27:42 Webber with a bit of comic relief after a heavy section, and Ernie adding his characteristic wit to it, look at the smiles across the room after that. Open Court was the best NBA show of all time without a doubt, not even close
I love when they have Brent Barry on. He doesn't exactly mesh that well with those guys personality wise, but he's just so observational and smart about the game.
I got to know him when I was on the golf team at Oregon State. He was a nice guy. And remember, he is still the only white guy to win the dunk contest.
Shout out to you for uploading this! I been looking EVERYWHERE for a way to watch more episodes of this show and I can't find it. Thanks for hooking it up for me ✊
Brent Barry was a really good player. Really fun to watch. It´s a pity he didn´t find a niche and develop as I think he should. I think had he came into the league at this era he would have had a more prominent career, he could dribble, shoot 3s, pass and dunk.
Idk he really had the green light to let it fly and dribble in Seattle and still passed up a lot of open looks. He was a great offensive player but I think he was too lax/not aggressive enough to ever really be as good as he could have been. Although I agree he was a good player and wish he had gotten more credit. From the day he got there to the day he left I thought he was the second best player on the sonics behind hall of famers GP & Ray Allen
@@pman8478 He once (I think it was in another of these episodes) said Ricky Rubio was the player which reminded him the most on his style but nowadays. That tells you he was a pass-first mentality player, even tho his % are truly amazing for a wing his size. I still believe he would look awesome in todays era, far better than Rubio in my opinion. But probably you are right and he just didn´t have the hunger his father had. Anyways, truly a big fan of his playstyle.
I grew up watching the Lakers during the early David Stern Era- love what he and his administration was able to do for the league. The NBA has come a long way.
@@mongoslade277 ESPECIALLY in 2002!!! I quit watching the NBA for about 3,4 years after that rigged Lakers v. Kings WCF!! It was disgraceful when Tim Donaghy came out as having fixed games, especially between the Lakers and Kings! David Stern swept that embarrassment under the rug, no one even talks about it!!
Chuck was being honest. But I believe that PED's are more rampant now in Sports than ever before... You can see this from the Jose Canseco era as well.
Ive always said this and maybe this is from growing up in baltimore when it was happening but cal ripken jr and his streak saved baseball after the 94 strike ,McGuire and sosa and the home run race took baseball to the next level
This is one of the best conversations about PEDs ive heard, I would have liked them to touch on how steroids aren't a magic fixall, you still have to put in work, eat well, be in the gym constantly. You can't take steroids and sit on the couch for a month and magically be in shape afterwards.
Basketball seems like it’d one of the least benefited by PEDs of the major sports, like football and baseball where brute strength is more involved. Maybe growth hormone
Notice how all of the guys only talked about David Stern in professional terms. None of them wanted to say much about him as a person. We all know these guys didn't like him, but they just need to accept he did build a massive billion dollar company out of a sports league.
Basketball has some features that makes PEDs less beneficial. First of all you already have to have a special body type and be a freak athlete. The skillset is so diverse and fine-motor based and quickness and quick decision-making. PEDs help power, endurance, and repetitive skills more. The one area that would help greatly is recovery.
PED helps muscle strength, stamina, speed, that is why cycling, track and field, lifting, and swimming are heavy in PED. For guys like Chuck said, like those G-league players trying to get a chance in NBA, what they need is not PED to help their physical side, they need to enhance skills or basketball IQ. They need defense, shooting, shot selection, right decision-making. Sometimes all a guy need is couple inches taller PED can’t help these.
I don’t care HOW you frame it, it’s CHEATING, it’s FRAUDULENT, and it proves that those players DONT DESERVE to BE in the NBA. And players in track, cycling, weight lifting & swimming shouldn’t cheat the system either. Any accomplishments on PED’s are FAKE.
