Little did people realize that this was the starting point of a 16 year run of dominance for both the Spurs & Lakers who would combine for 13 championship appearances & 10 championship victories 5 each & they would play each other in the playoffs 7 times
@@MoorshoI never understood this from Laker coaching and management perspective. Horry was more of a small forward anyhow. Del Harris was a terrible coach who never understood match ups. The Lakers traded Elden Campbell and Eddie Jones and for Rice and JR Reid. Dumb trade. Had the Lakers kept Campbell, he could have more easily matched up with Tim Duncan while Shaq was guarding Robinson or they could more easily switched off. While both Eddie and Kobe were 2 guards so was Ron Harper but when Phil Jackson paired up the big guards in Jordan and Harper it worked. Same for an older Harper and Kobe. So Eddie Jones and Kobe could have worked too. Horry would have been more effective as a SF and weak side help defender.
@@atbp828funny I was thinking the same same thing. Shaq is so hyped here, no control. He rushes everything and is so desperate to win. I love it and the journey to becoming a winner.
@@Waaben21technical skill? 😅 You mean like flopping, shooting into the defender, carrying, traveling, players now get away with literally anything, the alien that's running the NBA killed the brand, even though there's crazy money to be made, but the quality is awful
@earnestpeeplesjr8948 If Duncan and Robinson were together in the early 90's, they'd be the dynasty of the decade instead of the Bulls, imo. The core of Robinson, Sean Elliot and Avery Johnson were together a long time.
the 99 lakers were a joke! they should've won this series or at least pushed to 7 games. the fact that they got swept with Shaq, Kobe, Horry, Rice etc is a joke
It finally see it now. Everybody is more athletic nowadays but they obviously don’t care about defense enough. None of the defense I seen was really a hard foul. Today has more scorers than real gritty defenders. I completely understand Pat Bev now and why teams still get him
@@marioflowers6543Being a gritty defender is tougher in today’s game because of play style. Notice how close they are to the basket in this video? Notice how the two offensive players furthest from the ball are usually standing still? Tough to be gritty when you’re constantly sprinting in transition, your defensive rotations are 10 feet longer, and there is constant off ball movement. Pat Bev can do it because he’s only playing like 18 minutes a game.
@@Isoquantdebatable as era as a whole but still very much as in ‘99&2003/2005 but Shaq,Kobe,Iverson and Kidd were top 5 player’s especially Shaq n Kobe debatably were top 3 with Duncan
the spurs dynasty had been so underrated... cuz coach pop made them act like professionals - no show boating just straight business... all their championships not held in high regards but thats what i have seen... people talk about the bulls era, the lakers era, even the piston era.... but the spurs era was just quiet and humble just doing business as usual

The Lakers embarrassing sweeps against the Jazz and Spurs in 1998 and 1999 respectively showed just how badly they needed a true leader running the show, Del Harris and Kurt Rambis were completely outmatched as coaches in the playoffs.
Agree and Kobe barely legal. He need to learn not to jack ball. Shaq scored only 22 pts because of his hero ball. When Shaq got green light from Jackson it was 35 ppg. Kobe need to grow up and give ball in the post.
PFs during these days were the Lakers arch nemesis. Horry, Samaki Walker, AC Green etc used to get killed by Duncan, Rasheed Wallace, C Webb, Malone, KG.
i Love your comment ! i will say specially karl malone and stockton ! but we have to see that. that was a very young shaq and kobe was just a rookie coming little later back in 96 !
@@TheHeavensFellen What? Shaq used to put up crazy numbers against Robinson, he used to punish him cause he said David Robinson was his favorite player but Robinson ignored him when he wanted an autograph (lie) but still the story was a good one.
@EnTiempo824 not true alot of people remember. There was even that excuse that was the reason the Lakers won in 2000. What's not known or remembered is that the Spurs were favored to win the championship during the 1999-2000 & 2000-01 season by a huge margin. He was also favored to win MVP in both 2000 & 2001
Yeah, but the NBA wouldn't want that because it would put a blemish on Jordan's finals record. Any legitimately great team would NEVER play against Jordan.
I've already sent the link to your channel to like four of my relatives who i know will appreciate your contributions. Thank you! Keep'em comin please 🙏🏽
Back when Shaq was still getting swept in the playoffs by the Pacers, Rockets, Bulls, Jazz and Spurs. Tim Duncan definitely won this one on one matchup.
@@PIP...33 As we say last time Robinson provide that space that Garnett didnt had he always deal with triple team unlike Duncan. Easy to play 1 on 1 . Why he didnt win vs Luis Scola if he is great player ? Oh yes I forgot, he cant defend perimeter or score in crowd deal with double team on FIBA smaller court.
@@perditadurango9699KG never faced a triple team 😂 dude was so passive on offence, meanwhile Duncan was actually doubled consistently his first 6-7 years in basketball, when he was making conference finals with Antonio Daniels being his teams next leading scorer. Stop your idiocy
LOL This was on Shaq, when the Lakers played the Spurs again in 2001 Kobe took the leadership role and Shaq took a back seat, Kobe then Lead the Lakers to a sweep of the Spurs. Kobe was the Lakers best player in 2001..
The same guy who got murdered by Kobe the following season when he dunked all over him🥱🤣😂💯 the Spurs were going to lose to the Lakers no matter what in 2001💜💛🐍😎💯

