In this conversation Ralph Cree talks to Hareesh about his book ‘Near Enemies of the Truth: Avoid the Pitfalls of the Spiritual Life and Become Radically Free’
Have you ever been told, “You create your own reality”? Have you been encouraged to “be your best self” or “follow your bliss”? Nowadays these slogans are everywhere, but what if they’re doing more harm than good? After over thirty years as a scholar-practitioner of meditation and Tantric philosophy, acclaimed author Hareesh (Christopher Wallis) explores the most widespread distortions of spiritual teachings present in our world today. Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, his book uncovers why these oft-heard platitudes are “near enemies” to the truth, often detour us off the spiritual path, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

Hey,I am a teen trying to learn about Trika Tantra,I want to dedicate my life to it but as I am not fortunate enough to find a Guru,I consider Divine Mother herself as my Guru and walk on the path of self-realization. I want to meet you once in my life and receive the profound knowledge of Shaivism from you🙏 There are more people like me that need guidance from you,so please don't stop blessing us with your wisdom🙏

This was a great and insightful conversation--thank you! I like the idea of syncretic meditation practice, which some teachers are already doing. It's in line with what philosopher Thomas Metzinger has proposed--to make a contemplative practice (including training in stable attention and insight) part of (secular) life, preferably starting at school age through programs that are publicly funded. It's likely going to be a ground-up effort that may not come to fruition in our life time, but it's never too early to get started.

PS: I'm only a few dozen pages in, but your new book is excellent--skillfully evokes discomfort that draws attention to areas that really need some light and care.

Thank you for your work. A video about how to find a guru equivalent in western society (germany in my case) would be helpful or why it is near impossible to find a guru and what to do if one cant be found. I have found a mix of people for different areas of existence but I find it almost impossible to find a personal spiritual teacher who has the knowledge and the personal relationship knowing me to be able to give me personal spiritual advice.

It's definitely possible. Just start following a teacher who you find particularly compelling, and go to their retreats, and get close enough to them to have a relationship.

During my yoga teacher training I had several seminars with a direct disciple of swami satyananda from the bihar school with a strong tantric influence. I will further deepen that connection and also stay conncected with your work. Thank you.

I like to think of "the path" as the path of "awakeness" as one human species. If you take an analogy of making bread there are tons of different flavors/consistencies depending on what kind, what flavor you want, which culture you grew up with, which preference the person likes, sweet bread, sourdough, flat bread, etc. but it's all still considered bread at the end. It's a very simple analogy that one could find tons of holes in but it still works to explain the "path of awakeness" or the mystical path is another term for it. But like you said, we're still at the very infancy stage of it.

Wonderful interview, and a great service to clarify these popular semi-truthful/semi-distorted slogans with pointers to the deeper meanings. I was intrigued by your discussion of evolution and syncretism. Regarding the latter, I wonder if you know of Vivekananda's statement regarding this, to the effect that one day, each human being will have their own "religion." That is, each on a truly unique but genuine awakening path, based in wisdom, not dogma or intellectual belief. At the same time, it would be understood as one universal dharma, though not necessarily with the "same" "ending" point, as the Reality is Infinite and can be known and realized in Infinite ways. These ways are not conflicting or merely supporting each other, but in a paradoxical way, varied ways of fully knowing the "same" (?) Infinite reality. Regarding evolution, this is especially interesting to me because I've been associated with the IY (integral yoga of Sri Aurobindo) community for several decades. My sense is within my own community there is an overemphasis on the Shakti (the dynamic, ever changing Conscious-Energy) and at times almost a rejection of the allegedly "static" Siva ("Pure" Conscious-Being or Chit-Sat) aspect of Reality. IY speaks of a "supramental" consciousness which is affecting the collective evolution of consciousness. But both Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa (aka the Mother) often teased their students saying "Don't even MENTION the "S" word until you've become fully liberated, fully enlightened," that is - stably rooted in pure Consciousness and so utterly established in Samata, equanimity, that all your actions, energy, emotions and thoughts are fully integrated with your radiant True Nature." Put in simpler language, don't talk about "evolution" until you've fully integrated your realization. I think in that context, understanding that the "evolution" Sri Aurobindo points to is so far beyond our mind, that even to talk about it occurring in "time" is to mistake our current "mental" understanding of time for what would inevitably be a radically different reality of time and space, if there really was some kind of long term (they spoke of several thousand years before any clear external effects of this supramental descent could be recognized) evolution.

Interesting discussion about syncretism. It reminds me of the work of Jeffrey Martin who has interviewed people who have experienced 'persistant non-symbolic experience' and has 'mapped' the process with four locations. He put together a collection of practices to facilitate anybody 'transitioning' (as he puts it) to this experience. I'm pretty skeptical as I align more with the NST view you teach, however, i am curious to know what you think of his locations - esp location 4 which is described as a stage where you lose all emotion and gave the example that you lose the love for your own child. My understanding of NST is that is world embracing and includes, for example, the love of one's child. Curious to hear your thoughts on this Hareesh

This is a bit too subtle and nuanced to get into here. Can you give me a link to a description of the four locations you speak of?
