Theme used for NBC's Major League Baseball Game of the Week from 1983-88. Arguably the defining theme for Gen-Xers who followed the sport in that period.
Being a proud Gen-Xer in west-central Wisconsin, who had the main TV station in his town be an NBC affiliate … … this makes me LOVE my Saturday afternoons all over again - and with, THE BREWERS! This is MY CREW!
At least NBC Sports Regionals would have a modernized form of the classic opener with variants for the teams they cover. I hope NBC gets the rights for Saturday games back soon.
Love the theme, and seeing the old stadiums in the vid too. County Stadium in Milwaukee, and Anaheim Stadium before they renovated the outfield seating area of today
I had a sense of excitement watching Saturday baseball NBC and Monday baseball ABC along with watching the Braves on Super Station TBS in 1980s or watching the Cubs on WGN when they played day baseball at home.
This theme is I believe the best sports theme of all time. If there is a better one I can’t think of any at this time. When ABC was broadcasting MLB back in the 1980’s that theme was very good, but it cannot top this one.
Interesting. It seems that Clark Gault claims authorship of this one on his Web site, on behalf of Roger Tallman Music. www.clarkgault.com/roger-tallman-music/ It's' listed as the "1984 World Series theme" as well as the GOTW theme.
YOu're right! Though the score I have is listed on Clark's playlist as #16 NBC Basketball Theme. But, the score lists Roger as writer and Clark as arranger. Do you have any Al McGuire Halftime Hoops or State Farm Halftime Hoops? I did two different themes for that. Also, opening music for the 88 Orange Bowl ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A78_jYW1GHo.html ) and Theme for 1986 Baseball All Star game. Plus, the only piece selected as Theme for the 88 Summer Olympics (until they asked John Williams to reuse his 84 theme) soundcloud.com/mikefinkel/olympic-theme-88
Awesome theme, The baseball game of the week was a staple on NBC for years until 1989, Saturday baseball on Fox is NOT what it is. Does anybody watch it? I don't! Those were the days times change.
It's NBC who sold out for NASCAR, Arena Football and a full scale run in the NHL... and it took them killing off the NFL (prior to 2006), MLB, NBA and even Sportsworld (including the NHRA) just to get to where they are since the 2000s. Fox was amazing since birth, but by around 2013 or so... they have been becoming more of a comedy act (outside of FSN MLB/NBA/NHL stuff and NCAA activities).
@@matthewmcsweeney5996 This is why NBC may never get baseball back. There is no room on the schedule. Besides, if NBC got baseball back, the odds are very likely that the majority of the games would be aired on NBCSN (NBC Sports Network), a cable channel. There would be few games on NBC over the air broadcast network. Just look at MLB on FOX, with the huge majority of games on cable (FS1).
@@norbertoniebres1615 I think that having NBCSN showing MLB games would be perfectly fine. In fact, with Fox Sports having no more regional sports networks, it would be a lot easier for NBCSN to show games from the NBC Sports Regional Networks. That would mean that NBCSN could simply use the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants or Oakland Athletics NBC Sports Regional Network feed for games. Especially during the Stanley Cup Playoffs in April and May when most of NBC Sports' teams are covering them. NBC would start showing MLB games either on Saturday afternoons or Saturday evenings starting Memorial Day weekend, which is usually when the Stanley Cup Finals start. This is how it would be if NBC and NBCSN had both the MLB and the NHL.
One of my favorite sports-related themes of all time. In fact, I still remember watching the 1983 All-Star Game when the first variant of this music was used. And that you got it in the clear is huge.
Veterans stadium in Philadelphia where today the Phillies try to make it 6 in a row with lefty Steve Carlton on the hill facing the Montreal Expos on NBC's game of the week, Hello everyone Vin Scully here and along side me as always Joe Garagiola.
This is such a great theme for NBC's MLB GOW for actually from 1985 to 1989. The theme used from 1983 to 1984 had a slight difference containing a slight engine motor background sound. NBC decided to mix down this part and make this a staple for MLB on NBC of the '80s.