I love how points are so meaningful, where small little guards dont get the offensive rebound and shoots as many 3’s as they want and draws fouls by hooking your arms into yours.
Don't know... it's more about iq and reaction time I believe. Shaq has even longer arms and wingspan (it ain't as noticable voz his arms ain't skinny but just pause the video and you can see at times) and still Duncan was way superior in those tip ins. Duncan had amazing instincts and reactions as well
Such great memories seeing these teams battle for so many years. I hated the Lakers at the time but just have nothing but love and respect for them because of Kobe. Golden era
I got such a beautiful moment of nostalgia when the commentator and the players after the whistle was blown were waiting to see who the foul was on. Remember when big men matched up and played the game with such force that foul trouble was a huge part of the strategic makeup of the game within the game. Now you got stars like LeBron being proud to go games without a single foul called against him. This current era is terrible
Well yes and no.......yes those are dumb comments.....but your comment is kinda false also .....Shaq was NBA first team.....and scoring champion in mid 90's....
Kobe didn’t even know defense was part is the game for like his first Six seasons… he didn’t even care, till Phil told him “ur going to have to start playing defense, if u wanna Win a Championship”! 😂 it hilarious and confusing watching Kobe play 100% defense in the Olympics… RIP Doberman 🙏
Not in 99 but def every year starting in 2001 he was torching them. And I mean taking it personal. Feel free to look up every year since 01 that he faced them in the playoffs
People forget Duncan was a PF. Watching these highlights you should be that much more impressed with him. Shaq scored more often when matched up with Robinson than he did with Duncan.
Duncan was 5/6 in finals and the one he lost vs heat they shoulda won. They were up 3-2 and were up in game 6 by 5 with less than a min. Crucial missed free throws by ginobli and Kwahi Leonard then pop took him out for that rebound attempt after missed brick by Lebron and the great prayer shot by Allen. Shoulda been Jordan status 6/6. But spurs made up very next year beating levron and heat by record margin finals win. Average of 20 pts out scored the heat in every game and they lost a game lol still beat them by and average of 20points. That is domination and determination
Wow! I miss this Spurs basketball. You can see how much the Lakers respect TD's game. He is being double teamed even when Shaq is guarding him in the paint.
Shaq was swept in 95, 96, 97, 98, 99. He was dominant but couldnt handle Malone or Duncan or Hakeem. But he sure dominated Rik Smiths, Vlade Divac and Jason Collins
He dominated Multi time DPOY Dikembe Mutombo, Duncan and CWebb throughout the 2001 and 2002 playoffs so your narrative he only performed well against east teams is nothing but a stupid ass narrative.
@@Theterminato2013 Mutombo was ass next to hofs like Ewing and Hakeem Cwebb always choke. He only "dominated" Duncan when Drob was past prime. When he faced real center lile Big Ben....you know what happened

Mental Vs Physical matchup! Back when u could just enjoy the matchup and appreciate the game as a whole. I was never a huge Shaq fan, but he was great and unstoppable with the Lakers. He was always the biggest guy on the court and the most privileged player in the NBA, but boi did he love to abuse his power… he threw more elbows than an MMA fighter and the refs let him get away with manslaughter! Tim had such a great balanced game, and was one of the rare big men in that era that could actually shoot FT’s, witch made him great in the Playoffs. But what I loved about him was his mental toughness, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him flinch or loose control or play with emotions? He always knew how to control his energy and stay focused, that made me respect him. Even in big moments with all the pressure on, I’ve never seen him choke!
