Steve is older than Neal. He looks a lot younger than he actually is. Steve was 28 when he joined Journey. Neal joined Santana when he was 15, played with that group for a couple of years, then started another band (which disbanded soon) and then Neal started Journey. 3 years later, Steve joined Journey.
I was there. It was in the Meadowlands, in New Jersey. It was my first Journey concert and they are my all-time favorite band. See how mad Steve got? It actually took a little longer than that (or the seconds dragged for me) and I thought they were going to leave the stage and not come back. But Steve turned his back on the audience and took a deep breath and then continued.
Steve was so sexy getting so angry at the guy who threw the bottle. Go Steve..you are the MAN!! Tough tough tough!!! I'm surprised the audience didn't grab the dude and throw him on stage to be mauled! God love Neal and Steve and the band!! They are the best of the best!!
I love this video! Steve had Neal's back and those people r pretty lucky Steve didnt call it quits! Wish i could have seen Journey in their prime! I was only 15 yrs old and to young. Journey is and will allways b my all time favirote band! That is...with StevevPerrry of course.
I saw Journey in 91. 15 yo. Texxas Jam. Bryan Adams, Joan Jett, Sammy Hagar, Santana w/Greg Rolie (I think). Journey headlined. They were all great. I had no clue that Carlos Santana was a legend. Pissed that I went walking around to look for friends instead of watching Santana.
I was at this concert in NJ, remember the moment vividly. The song was from Neal's album Schon & Hamer, No More Lies w/ No More Bottles line by Neal!!! Was F'ing awesome...Still have my stub!
Wow, never thought I would see this question on You Tube. I was there - it was one of the first concerts I went to. We had pretty far seats so I didn't see the bottle hit, but realized what happened when Steve stormed off the stage. Neal TORE IT UP, playing "No More Lies", one of his solo songs done with Jan Hammer, which was well played on MTV at the time and an overall great song. Steve finally came back and resumed playing. Didn't see much else, but never forgot this.
James Gelsleichter yeah I wasn't there but I believe Steve sang back up on either one of Neal's solo albums. it may have been this song or another song off of another album from back in the day...nothing recent.
Someone just wanted to know if anything else was witnessed. Big question WOW! Anytime a band you like is assaulted it is a common reaction to wonder about details.
I bet Steve actually could throw down! Neal is one of my biggest heroes but I actually have more admiration for SP as a dude I think than any of em. He just seems like such a kind, honest, humble, and smart guy.
Agreed. I used to box (for fun) and one of the first thing you learn is to never underestimate your opponent based on how he looks. Just because he's thin doesn't mean he can't hurt you.
Yes and Hetfield from Metallica get hitted by a bottle too but his reaction was a little bit angry ,Neal better than him on everything,Schon Is more versatile this other guys from Metallica are too basic .
miki sixx Neil Schon did not kick Steve Perry out of the band, Steve left of his own accord, firstly to care for his dying mother and second because he had severe hip pain that forced him to stop performing on stage. Please get your facts right before calling people nasty names for things they have not done.
Paula Taylor~that isn't exactly true. You need to get your facts straight before you lecture others about doing so!! Steve has degenerative bone disease that initially struck in his hip area as he was hiking in prep for a tour after "Trial by Fire" & the Grammy nominated song "When you love a woman" was so huge. Steve said he was in more pain than he knew he could feel. To be fair the band did wait for a while, well over a year I believe, but they DID in the end come to Steve with an ultimatum "Get the surgery now..." which requires a huge amount of rehab/effort 4 the patient post op too "...or we are going to replace you w/another singer and tour". Steve told them you can't make a personal decision like exactly when to have/face major surgery & painful rehab by committee. So SP's answer was I'm not ready to face it yet, they did what they said they would & hired Steve Augeri to replace the irreplaceable Perry. Ironically Steve P soon after did have the surgery, he just resented being told "You must now..." I don't blame him & I don't blame the band for wanting to take advantage of their only Grammy nom'ed song & hit album. I guess that was just the way it was meant to be. However, no matter how good the mimic, it's only a mimic of the great Steve Perry. That's why they've had NO new hits since they kicked SP out. This all is fact reported & supported by all parties involved in video interviews/VH1's BTM, etc. very easy to verify.
Paula Taylor, thanks for that.. I was about to say the same. I have been, am and will always be a huge Steve Perry fan. Truth be told, Steve had so much going on emotionally and physically. He was supposed to get surgery on his hips, but would never set a date. Neal did not want to keep waiting and decided to find Steve's replacement. Was there some tension between Steve and Neal, yes.. but in all I would hope that if Steve would of set a date, they might have waited for him. Who knows.. Just would love to have them together again, even if it's one more tour.
Neal Schon was a fukin animal to keep playing and do a solo after that with blood running down his face after getting hit with a beer bottle. True professional. i've seen todays stars walk off stage for a lot less than that. Assholes of this world need the holy living shit kicked out of them especially ones at concerts who try to ruin it for everybody. Journey Rocks!
Jimmy Page had a firecracker explode in his face in Germany in 1980 while he was playing WS/BMS. Man, was Robert pissed. They kept playing though. They made them of hardier stock back then, pre-pussy boy Axl Rose and his pussy bullshit.