NBC Sports proudly presents...the Major League Baseball Game of the Week! Today, from historic Fenway Park, it's an American League East matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
0:05 NBC Sports Philadelphia proudly presents Philadelphia Phillies Baseball Today from Citizens Bank Field, it's the Pittsburgh Pirates versus the Philadelphia Phillies
Fox Sports ain't let that happening. Which is a shame honestly, but after the Baseball Network debacle, NBC really didn't want to get back in to covering Major League Baseball... except for big events (All-Star Game and postseason including World Series). CBS and Fox both tried to go after the MLB over-the-air TV rights, with Fox being victorious. I feel like if CBS had acquired the rights in 1996, they probably would have resigned the contract with MLB, just like Fox Sports does. The only way NBC Sports is going to get back in the MLB game is through NBCSN, and only if TBS decides to not renew their MLB contract and ESPN doesn't acquire the TBS game rights (postseason only as there is already a Sunday MLB broadcast on ESPN) or decides to not to renew their MLB contract either. Not very likely going to happen either.
1:20 "Hi everybody this is Vin Scully along with Bob Costas live from the friendly confies of Wrigley Field in the north side of chicago for game five of the 2016 National League Divsional Series between the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants."
Even though I grew up in Northern California, the Giants and A's horrible broadcasters weren't the voice of my childhood. It was Vin every week on NBCSGOTW. It broke my heart when NBC lost the rights to CBS. No more Vin. This was in the days before SiriusXM.
Good afternoon everybody, I’m Bob Costas alongside Tony Kubek, today bringing you the New York Mets taking on the Cincinnati Reds from Riverfront Stadium
I am thinking that this particular theme should be used for Major League Baseball games broadcast on NBC Sports Regional Networks (Fomerlly Comcast Sports Net / CSN Regional Networks).
It's the Chicago Cubs taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. From Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis, this is Major League Baseball's Game of the Week on NBC.
This theme would be a great work for future voice-overs majoring in Broadcasting. However, none can match nor fill in the shoes of the legendary voice of former KABC radio DJ Les Marshak. As a kid, I have attempted to sound like him, but I was hardly close to topping a legend; nevertheless, it was fun to learn how to be a good voice-over.
DalekPlague Correction: Les Marshak was a former radio DJ for WABC New York. I apologize for the mistake I have written. To add, Marshak stands out as one of the best cold readers on the air relative to the late-Ernie Anderson (ABC) and Don Robertson (CBS). Ironically, both Anderson and Robertson are mentioned on the Wikipedia, but Les Marshak has been overlooked and hardly mentioned; he should be among category of voice-overs for he is at the pinnacle. What a disgrace.
That first screen with the All-Time Home Run Leaders. Most of those names have been taken over by steroid users like Bonds, A-Rod (although I believe he only was using them during his tenure with the Rangers), Sosa, McGwire, etc. Those names on that list, with maybe some exceptions, Albert Pujols and maybe A-Rod for example, are the true All-Time Home Run Leaders.
Here's the current list of the all-time home run leaders (anyone with an asterisk next to their name is known to have used steroids at some point in their MLB career and anyone with (HoF) is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY): 1. Barry Bonds* with 762 2. Hank Aaron with 755 (HoF) 3. Babe Ruth with 714 (HoF) 4. Albert Pujols with 703 (HoF likely) 5. Alex Rodriguez* with 696 6. Willie Mays with 660 (HoF) 7. Ken Griffey Jr. with 630 (HoF) 8. Jim Thome with 612 (HoF) 9. Sammy Sosa* with 609 10. Frank Robinson with 586 (HoF)
Great announcers Joe garciola Vin scully eighties baseball when baseball was still baseball yeah it was still baseball the good old days thank God for RU-vid
I hope y’all will reply to this loved seeing Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola in this video thought about Saturday afternoons as a kid hot dogs for lunch and watching the NBC game of the week with Vin and Joe announcing RIP Joe
NBC used another theme, it played during the 84 season such as the Jack Morris no hitter at Chicago, do you have that? EDIT: I notice you posted an Alternate theme, however although the melody is the same, it's not exactly the same as 1984. I have seen a 1985 NBC opening that used the Alternate in between this.
