Alverado alluded to a larger issue. Core Players are comfortable in their pay and have all the leverage to load manage. While fringe rotational guys like Alvin will play no matter what because he is playing for his basketball life essentially. The incentive for star players to show out for the fans is almost completely gone. Just look at how they treat the all star weekend, most players would rather vacay

@trevorc8778 I don't think the objective is for players to have the same amount of leverage than the owners. The objective is to make the wealth disparity between owners and players less. Collectively, the athletes have a net worth of $4,254,355,514. That's more than the Indiana Pacers' Herb Simon ($3.3B net worth) -- who is the 15th wealthiest owner out of 30. Through collective bargaining, the Player's Union can make better demands and get better concessions. Will the players ever have more leverage than the owners? No, I don't think that's possible...but again that's not the point.

Horrible take! The answer is not obvious as nba players get paid way more than any other pro basketball league. 1. Cutting games is never ok as owners who lose out on those revenue would ask the players to take paycuts. Neither side would agree to this! 2. The difference between The Spurs and the rest of the league since. The Spurs still won games, even if one of the players sat out. Also, no one outside of San Antonio was watching the Spurs so it didn't upset the fans when one of the big three sat out. Pop also didn't sit his players out 30 games a season. What these teams need to be concerned that fans are going to start staying home rather than pay hundreds of dollars to see a game without the teams marquee players.

@naranja1972
@naranja1972 Год назад
it's all about scheduling tbh. like JJ said, don't schedule marque games on back2back and limit/eliminate travel back2backs. I personally think only home teams should play back2back tbh.. because they're already home and won't be affected as much as a team traveling into town from another game the previous night. we already know teams sit players on back2backs, so if we eliminate travel back2backs we won't have the situation of fans missing a team that is coming into their town. for ex.. gsw only gets back2back at home only.. it' wouldn't be that big of a deal if they sit players in home games since they play half(?) the season there so there's plenty of chance for fans to see them.

The solution I never see discussed, is having more depth in the teams. Let the players play all games, but your starters could be playing some games for 20 minutes instead of a full 30 minutes. But the star driven nature of the games, means that most teams end up trading depth for stars and now those stars have to play for insane minutes a game.

I think number of games played during the year should factor into the all nba awards and end of year rewards. Meaning and this is just an example if a player doesn’t play 55+ games they can’t be eligible for those awards. I think something like that is the cleanest way to do this. You want those awards or you want your bonus in your contract for been on one of the all nba teams, well you need to play and need to be available for at least 55/82 game or whatever number is chosen by the league and players

Teams and players primarily load manage to avoid or rehab injuries. The main problem is load management reached to a point that some teams and specifically players miss out games with ridiculous reasons which is now hurting the NBA product. To manage this load management thing is to reduce the number of regular season games. Careers are defined more during the playoffs so it is much better to put the attendance and emphasia of marquee players there. For nationally televised games, it should be a must that load management is prohibited unless medical doctors prohibits the player. The league already manage some of the back to backs to avoid stress and fatigue to the body of players. The assocation can also tap the contracts of the players and put specifics on load management.

As a fan of D Rose, Kawhi, Zion & TMac, I'm on the players' side. Do fans & the NBA league office want their favorite max contract players to miss the whole season because they played through injuries that weren't safe to play with??? Or would you rather those players be available for the part of the playoffs season and the most important parts of the regular season? Take it from this huge Derrick Rose fan. A franchise's (and city's) 10 year future can dramatically change with one catastrophic injury. Whether it's a freak injury or an injury caused by wear and tear. If you told me there was someway to still have 10-12 years of prime Derrick Rose, without that injury but for only 60-70 games/year. I'd take that deal every time. Same for Grant Hill, Demarcus Cousins, T Mac, Kawhi, Yao, Penny, D Wade, Kobe's achilles injury, etc. Most elite players want to play more than anything. They want to win rings and entertain the fans. But the fans need to understand that asking them to just play through it is sometimes asking for trouble.
@blacknetsmed
@blacknetsmed Год назад
Load management wasn't going to help D Rose land correctly. Load management isn't going to stop Zion from carrying excess weight or walk correctly. Load management wasn't going to stop Mcgrady from dealing with a degenerative back condition that he was told he would have to deal with for his entire career as a rookie and that he is on borrowed time.

The issue isn’t players sitting with injuries…. It’s players who want a personal day off and don’t play. They play maybe 3 games a week sometimes 2 games. They get plenty of time off, they get whole summers off, they get a 9 day break in the middle of their season. This argument for more time off is crazy. It sounds like teachers who work only 8 months a year claim they’re over worked and need more time off. These people couldn’t handle the monotony of a 9-5 every day with this mentality of requesting time off to miss games using a bogus fake injury as the reason to not playing.
@Luffyopm

Kobe & Kawhi are my favorite players & it was great Kobe played thru injury but at the same time him not wanting to rest in my opinion is what caused his achilles injury. With Kawhi he played a few back to back games that 2021 season & the playoffs he was literally playing every other day for like a month straight which resulted in his acl injury again my opinion. I don’t think fans understand the toll these players put themselves thru on a nightly basis. I respect players that can play thru injury but I’m not going to disrespect the ones that choose not to. Who are we to tell someone how injured they are?

