I started following the NBA in 1963-64 when I was ten years old. Back then he was viewed as an extremely talented player and an all-time favorite. The Boston Celtics just had a better "team" and that is what stopped the Lakers. God gave him physical gifts and a mindset to the point where he was specially ordained. His talents and abilities could not be taught. Needless to say he was my favorite player when I was growing up and because of him I became a fan of the LA Lakers. As one commentator said - Jerry West's personal life was complicated, but I just wish he knew how highly he was thought of by so many people. May he rest in peace and I trust he is enjoying heaven.

I started playing and following basketball since 1967, when I was 11. I was a big Knick fan after that. During their 1969-1970 Championship year, he was the only player we feared on the Lakers in the Finals! Since remembered his desperate shot to tie one of the games; thank God we won that game and the chip. R.I.P. sir, truly a great player and greater person.

As a GM Jerry always signed those players who were focused and worked hard and unselfish.

I loved watching Jerry West when he was playing. His jump shot was the most perfect I've seen before or since, arm straight up from the elbow, hand spread across the ball, with a release and follow through that practically guaranteed the ball would drop through the net. He was a good man from very humble beginnings similar to my own, so he kind of showed me that it didn't matter who or where I came from, I had permission to allow myself to have success in life. And by the way, in the early 70's the CBS Network televised the games nationally, and I remember when they played their opening they showed Jerry West dribbling the basketball down the court and around other players, and then then his body morphed into the NBA logo. So it IS Jerry West on the NBA logo.

Listening to him speak, what a nice and humble man. Wish there were more people like him in the world of politics and business. Think the world could become a better place overall, not overnight. But possible.

Nice to hear West speak. The logo matured with wisdom and though he was always a bit private and somewhat introverted... he held it in a lot but those that he knew and tuned into him saw his wisdom intuitively... Kobe was one of those who had a private and respectful intuitive friendship with Jerry West. Rest In Peace Mr. Clutch Mr. Logo.

It’s Disgraceful 😢. His heart 💜was with the Lakers. He’s always been a Lakers legend. You don’t spit on, and turn your back on a man who has always tried his best to do his best. Did he fail at times, absolutely, we all do. But he did more good for an organization than any person in any sports organization. That calls for a little respect and a lot of forgiveness.

what a great and touching 23 minutes. He lived his life and his actions showed more than the lip service most modern players give. Less talking more doing and again its very sad how the Lakers and the Buss family did him. Such a messy family and situation with Jim and Jene

There no date provided to give context as to how long before his death this charity function was. When you have a title that says "before his death", it implies it was recent.