Ted Wojtasik~axl rose wishes he was anything like Led Zep, Page, Plant, Perry et al. He is NOTHING like those extremely talented, hard working, consistently true men. He's been a joke for a long time with no credits since their very early success then nothing & I don't see him/them coming back. Not that most would even know b/c axl had/has SO much plastic surgery he doesn't even look like the same person. Think MJ kinda cray overboard crap. I think he lost his mind and/or drugged himself stupid, stupider?
Bob Billings~I think you're giving Schon a bit too much credit with "he's a Fukien animal...". Yes, he was professional as he should've been to all those adoring fans who payed so much money to see the whole show. He was hit & bleeding some, it was horribly wrong! Just saying I think he did what he should've, the show must go on, that IS show business always has been. I loved that Steve really was the one pissed & ready to take on the perpetrator who did it! Wish they'd stayed that TEAM, stronger & better together...
He was definitely p*ssed off that night! So,years later, what did Neal do? Fired him because he wasn't ready to get back on tour when they wanted him to. Herecently had hip surgery and ddin't want to make the trip, so they left without him! (At least, that's the story that I read, anyway!) I saw red as I watched the RNRHOF ceremony last year, and he stood up there, and gave Neal so much praise. Then again, he's better off without them. Less drama. He doesn't need that anymore.
Hmmm makes me wonder now if this had anything to do with or be the reason why my $10 bottle of water was poured into a plastic cup @ the Jrny/def lepp concert last yr in Sacramento? 🤔
I watched Steve Perry fly off the stage in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1986 after someone in the first few rows hit him in the head with a glowstick. The guy in the crowd got a Perry whoopin'.
Natural human reaction. No one should have to put up with that crap on the job. That is their job to perform but not to get hit in the head with a bottle by some jerk
Dream On I've seen a couple people say stuff like that in the comments here. In all honesty why do you feel that way? I get the Perry part but why wouldn't Arnel, Jonathan or especially Ross (who's been with him for 40+ years) not stick up for Neal getting assaulted by a drunk asshat?
Cj Williams The 3 people he now feeds with Steve Perry's legacy....sure....didn't hear them say anything when it actually happened. Perry handled it. Arnel is grateful enough to dive in front of a flying bottle for him
Schon's bandmates (past or present) would have his back. It's a natural instinct to come to the defense of another human being. That is unless you're a total coward.
Too bad Neal didn't have his fro from 78 - that bottle would of bounced right off those curls and straight back at the asshole who threw it . Like a karma boomerang LOL that hair was EPIC!!.... seriously though some people need schooled on proper concert etiquette. Giving or going to a concert should not be life threatening, so not cool. Props to Neal and the guys for handling a tough situation - the show must go on!
So if I hit one of them in the head, and don't want to have a good time. I can join them on stage, and they will show me a good time? Damn, what a deal.
I'm genuinely happy Neal wasn't seriously hurt. I'm not a real fan of Neal, but anyone who throw's anything at musicians are scum! Secondly said bottle chucker deserves criminal prosecution to the full extent of the law. Furthermore, said thrower absolutely deserves a ten to twenty year ban from attending ANY concerts involving any musicians who were on stage when objects were initially thrown at said musicians.
I agree...I think it is disrespectful and dangerous!! I hope the bottle thrower was made to leave the venue. He shouldn't be allowed to ruin it for the others that was there to enjoy the Journey concert!!
emotional for me to watch something like this steve watching out for neal asking if hes ok when something like this happens i would have swore and then some i tend to take things more extrem and would start fist fighting one would not want to cross me and injure a loved one swearing is nothing thats minor brothers watch out for each other there is love here
Had a whiskey bottle that was thrown from the nose bleed section hit my husband's knee at a Van Halen concert. He was cut and bleeding so we missed 3/4 of the show...and tickets weren't cheap. Just glad the bottle hit his knee instead of the back of head of the girl sitting in front him. It would have been really bad if that had happened. Really hate these drunks who ruin for the rest of us.
Yeah, What's wrong with people????? Throwing shit that is going to hurt someone! I was at Zeppelin in 1977, someone throws a booze bottle from upper level. Thank god it just crashed right at our feet !...... AND THROWING IT AT THE BAND?? !!! .... That''s REALLY F-uped !!!....I hope the got whoever this was and banded their ass from the venue permanently !!!
Yeah, let's take the magic circle and point it at Neal's head, as if the REST of us didn't know where to look in the FIRST place!!!!! BTW I didn't know Tom Arnold was a crew member in 1983!
He's a fantastic day guitar player really enjoy when he is on that guitar I'm glad he was not injured badly and the show went on and kudos to all of them
To be fair, he was in his right to be angry. At Taylor Swift’s show, the fans were throwing friendship bracelets at her; she could’ve lost an eye because of people being stupid. It’s sad how people don’t know how to act at concerts.
Never thought he could be a sure in..hands down member of guns n roses..hahaha..hes one hell of a tough guy!..if thats guns..axl would have thrown hmself at the audience and let this bottle thrower have it...
jacob weithman I was an 11 year old Journey fan once... around 1998... never got to see them with Steve Perry but it never stopped my love for em. SO before anyone decides to troll this kid like there's no tomorrow with "Lurn2 speel" comments, give him a break. He's got killer taste in music
How messed up it is to throw a solid object like that at speed could kill somebody or blind them take their eye out who knows get hit with the bottle the wrong spot you're dead
