I loved watching NBA in the 80s. Nowadays everybody’s talking about the GOAT (player). It’s a team game. Not an individual one. Bird was a fantastic and exciting team player. It’s no wonder Bird and Magic revitalized the NBA. Their teams were fun to watch.
@SDesWriter
@SDesWriter 2 года назад
The GOAT thing is silly. Different positions had such wildly different aspects important to their job. MJ was the best scorer, best defender (for a guy who was also important to the offense), and best clutch player ever at the position. But was he "better" than a 35 year old Wilt almost putting up a quadruple double on Kareem in game 6 of the championships? Was he as unstoppable as Kareem in the paint when you needed a basket? Was he as good as getting his team mates involved as Stockton or Magic? People had different skills that made them special and that's why the GOAT talk is silly unless you're talking about positions or specific talents. No better passer or clutch scorer at the SF than Bird. Even Kobe couldn't have made that Celtics team any better than they were with Larry.
@ILoveOldTWC
@ILoveOldTWC Год назад
There are also different eras in which the game was different. While Kareem did the sky hook, Shaq had a newer version of it, the jump hook, for example. GOAT is probably a flawed concept.

I think that and his lack of flashy vertical leap were factors in people saying he was not athletic. The intangible things like leadership, hard work, willingness to go to the floor or play as rough as another team's enforcer even though he was the franchise, all make him a goat contender. Larry had a lot of athletic ability but what made him great is his ability to make a shot from anywhere. If you meet him at the three point line, he just took a step back, if you came out with him, he just took another step back. That would open up the inside for easy buckets.
@davidclaytonfreeman3306
@davidclaytonfreeman3306 3 года назад
I think the comments are about the relative athleticism to other players of his time and position. He was athletic enough to be a professional basketball player so he's already in the top 1% of humans but he was slow and couldn't jump so it's the fascination of how could he be one of the best to ever play? And he was without question. The difference his teammates and other greats always point to is his work ethic, leadership and basketball IQ. The same vocational traits that propel every great leader no matter the job. You have to be born with natural talent in the field you choose and identifying that early is key to greatness but those are honed by hard work. Then leading others to follow in any team situation requires a whole new set of abilities. One person holding all that is a generational freak of nature.

In the game that Kareem is talking about Larry had 36 pts, 21 rebs, 6 assts, 5 stls and 3 blks....he played 47 minutes.

Bird was the best small forward ever.......period!!! his basketball IQ was second to none. Can shoot, pass, rebound, play defense, make that crucial steel..and he did all that in an era when they actually played defense...

And to have only been in the league for 12 years and to be injured for the majority of 1989 with cast on both feet because of bone spurs and less than half a season due to a bad back in 1990, Larry's full 10 year career has to be the best 10 year carrer in the history of the game... bar none. No competition, or argument. If Bird was healthy like Lebron. Larry would've broken every record because he'll always be the GOAT

@agua9999 3 года назад
Only Larry Bird (twice) & Mark Price (once) achieved over 50% for all field goals (2point FG + 3point FG) during their [50-40-90 club] “elite shooting” seasons (with Bird’s 1987-1988 season being the highest at 51.3%). LarryLegend may not have been as tall as Kareem, big as Magic, athletic as Jordan, or as strong as Dr J, but he had better decision making & hand-eye coordination for passing, clutch shots, & faking out his opponent. he was an artist & the GOAT of NBA elite shooters.

That's the thing about Larry Bird, you played against him ONCE, and then he lived rent free in your head for the rest of your life. I've been watching "Winning Time" on HBO, and say what you will about that series, love it or hate it, but I just loved how they handled Larry Bird. You see, in Winning Time, every single new person being introduced, they put their name on the screen. Jerry West appears, and the text "Jerry West" appears for the first time on the screen next to him, for example. They do this with every single person in the series. Except with Larry Bird. When Larry Bird shows up, the text that appears on the screen is "YOU KNOW MY F*CKING NAME" and I loved that.

He did more with less than anyone in the history of the game. His BB IQ, will to win, and hard earned skills were what made him different. He WORKED. Personally I have Bird somewhere around #5 all time, give or take.

I think Pat Riley gave Bird the greatest compliment ever - He said "If I had to choose a person to take the last shot and save the game, I'd pick Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a person to take a shot to save my life, I'd choose Larry Bird".

When Bird stole the balk in the Piston's game it wouldn't meant nothing if DJ wasn't cutting towards the basket for the lay up. The Celtics, Lakers, Pistons,etc moved so well without the basketball they made the game look magical

Boston at Dallas. HUGE game. Mavericks up by one with two seconds. Boston inbounds. Everyone in the building, on ships at sea, their brother-in-law's dogs and their cousins knew where the ball was going. It didn't matter. It went there. Step-back jumper from about thirty feet. Nothing but net. It's impossible to choose a GOAT, but man, he's right in there.

Hatred of Bird used to be a requirement for a Laker fan. One celebrated Bird moment was when Mose Malone held Bird by the arms for Dr. J to take personal close up target practice.

Its hard tonsay who is number 1. Jordan or Bird. Both played hurt, sick, it didn't matter they were playing. Both could still take over a game well below feeling 100%. Respect to both their will to win could beat all. Mind over matter. If you don't mind it don't matter
