Hi, this song is about Jacob in the Bible, after he "stole" Esau's birthright and ran away. That night when he lay his head upon a rock to sleep, angels descended upon "Jacob's Ladder" and God reaffirmed his same promise that He made to Abraham and Isaac. He named the place Bethel, which means "House of God".
In the Old Testament, they erected "stones of remembrance" to signify an important event or act of God. We should do the same and erect stones to remember the acts of God in our lives.
