When some 35,000 Americans descended on Dublin, Ireland, for the Emerald Isle Classic football game between Notre Dame and Navy (played Sept. 1 at Aviva Stadium), it was for many a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the country, learn about their Irish heritage, and celebrate Notre Dame's rich academic, faith and athletic tradition.

All these years, I never knew Notre Same originated in the home of my ancestors. My Father, God rest his soul, was a true fan, the only football he watched.

I desend from Dublin. My Grandmother's maiden name was O'Sullivan and they dropped the "O" when the family moved from Ireland in the 1800's to America.
@BobPapadopoulos
@BobPapadopoulos 8 лет назад
It didn't. It's a Catholic school built on funding from French Catholic church. The reason they are the "Fighting Irish" is because of the school's third President, who was the unit chaplain of the 69th Infantry during the Civil War, aka the Irish Brigade.

HolyDiver Bronco My grandma's family came over before then, but they kept the O' in front of Quinn. I used to roll my eyes when I would see a Notre Dame game on TV and look at Brady Quinn.
@clayfada6993
@clayfada6993 6 лет назад
O' Quinn is not really any better than quin ,both are anglicisations of a gaelic name as are most irish names so wouldn't be rolling my eyes.There are loads of quinns in my village and county.For instance my name is boland,but originally and still is O' Bheolain.My sisters before they were married were ni bheolain and when i was a boy i was ui bheolain,I can use the gaelic or english version of my name,but my point is that the anglicisations though not wrong as such are not more original than the other

@@BobPapadopoulos actually not true. Knute Rockne coined the Fightin Irish name. He said, "This team is full of nothing but Fightin Irish" and it stuck. That's straight from Notre Dame Lore. 👍
@anthonyabbett2473
@anthonyabbett2473 2 года назад
Well Notre Dame was started by 4 French Priests. The "Irish" nickname is from the teams of the 20's. Knute Rockne said his team was full of "Fightin Irish" and the name stuck. So if Notre Dame went home it would be France not Ireland. But hey, Ireland is awesome too. 👍 GO IRISH 🍀🏈

Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, of Skunk Works fame, was the son of Swedish immigrants. As a youngster in Michigan, he was compared to an Irish boxer named Kelly. That nickname stuck.

Every thing in Scotland has come from Ireland, name Scots, language (where the Irish monks settle on western isles) Whiskey, the family name Mc and Mac which are Irish family names for daughter and grand daughter off (since Ò is for son off)
@mkeibergin3775

T he kilt the Scots wear today is from the design for an English King specifically made for him, a King George who refused to wear the Scottish dress cos it was too IRISH, this is why the English designed the Kilt worn by the Scots today to satisfy their King. the original KILT, KELT, is Irish and can be proved. There are some beautiful drawings, and illustrations of the IRISH dress of the 16th and 17th centuries available in books which can be sourced. If you really want to know the history of the KILT ask the English, they will gladly tell you, Brien Boru

Notre Dame has no connection to Ireland whatsoever. The founder of the university was French. It is built in Indiana. The only connection to Ireland is the athletic nickname of "Fighting Irish" which comes from a Notre Dame football player shouting to his teammates who had Irish sounding last names that "You're Irish and you're not fighting worth a lick." The name would stick after that and that is the entirety of the connection to the island of Ireland.
@jamesford2078
@jamesford2078 6 лет назад
DoesNotExist305 you couldn’t be more wrong. The main student body for three quarters of the 20th century was Irish catholics from Illinois and the surrounding areas. This lead many Irish people in New York City to relate to them. When the Notre Dame football team would come to play at Yankee stadium the fans (WHO WERE IRISH) would get drunk and fight. One reporter who was covering one such occasion to come titled his article here come the Fightin Irish (referring to the crowd) and the named stuck. So while they may not have a connection to the geographic island of Ireland they sure as hell are Irish.

@1notredamefightingirishfan12
It could be Northwestern's fans shouting "Kill the Fighting Irish" during the match-up in 1899 or the exhortation from a Notre Dame player to his teammates, "What's wrong with you guys? You're all Irish and you're not fighting worth a lick" during the Michigan game in 1909

"Notre Dame" is French for "Our Lady"; the founders of the college were French priests. Despite the name, ND is not Irish.
