before 2003ish on that list. So if they start only counting in 1996 there are then three other factors: 1. As I mentioned there was a rule change but it was in 2001-02 season. It was a defensive 3 second rule which means no more shot blocker camping near the hooop 2. The scoring is so much easier now. The 3pt shot has opened up the court and it's much easier to get an open dunk especially when there isn't a shot blocker camped near the hoop 3. The pace of the game is faster so more opportunities.

He wouldn’t. The games changed so much. That’s why 7 of the top 13 are still active and the other 6 last played within the past 6 years. One rule change is the defensive 3 second rule 20 years ago. Before that, defensive shit blockers often camped around the hoop so dunks were harder.

Here's a strange but true fact: From 1980 until 2010 only 8 different NBA teams won the title(Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Pistons, Rockets, Sixers, Heat, Spurs). Spread this out to today, (Warriors, Mavs, Bucks, Cavs, Raptors) and only 13 different teams have won in 43 seasons. By contrast, there have been 17 different Stanley Cup champions in that same time period and this included back to back Dynasties in the early 80's(NY & Edmonton) and a lost season('04-'05). From 1990-1999 and not counting the teams that won in the 80's 6 different teams won the Cup not to mention that only 1 team seeded 5-8 has ever won the title and only 2 have even made the finals. Meanwhile in the NHL the Cup winner can be any seed and that the chances are that the #1 seeded team is going to get knocked out(only 8 out of 37 President's Trophy winners have gone on to win the Cup).

Depends how you look at it. The 2000s in labeled as being so great because of all the 50 win teams. But everyone ignores they played against more sub 20 win teams than the history of the league combined. We'll definitely see this again in the next few years when they expand again.

The Dwight Howard vs. Shaq Dunk stat is incorrect. The NBA started recording Dunks in 2000. 8 Years into Shaq's career, so Dwight has more *recorded* dunks, but there's no way Dwight has more.

The Steph Curry/Ray Allen thing sound impressive, until you realize that each guy has taken well over 7000 3-pointers in their career. Curry having a .428 3-point percentage, compared to .400 for Allen makes it a lot less impressive. It comes out to making about three more shots for every 100 taken. Steve Kerr could have missed 100 consecutive 3 -pointers at the end of his career and still have a better percentage than Curry currently has.

Every team in the NFC South except for the Buccaneers were in the NFC West at some point. The Falcons and Saints were there from the merger realignment until the creation of the NFC South. Additionally, the Buccaneers were in the AFC West their inaugural season. They then moved to the NFC Central and the Seahawks moved from the NFC West to the AFC West, just to go back to the NFC West in 2002
