NEC Projector Dynamic Contrast Error Fix

This is possibly the most boring video I've ever made because it's instructional and applies to very few devices. But the Dynamic Contrast error, that NEC projectors are prone to, is a pain in the arse so hopefully it's worth it. The error prevents the projector from starting up at all and is really fiddly to fix, but can be done (and it's free). The alternative is getting the projector repaired by an official service centre, which is probably going to be more expensive than buying a new projector in many cases.
The projector featured in this video is the M230X, but should also apply to other projectors that use a similar iris assembly.
Big respect to Philip Tan for the blog post linked below, which is an excellent written guide. This video guide is intended as a video complement, as I needed to dig deeper than the detail described in the blog post in order to fix my problem.

Thank you so much. My wife bought this projector used, for her class. She is a teacher in a small, not too rich school here in northern Finland. The seller apparently scammed us because the projector was not working and he did not respond us after the transaction. The projector had this exact same issue, and with the help of your precise, well explained guide I actually got it to work. My wife is so happy and the huge disappointment turned to joy. And the students will benefit too! I honestly can not praise your effort enough. Thank you so much.

Thanks heaps from Wollongong Australia! Mine was a P350W, but it did the exact same problem. Tried to turn on, made the ticking noise for about 5 seconds, shuts the lamp down, then the Status LED flashes 9 times, pauses & repeats, etc. Didn't take the Dynamic Contrast assembly apart, just removed it & spayed it liberally with Contact Cleaner & Lubricant (from Jaycar). Before spraying, the little metal shutters were hard to manually open and close. After spraying, very easy to open and close. Worked first time after reassembling. Just think of all the landfill this one video has saved on NEC projectors.

We should all buy this guy a beer or something because I too was able to fix my home projector (M300X)! Gears had resistance and were clicking loudly when I got into the iris mechanism- a little grease seemed to do the trick! Thanks so much for uploading this video! Cheers!

I've never fixed anything like this before, but your video is so clear and concise that even an amateur like myself was able to follow along with knowledge and confidence. My projector is now up and running again for my whole family to enjoy and I cannot thank you enough dude. It's my kid's cartoons and films which they have really been missing and I can't wait to see their faces in the morning. Thank you so much!! If you're ever in Portsmouth, several pints will be on me. Huge thanks for this tutorial/fix. It's so well explained and "over-engineered" is a bloody understatement, haha. It's actually ridiculously so. Thank you so much dude.

Boring??? Absolutely not! This is a fantastic video. Very detailed and methodical. Looks to me like there's a bit of "shellac" build-up on the various capstans --I'm guessing the lubricant deteriorated b/c of elevated temperatures in that area. Perhaps a dental pick would be a better choice for working with those springs. Thank-You for an excellent presentation!!!!

Brilliant video - I fixed my projector and it’s working again. When I got down to the complicated lens part I didn’t dismantle it. I simply undid the two little screws half a turn and then moved the movement a bit until it felt it was moving freely. Re-assembled it and everything now working!

@@BrassicGamer I used silicone spray to lubricate the mechanism for 2 reasons - (i) it meant I did not need to dismantle the mechanism and (ii) the projector is installed upside down so I think the silicone will stick to the surfaces better and not run into any other part unlike oil.

Very detailed video, nice. I have collected a few of these projectors (around 8 or so) all have this issue, except on every single one the motor gear has a hairline crack in it making it click against the next gear, tried a selection of different glueing techniques but none seem to have been successful so far, will next try filing the motor shaft ever so slightly and heat mounting the gear so it isn't forced apart as much. (Already cleaned and lubed the mechanism with wd40)

Worked for me.... After 3 hours of work, my projector is working again. The big struggle for me : taking off the cables (without breaking them). Too hard that was. I was using a tweezer but even with that, it wasn't easy. I don't understand why it looks so easier for you to do it. Thanks!
@BrassicGamer

Maybe because I wasn't worried about breaking them. You could call that confidence or a lack of caution, but I guess that's down to the person doing the repair. I'm glad you did it successfully though!

Mine moves freely when the motor is out. The motor itself moves freely also. But when the motor is in about three spots in the full sweep of the iris, the gears seem to bind. I've inspected every tooth in the gear, but I can't seem to find which would cause it to bind up.
@BrassicGamer
@BrassicGamer 4 года назад
After my first attempt at repairing mine, I considered removing the linkage between the clutch gear and the aperture and then manually setting the iris to open. The small gear would then move freely with the motor, triggering the optical sensor, but the iris would stay open. It could be worth removing it anyway to see what effect it has.

Hey all, I have the same issue and found a video from FixItFrank with this problem detailed. It's likely that the gear connected to the motor is cracked. We might all need to just buy another iris assembly if we can't find the motor as a replacement part or somehow repair the drive gear.

I did this, and it worked! Unfortunately the lamp exploded about 10 minutes later, any idea if there's something I could have done wrong to cause this or was it just bad timing?
@BrassicGamer
@BrassicGamer Год назад
Hard to say, as I've not experienced that myself. I doubt it was related to overheating because, even if the fan was disconnected, it should have cut out if it got too hot. And I would think that if the thermistor was faulty or disconnected then the projector wouldn't function. I see why you would rather know why - replacing the bulb only for it to explode again would not be a desirable outcome. I'm glad the repair worked, though.
@Motorman2112
@Motorman2112 Год назад
@@BrassicGamer I've replaced the lamp and it's been running for a few hours with no issues. If it wasn't just unlucky timing my best guess as to how I could have caused it is that overlubrication of the iris mechanism may have lead to a spot of oil being flicked off onto the lamp once it warmed up and became less viscous. I don't think this is particularly likely but it's the best I can come up with. I did clean a bit of the lubricant off it before installing the new lamp, so who knows... The previous lamp was 10 years old so it may well just have been a coincidence.

Yes, if the motor works okay and you set the reflectors open, you can remove the plastic piece that links the two together. The optical sensor must provide the 'on' 'off' signal.

Can we bypass iris ?
@BrassicGamer
@BrassicGamer 3 года назад
That's a good question and it's something I considered. But the answer is quite technical, so apologies in advance for the menu words. Theoretically you could disconnect part of the link between the tiny motor and the metal 'wings' that form the iris. The wings could then be moved manually into the open position permanently, and the motor would turn freely. We know that there is a sensor detecting movement near the motor, so that part needs to stay connected. The only question is whether there is also a sensor detecting the amount of light being let through the iris. If so, the iris cannot be bypassed.
@ijazahmed618
@ijazahmed618 3 года назад
@@BrassicGamer the bypass worked . :) but now the picture have yellow lines on all screen:( . And i have other NEC which has steady blinking red power light not status its power button. Can you help whats thats mean ?
@BrassicGamer
@BrassicGamer 3 года назад
@@ijazahmed618 are the lines vertical or horizontal? Usually that's related to the LCD panels, or one of them. What I would do in that situation is disconnected the LCD ribbon cables and then connect only one LCD at a time, to work out which one is causing the problem. If the lines are present on all, then it's a processing error (electronics). As for the red light, I would find the service manual and start there.
