I don't know now but they were one of the first metal bands to use Patreon a couple of years ago. I remember their, now former, drummer dan presland posting a photo on Facebook of his resignation letter to his regular job because at the moment he could start living off from the band.
Patreon is a big factor. They have a decent consistent following on there, having started it pretty early-on in 2016. I've given then $5/month for the last 5 years, as have many others. I don't think they're rolling in it, but they make enough to make it work.
Their current bassist Martino has also brought some absolutely incredible basslines to the band, their song Graal (which has a music video and is from their most recent album) is another I recommend for some incredible bass. Glad you checked them out and it was cool to hear your insight, you nailed it with Opeth, that’s definitely one of their inspirations, I hope you give them another look, these guys have no bad songs in my opinion.
@@bradkneale7580 Not to throw shade on the current bass player, but i feel the same. I get why, but its still a shame that the previous bass player had to leave the band.
Both their former (the one in this video) and their current Bass player have playthroughs for some of their songs on their respective channels (@cygnusbass & @MartinoGarattoni)
If you come back to NeO you should check out their new bassist Martino Garattoni. He is a beast as well. The song "Intra Venus" is a slightly shorter song of theirs that has a phenomenal bass solo in it. (I'm seeing them live live later this month :))
Their song Equus has amazing bass lines that are above the other instruments in terms of production. So you can hear them clearly for the whole song. Maybe you should check it when you return to NeO.
I've been watching your videos the past couple months and just realized you played with Scale the Summit. Used to listen to you guys alot when I was in college. Great music to study and do homework to.
last time i listened to this track was years ago, before I started learning bass. so super neat to return to the track and now notice all the neat things the bassist is doing here that I just wasn't paying attention to before. also great discussion of why space is important in bass lines, and something i've never really thought about before.
I am soooo glad you did this song , favourite band , favourite song by them , amazing bass playing....there is a play through too for the original bass player
I will be seeing this band live in November. I don't know much about them, I was mainly going for Beyond Creation and The Omnific, but I am happy to see that their live show will be as awesome ! This band reminds me of Unexpect, they were also a prog band with a lot of band members and stings instruments. My band opened for them a few times, they were very nice. They are not active anymore unfortunately.
@@Vincent_Roy Omnific was fantastic. Make sure to cheer for them extra loud; they're a small band compared to the two giants they're touring with, and their bassists are incredible, and the drummer had a great sense of humor. Talk with them after the show, too. I did, and they were really chill guys
great reaction and analysis. as probably said, this song just has so much depth to analyze (was even taught in an Australian Music University). Dan on drums (who's sadly left the band) what he is doing is incredible and has layers to unpack - 12/8 blast beats, shuffle blast beats. What's also cool to point out is how at 22:49 Tim the clean singer was supposed to start but missed, so after going through the phrase, Dan did a faster double bass part at 23:01 before the high bass notes came in. I imagine the faster bass drum part was one of those centring "ok now we're all together now" cues that bands just have and know when they play as one.
I've heard someone else recommend this but I would love to see you look at something from the band Haken. Their song Carousel has a really nice bass play through video on RU-vid by their bassists Conner Green.
I saw them open for Wintersun, having never heard them prior. They floored me, they were so good. This is why I make sure to show up for every band on a bill, you never know what you could be missing. Glad to see them featured here!
Man I’m so happy about what you mentioned when the guitar is tremolo picking and the bass following in the same pattern but with simple notes. I had this conversation many times with other bass players and the majority of them kept following the tremolo picking.. and I always said basically what you just said about how the notes in the bass need more time to sound with that frequency and how it cuts through the mix. I’m in fact a guitar player. That’s my original instrument. But in one of my bands(we play dissonant death in the styles of Ulcerate, Gorguts, Akercocke) I play bass for 10 years now.. and we have one guitar not two. So basically I have the role of the lead guitar too but with melodies and leads in the bass.. and as guitar player at first I tried tremolo picking parts following the guitar but then I realized that simple notes give more depth to the composition and even creating an atmosphere that a guitar couldn’t. And since then I supported that and I mean that the bass player should try and do something different from the guitar(not all the times but when the part needs it).. I’m so happy that a player and composer at your high level and establishment noticed that and pointed it out. I believe by doing such things you can be a better player and composer.. at least that’s what I saw in me.. And by the way you should check out playthroughs of both Cygnus(who has left the band now) and their new bass player Martino Garattoni. They are both amazing players and to the point composers. You’ll definitely love them both! 😉
Another phenomenal reaction to an amazing band. They're truly a magical experience live. Still hoping for that The Hirsch Effekt reaction! I know they're not as well known as most, but truly talented musicians.