They should just split the ticket cost. Have a lower priced ticket that's what you get today (so there's no perception of a money grab). But then offer the ability to buy insurance policies on top of tickets that offer a partial refund policy if a player isn't playing that night. As with any insurance policy, you can select how much of a refund so that if you are travelling out of town, those costs can be covered.
@brett4932
@brett4932 Год назад
You'd never get that offered by the teams/stadiums. HOWEVER - you could probably offer a third-party policy somehow if you could scale it. Would be very difficult to get established though. Creative idea nonetheless.
@markuswong
@markuswong Год назад
@@brett4932 You're right. I think a more likely scenario is that the team would sub-contract to an established insurance company the exclusivity rights to handle insurance at point of sale for their tickets. It becomes a small revenue stream for the team, giving them a financial incentive to agree to it. Another path forward... is the NBA has established relationships with sports betting companies. This kind of insurance isn't very much different from a sports bet. The only difference is that this bet is intended as relief for a ticket buyer who might feel cheated if their favorite player wasn't on the floor that night.
@UHcougs22
@UHcougs22 Год назад
It should be included when you buy a ticket. If I pay to see golden state Vs my home team, they are already charging more than other games under the assumption we’re seeing curry. If he’s hurt that’s one thing, but sitting just to rest is bs. Make the team who’s letting their star players sit pay for the partial refunds.
@markuswong
@markuswong Год назад
@@UHcougs22 I'm sure there's a lot of wear and tear in a NBA game. Sometimes a player might not be officially injured, but there's a high risk of injury if they continue playing. It would be reckless to ask that player to risk their health to be on the floor. The only way to assure ticket holders that star players will play - would be to reduce the games. The league will need to significantly raise prices of tickets to do that. In that situation, the fans don't win... because it won't be a small price hike. I would still pay to watch Poole and Wiggins play. I just wouldn't pay as much as I would if Curry and Klay were on the floor. Reducing the number of games is like saying "there is no value in watching the Warriors without Curry"... which for most fans is certainly untrue. Tickets are priced assuming they're all players are healthy. The problem the league is trying to solve is when ticket holders feel cheated because they paid the same price as someone else. Having a proper system to adjust the price afterwards is a great mechanism to do that.
@UHcougs22
@UHcougs22 Год назад
@@markuswong if I go to a golden state game I'm going to see Curry. All those other players are cool to see, but not worth me paying twice the cost for a game against the wizards, spurs, etc for the same seat. It's literally twice as expensive. You can't charge that for wiggins and poole.

To me, even if you shorten the season, load management is here to stay. Because it goes beyond the NBA season. Players get started young and sports training has improved so much…but there are consequences to that. The strain that is placed on kids bodies has increased. With the money that is tied to sports at multiple levels, the ‘pro’ mindset starts earlier and earlier. I think you can see that with how many young players come into the league and make immediate impacts or have very short adjustment periods. And it’s not just an nba thing, you see it with other leagues as well.

As CJ says, the problem stems from every team is positioning themselves for the playoffs. That implies that teams are willing to sacrifice higher seeds to avoid injury risk. So teams see regular-season games as expendable. It's why I hardly bother to watch an NBA game start to finish until the second round of the playoffs. If the teams don't really care if they win or lose that game, why should the fans? The issue, then, is how to make regular season games more important. I think a possible solution is to change the playoff format. Ideally, I would reduce the playoff field from 20 (including play-in teams) to 8, but that's never going to happen. I'd also like to give higher seeds a stronger advantage than just homecourt advantage. We are clearly seeing veteran teams be willing to rest stars to rest them ahead of the playoffs because the benefit of resting them outweighs the consequences of going down one or two seeds. Maybe the solution is to reward higher seeds even more than we already do, such as giving them a one-game lead in the playoffs before the series even starts. It'd be like the 2020 play-in between Memphis and Portland where Memphis had two win two games to advance whereas Portland only had to win one. The NBA determined that Portland had won more games than Memphis so their path to the next round should be easier. This shouldn't just be true for low seeds, this should be true for every playoff matchup. Maybe then we won't see nearly as many healthy scratches if teams knew sitting stars in the regular season would result in automatic playoff losses.

Did you not see Curry running circles around the Celtics in Finals because they were gassed and he was fresh? If he has to milk an injury to avoid the 82 regular season slog, of course he's going to do it. The Grizz, Suns and Celtics all had higher seeds than the Warriors but it didn't matter since Steph was healthy and rested.
@mrmacross
@mrmacross Год назад
@@daveclark8337 We're arguing the same point. Curry was positioning himself for the playoffs so the Warriors didn't bother activating him in the last month/12 games of the season to rest a foot injury. My biggest issue with all of this is that NO OTHER sport has these issues, the NBA has grown so much and the money is so insane that it becomes an issue. NHL players never complain about 82 games and it’s a far more physical sport. It all comes down to the money now, a team wants to sit a guy down because he’s now worth X amount of money and if he gets hurt they’re fucked. The player wants to sit either because they’re lazy or because they’re worth X amount of money now and if they get hurt their careers fucked.
