I love how this band has so many melodies playing at the same time, not only do you have guitars and singing, but violin and the bass doing it's own thing, and they make it work. My favourite song by them is their self- titled (after the band) "Forget not" from this same album, but I think you should check their newer stuff because their production has gotten much better, "Equus" or "Graal" are great examples from this year's album.

Professor Hindson commented: "I will be presenting 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques. The students will need to study 2 technical aspects of what Ne Obliviscaris have done in their music, and then use these techniques in their own classical music compositions."

My next NeO recommendation would be 'Forget Not', the studio version It's their self-titled track, and it's just beautiful. Judson is right, this song really is hard to process with everything that's going on. There are so many layers, but they make it sound so good. This makes me love this band especially, because every time you listen you end up focusing on a different instrument in different parts of the song. I particularly enjoy focusing on the Bass. They have the bass so hugh in the mix, and their bassist just makes it sing for the whole song. It never gets boring.

As a NeO superfan, I'd say their best stuff is some of the bigger, longer songs, like Painters of the Tempest or Misericorde (both parts, you can't just do one or the other, the song doesn't make sense without being heard as a whole). But, these grander songs will also give you the most stuff to process and will be the hardest to analyse on first listen. So I'd say, for a follow up reaction, when you're just getting into them, I'd go for either Forget Not, Pyrrhic, Tapestry of the Starless Abstract or Graal. It'll be easier to get what they're doing yet nicely encapsulates their style with their tendency to make major transitions between parts of the song.

From Wikipedia: "The standard tuning (from low to high) is F♯, B, E, A, D, G, B, E. Many prefer to tune the F♯ to a low E (E1), the same note as the lowest string on a four-string electric bass in standard tuning, and providing the guitar with a fuller sound by having three different E strings".

Isn't the whole point of "progressive" genres that there is no box to fit in? :D Ne Obliviscaris are the mad scientists of music. This song was included in the curriculum at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. i wonder what the students of classical music thought about it. Probably also took them some time to process. If you want to hear them build this soundscape gradually, I recommend the song "Forget Not" from Portal Of I, or "Eyrie" from Urn. But really you can pick any other song if you want more of the beautiful chaos in your head.
@Bobbias
@Bobbias 10 месяцев назад
I would say it's less about not having a box to put it in (because what is progressive if not a box to put things in?) and more about exploring atypical influences. The majority of rock and metal pull influences from many of the same places, whereas progressive rock and metal tend to pull influences from a wider range of styles.

The same thing with harsh vocals (growling) and vocals can fit so great toghether. Have you done Satyricon - Mother North with Oslo Symphoni Orchestra? Or Dimmu Borgir - Gatewas the live version with orchestra? Something with North in it I guess...

Not matter what y'all pick, Judson is gonna be sitting there a while 😂 I agree with others that Forget Not is really good. Painters of the Tempest I & II together are amazing and overlooked (review wise, critically, whatever). Part II is SO good if you stomach through the beginning as a non-metal enjoyer. Each one of their songs feel like they are alive a bit (in the same way a classical piece might be), in that you may return to an element but it'll be different and presented a bit differently and so a song may be 17 minutes but you never felt like it was, and you never felt like you got stuck in it waiting for it to change.

No joke, I put my Ne Obliviscaris shirt this morning, didn't know why, just felt a pull towards it when I woke up, haha. For my money, I think of NeO as a progressive black metal band as a lot of their early imagery and sounds are pretty close to that, but they've gone further away from it as the albums go and they have really carved out their own space. They are their own sound these days and it's some of my favourite stuff out there. This is actually an interesting discussion that goes on in prog metal circles a lot, the question of whether "prog metal" is a genre unto itself, or if it is just a descriptor for other genres. I think prog metal is it's own genre at this point, but I understand the difficulty in assigning that term, because prog, by nature, borrows from so many things that you can't really call something progressive metal without having to describe that particular band's version of progressive metal right afterwards. I saw NeO live back in 2018 and they are an incredible live show. Every song is such a production and they manage to bring that to the live set fully. My top song from them is "Painters of the Tempest Part II: Triptych Lux" but that one is their longest song to date and is kind of all over the place. I also love "Equus" from their latest album, and it has an incredible video to go along with it. If you're interested in more metal bands that a-typical approache to instrumentation or style then I would highly suggest checking out Native Construct. Their song "Chromatic Aberration" is an adventure unto itself. I would also put Fleshgod Apocalypse up there as for a while there they were messing around in the full symphonic orchestra space and have always been big on multiple vocal styles. "Kingborn" is a great song if you want full on over-stimulation, but their songs "Pathfinder" and "Epilogue" are subtler touches. Also there's a band called Ayreon that you might enjoy. They are closer to Dream Theater in tone, but their style is more retro prog rock band that stumbled into heavy metal. The trick with Ayreon is that all of their albums are big cheesey sci-fi rock operas, and rather than have their own singer, get singers from other bands to come and sing the different characters. A great example of their style is their song "The Day That The World Breaks Down" which also has a fun studio video to go with it as well. Alright, sorry for the wall of text, I love talking music and you guys are a fun hang. Keep it up!

Great vid again guys.. you should check out something from Paul Gilbert's cover of the whole Holy Diver album, playing all of Dio's vocals with his guitar.. he does so surprisingly well, and he captures a lot of the expressive nature of Dio's voice with great guitar tone, and amazing chops..
