Greetings everyone! Welcome back to Groovy Thursdays.
This weeks offering are “5 Stupendous Neil Peart grooves”. Neil was such an iconic drummer. His gift to the world of drums and rock-n-roll in general cannot be understated. He was huge and deservedly so.
I picked these 5 grooves specifically to help work on the coordination between your kick drum and hi-hat. Neil was great at doing very clean stabs on the hi-hat and to get them really clean and powerful you need to practice. Listen to sound of Neil's hi-hat on these songs and others. It is precise and beautiful. These are the little things that can bring your drumming to another level. There is so much to learn from Neil's playing. He had great passion for the instrument and we can definitely all learn from that.
Cheers!

Just the other day I was watching your GT video on Pat Torpey and wished you would do something like this for Neil’s playing - well here it is! Thank you for this! Your passion for drumming and music in general is truly infectious and your ease and ability to demonstrate and explain various drum parts is awesome!

I discovered Prog Rock with Spock's Beard and don't know much about "classic" bands like Rush. Hearing these grooves, I better understand why Neil Peart is such a revered drummer!

Thanks Nick, absolutely LOVE this video! Neil was the greatest. It always amazed me not just how fantastic his drum parts were, but he was FLAWLESS live. So consistent across hundreds, thousands of shows. Night to night he would just nail every song and he played with such POWER. Man, what a player. You did an awesome job with this video Nick, I really like your playing and stories. 😁

Nicely done, Nick! You too, are a drummer’s drummer! I had read in that era, Neil preferred 13” hi hats because he felt they responded more quickly to his hat work. I think he personified the blending of creativity with precision, and he certainly influenced me in a big way.

Wonderful to hear you playing those great Neil Peart grooves Nick. I remember my older brother bringing home Moving Pictures the day it was released and I was like “whoaaa”. As someone else mentioned before, getting a breakdown of the Weapon from Signals would be amazing.

Thanks Nick, you are a man of your word! Sure wish you could have delved in a little deeper, but I think your idea to throw in multiple grooves was very adequate, a statement on its own. Great analysis on the stabs too

Thanks Nick for posting! I recall hearing '2112' for the first time when it was first released and thinking OMG..who are these guys?? I had the privilege of seeing Rush for their 'Moving Pictures' tour..my brother and I were down on the floor maybe 20 feet from the stage. An amazing show.

Loved your playing but what I loved even more was your insight! Neil was so specific and precise! Loved what you referenced with his playing of the tip on the hi hat rather than the shoulder! I look up to Neil Peart because he’s a drummer that as soon as the playing starts, you know it’s him. Another one is Mike Portnoy. You ever play any of Portnoy’s parts? That would be awesome! Cheers!

Ahh, lazy left hand snare ghost notes. Can relate. But they sound so nice! 😁 Nice job here, Nick. I like your style of playing, quite often because of that lovely ghost note stuff you do, but great to hear you laying down some of the Professor's lines.

Be honest: would you have been able to recognize the song these grooves are from? I mean, just by listening? For me, Subdivisions and La Villa for sure. For the other 3, probably not, unless I was given a hint. A little “name that tune” vibe in this video!

Awesome job, Nick. But. I think the roll at the end of the Subdivisions intro is a single stroke on the snare instead of a double stroke. :-)
@NDVirgilio
@NDVirgilio Год назад
Those are some of those nuanced things in Neil's playing that are hard to figure out. You are probably correct. There is also a flam at the end of the roll that is so hard to do. I bet it is probably easier getting there from the single stroke roll. Good call Speck. Thanks for watching!

My first stretch goal as a new drummer (but not a new musician) is to get Subdivisions down!

You could be without any doubt, a great replacement for Neil ( or any other drummer missed in their band (Foo Fighters?) if Alex and Geedy decide to do another tour. You fit perfectly and above all, knows, understand and respect all the nuances than made Neil’s drumming approach so special. You are a machine and a PRO League’s Pro.

People don't give Neil the due praise for just how groovy he was, just because of the stigma of him being a flashy technique snob.