Bands you need to check out Beyond creation- Omnipresent Perception First fragment- Pantheum The omnific- scurryfunge Exocrine- Marlstrom Abiotic- Smoldered Inferi Goreworm- homemade Mortuary Braindrill Blotted science..... There are many more bands I could list but if you check them out you'll be impressed🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘....love your content
Just saw them in tapa on the 10th, and they fucking burned the building down. Alongside The omnific, and beyond creation. I already thought they were the greatest band to grace the earth, and then I experienced it first hand. LITERALLY the greatest band to ever be born and grace the earth. Though Xen wasn't doing the harsh vocals, fucking James Dorton from the Faceless filled in, and their new drummer now, they both fucking killed it. Amazing show and experience, and I can now die happy.
So I love the fuck out of this band and I'm so glad you're looking at their stuff :) They were actually my first live show as a wee Aussie lad -- I had to bring my mum because I was underage hahaha. I'm not sure if you cover it in their video (I just started watching lol) but this song was actually studied by the Sydney conservatorium of music for its composition. There are a ton of great prog metal bands with killer bassists -- it's such a shame that modern mixing and mastering tends to bury bassists.
ALWAYS buy merch. I saw a hardcore band with songs averaging 30 seconds (Pissing Match), and they had $5 blind shirts. One of my favorite band shirts ever.
Cygnus has some great playthroughs on his channel as well. He's an amazing bassist! And NeO is one of my absolute favorite bands ever. So unique, so well packaged and composed.
Finally! I recommended this song a long time ago, thank you for your reaction! Each time I listen this song I discover sth new. I wish they used fretless bass to play it...
NeO is SO good! I like that they still have that organic feel to their music, like it's not overly processed. I caught them with Dissona several years back, it was an amazing show!
My current favorite band. Took over Opeth's spot even though Opeth is still my all-time favorite, but current fav is Ne Obliviscaris. One of the best bands I've ever seen live.
Dang man! I was one of their early fans too in the MySpace days - it's actually how I "met" the band and kept in touch with them as a fan. I later joined in 2012 and stayed until the end of 2016, but this was super cool to hear as I shared the same experience. Ha! Cheers, Zach!
This was absolutely amazing!! You HAVE to check out David Maxim Micic the album “BILO III” it’s so good!! One of the sickest bass tones I’ve ever heard I’ll suggest the song “ smile” since it’s the first one I heard from them, and it would be great for the viewers to dig into but there are songs on it with probably better basslines you HAVE to check them out! Mark!! And ver Vox are absolutely amazing, bad ass and seductive!! 🤘😁 or the song “daydreamers” same album.
Love the channel, some great great reactions and great technical knowledge. Would love to see a breakdown/reaction to "The Great Debate" from Dream Theater, their most underrated song in my opinion.
Wilderun is another really great band. I think they are closer in style to Opeth or the how Opeth would sound today if they kept the death metal vocals.
When I first heard their demo around 2007, I was blown away by this band and raw sound they had. Then they release full album, which was to polished for me. Raw energy was gone. I still listen to them, but without that excitment I had. Nonetheless it is im my top 100 still.
They're in a different metal genre, Unlucky Morpheus has a similar composition but a very different outcome. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RUiRlUGMTwY.html is a good place to start as it's somewhat similar to this song. While in NeO the violin is more to the folk side of things, in Ankimo (as they abbreviate themselves) it's more towards the classical side and is the main driver of the melody.
I’ve been a fan of this band for a while now and I have a sneaking suspicion that the lead guitarist also writes the bass lines. I’m not trying to diminish the talent and skill of the bass players but the bass parts are seamless across the albums.
Fantastic musicianship but the screaming vocals are such a turn off for me.I don’t understand why these types of bands can’t play hard and complex songs with great vocals.
Well... not exactly. Brendan had some serious family problems growing up, including sexual touching. Today he is better and taking care of himself, well since he played with NeO. So yes he had behavioral problems, but can we blame him...