@@irishgrl Dawg, a PED doesn’t make you Superman. It only allows your muscle acquisition to be more efficient. Some superstar athletes have genetics that basically allow them to do the same, and a PED doesn’t nearly make up the differemce
No one pushed back against Ernie's argument about PED by noting how much money the networks made from sports that had multiple violators on each team? People talk about the player's salaries but say little about the cash the owners take in, and no one talks about how much money these networks nail down ever year. the NFL takes in $15 billion a year..tax free and more than 50% of that is in tv deals, and that's just the NFL. PED discussion surrounding sport is window dressing much like player's salaries. You think any game can/should be "clean" then you're playing yourself.
Amen, all elite athletes are ALL on roids since the sixties. There is no doping agency like USADA overseeing the NBA (which is a joke for itself) like in UFC's case. King HGH still breaking records but Turkoglu was on roids, yeah sure 😂
Accountability, responsibility, observation, intellect and experience. Inside crew, especially Shaq and Chuck when they're serious, these guys teach how to conduct oneself through life.
This really makes me put into consideration just how recent Obama being elected and the legalization of gay marriage are. Damn we kinda are just getting started. Also Barkley has said that same thing about Brons career
i think its pretty shitty to assume sosa mcguire or bonds growth was attributed to hgs. even if they took hgs (which im not saying they didnt) it was their drive that made them great players. if i took hgs today i couldnt hit 65 home runs against any pitcher in the mlb id be lucky to get one. but its some traverty that some payers might have taken a drug that every player was using to become the best ever.
Bonds hat size grew over a full size after the age of 30. Come on man... No ones doubting their skill. It’s the numbers and the records they broke. That they wouldn’t have broken otherwise.
So much more pleasant than with the jet there. Also, glad they're talking about social issues. Be nice if more black men talk about so many successful black men marrying white blonde women. Just saying.
The only way steroids would be beneficial for an NBA Player would be to help recover from an injury. Otherwise getting jacked would effect your shot & ball control.
Now, the dope(pot)is legal. In Massachusetts and other franchise states, pot&edibles are legal. A pill cannot make one play like Jordan. Because, the mental game is on a much higher plane than just the physical game. PED'S alone don't make one great. The great routine development of skill, practice, hard work, commitment and performance contributes to athletic greatness. Legacy =Russell + hopes + dreams + hard work + network connections + luck + dare to be great. Spread the word! Remember, there are more jobs for educated professionals than pro ball players.
You're right that PEDS alone don't make someone great, but at the highest level where the slightest advantage could tip the balance, it does make a difference. That's why Floyd Mayweather for example didn't want to fight anyone who he had the slightest suspicion about. And at the very least, while the mental aspect might keep you from winning as much as another great who is mentally tougher, PEDS can still enhance your longevity and statistical output...not that I'm not thinking of anyone in particular, heh.
14:00 Chuck it's always have to do on morality. Plus if you're poor and you made your way up as high as nba player, that player has higher morals than a rich player.
Ask Lyle Alzado whether it was worth it. I’m sorry but I disagree with Chuck about whether it’s ok to take an “equalizer” and contrary to his denial, he is basically saying it’s ok to have 2 separate moral means tests based on a player’s economic status…
PED had nothing to do with his contracting cancer. That's something he said, he went out and talked about it, he had no scientific facts to back up those claims.
What if it were phrased in terms of the difference between life and death vs the ability to buy a bigger luxury house and/or a better luxury car? In other words survival vs greed...
No one knows anything about PEDs. Meanwhile you have people traveling 7 days a week, playing 4 games a week and putting 30kgs of lean muscle every off season. Right…
any elite athlete, regardless the sport, is taking taking something (steroids of some kind). And that's cool i guess, i wouldn't but they're at the top of the top, i could understand
@@SleepyDroid Whether you want to admit it or not, racial resentment towards Obama played a role in the "division". The other problem is that Obama sold out to the neoliberal establishment and didn't deliver on the change that he originally campaigned on. Those two things led to Trump being able to win on a campaign of racism and populism (those things and Hillary running a corrupt and weak campaign).
