Haha! Thanks very much for sitting through that much moisture! I used to be a lot more down in the mouth when riding in the rain. But once i relaxed a bit and learned to accept it, it’s been far more enjoyable to ride, in spite of the weather.

3 friends and I stayed at that exact camp site in 2018 doing the NC500. Better weather, but the views were just as amazing. Really enjoying your journey, and reminding me of why we’re wanting to go back ASAP. What an amazing experience to not see another soul for miles and miles, and be able to see this amazing country along the best roads in the UK.

Hi Andy, Epic effort to ride through those wet conditions on those narrow roads👍🏍. Don’t know about you but when you ventured off the edge of the road in the wet and mud my heart was in my throat. Thought the front might’ve slid out with no grip...but never fear you made it unscathed 👊😀 and so did I on my lounge 😂. Great video footage considering the rain...the lenses stayed relatively clear. As usual Thanks for your tireless efforts to bring your adventures to your adoring fans no matter the atrocious conditions. Cheers.

i did most of the NC500 clockwice last summer solo..... in 26-30deg and sun..... was briliant riding :-) going back in july this year with my brother-in-law in tow going the opposite direction

Love riding the roads in west highlands. btw locals say the best weather is in May, June and July. The water is brown, because it is coming from peaty ground

Spent many a cold night up soltau, very cold, very wet, wed exercise up there several times a year, we were based in paderborn from 84-90, best posting we ever had.

Some of that looked quite tropical, I did find out recently parts of the west even have palm trees due to being a few degrees warmer because of the effects of the jet stream. Maybe I'll make it to Scotland one day and see those awesome views.

You know, here in Colorado we have a few routes almost as narrow as Applecross Pass. But they are paved with concrete (as opposed to asphalt), and we call them "bicycle paths". ;-)

That Highland cow was definitely a bull! Road 5s in the wet are awesome, rained every day when we were there in May. You went by the very best cafe in Scotland Nannys!! The view from the front eating lunch looking over the loch is amazing....... when it's not raining.

if you had Gortex gloves on your hands got wet because you had your heated grips on, the heat will reverse the properties of the gortex layer and wick water in, so you have the choice of cold dry hands or warm wet ones

Many thanks Mark. I’d be lying if i said that the Cameras were without problems. I pushed it a bit far and the helmet cam actually crapped out completely for the last couple of hours. That’s why no helmet shots at the end! I bunged it in a bag of rice at the basecamp and all was good again by the next day.

Awesome stuff Andy... I have only done the Bealach Na Ba once when it wasn't raining, seems to have its own micro climate. The translation, incase your weren't aware is Pass of the Cattle as it was an old cattle driving road back in the day. M6s are OK, I preferred the Roadtec 01s which gave a lot more confidence. Currently having to burn through some Bridgestone before proper mileage begins when the snow disappears.

You should have gone with TMF, when he done the NC500 it didn't seem to rain at all!!! PS: I've never been over the Applecross Pass, I have been over the Hardknott Pass, and I don't know if it's the view from the camera, but the Hardknott seems steeper, although much shorter. Cheers Gordon

Agreed! She knows best! I wouldn't really say we were camping. I had a double bed and the front seats spin round to make a cosy little lounge! Oh and we had heating and hot water too! Glamping!

Can't beat the NC500, great video. Got my 2010 FZ1-N delivered yesterday, it took me 6 months to find a good one I think. Gear indicator, heated grips, power commander, new front discs and new powder coated wheels. Need the weather to clear up here in Scotland to get out so fingers crossed.

I did this route a couple of years ago - it’s stunning and I’d love to return - but never again during tourist season. More tourists than midges, and there’s a lot of midges! I’d also rent a dual purpose bike, the locals can direct you to the gravel roads less traveled.

Andy Man Cam. Well, I’m Canadian, so there’s little room for me to bicker about bugs. One of my favorite runs is through Newfoundland (via Gros Morne) then Labrador via the Trans-Lab Highway. Up there the Black-flies mate with crows and, at certain times of the year, if you stop along the road to relieve yourself without wearing a body-net, your head isn’t the only thing you’ll lose.

It was stunning to be fair. I’m planning on heading back this year to do the nc500 now I’ve got a helmet camera and have a better idea on making the vloggs.

Excellent vlog as usual and glad to hear the brilliant theme tune again. Sorry but this type of riding isn't for me. Cold, wet, poorly maintained narrow roads and if it stops raining plagued by midges. Like hitting your head against a brick wall, it's brilliant when you stop. But then again what else can you expect from a southern softie! 😁

Thanks MrC! It does seem to be plagued with potential downsides! The views though, make it all worth it. Plus it’s so much closer than the Alps! The roads on this section could certainly have been in better condition though. They do thankfully get better as we go

Mostly it’s always been ok. But this was simply far too much rain. The camera did actually stop working after this. But after leaving it in a bag of rice overnight, it was working again by morning!

I did that the other way around 2 years ago, and fortunately in better weather. It was in the school holidays, yet nowhere near as much traffic as you encountered. Very odd.

Absolutely. Unfortunately both cameras stopped working at some point due to the moisture. But that’s because i had the rear door open when it really should have been closed!

How did you make the conversation with your step dad...be so clear on the video editing ??? my BT Inert-phone Bluetooth speaker...its no way near the Gopro mic...How do you make the receiving conversation be so clearly heard?.. Thanks very much S&J. I actually Soldered a 3.5mm plug on to the speaker of the headset and then connected that directly to the camera. Sadly it didn’t work perfectly, but on the whole was very useable.

Sometimes your speed was a bit too much for these wet conditions, so i found myself squeezing my jaws because of the tension )

Trust me, the last thing that I want to do is come off, so the speed ‚in the saddle‘ so to speak, was just right. It’s important to remember that quite often the feeling of speed from wide angle videos is also often exaggerated and with a little motion blur, this feeling is further increased. I’ll admit that we were going a little quicker than i ever would have gone before in these conditions, but that’s only testament to just how good the Michelin Road 5 tyres are. The confidence is inspiring! But thanks for the concern and cheers for watching! Sorry it was a bit tense! 😬
