Necromunda Ash Wastes: The Best Necromunda Set Yet? 

Was never a fan of necromunda until I played a game with my nephew and now it’s my favourite game mode

What a gem to find 🤩, been hesitating buying this but this review has answered all my questions I had about the set like how the terrain interchanges. Thank you 👏

Me and my childhood friend have been running a campaign over almost the past year. It gives us a reason to meet up and put being adults aside.

Just assembled a set of the ash wastes terrain and I'm very impressed. So many sub builds that can be assembled without gluing, modularity is awesome.

Thanks UH for this complete run-down of Ash Wastes. This is the first GW box set in quite some time that has inspired me enough to actually buy it. I spend very little hobby money with GW these days. The latest KT releases have been lazy and boring, and the rules mess and expense for AoS and 40k means I have picked up other games (Core Space and OnePageRules). Big shame that in a $475 AU box that the board is paper, and not card based like KT and Warcry - mean and cheap if you are reading, GW, and you'll have to do better for any future purchases from me. But kudos for the great and inspired scenery Cheers to you, UH, for the most thorough review of this box that I've seen.

Great review. Just found your channel, and subbed :) Nice close up of the terrain. I was on the fence about this, but i think I'm now "in" on it. Two questions - 1) what do you use on the bases to make them look like mud/dirt, and 2) any idea if the terrain will match up with existing Necromunda terrain?

Regarding the two different kinds of "sockets" of the building pillars, I guess they made them different so that ppl can not mix them as in ups I put this one upside down now. Besides that, great channel, just stumbled upon it and subbed. Thaks for the variuos aids made available on BGG. 🙂

How will this work out? The range/vision/cover etc? Looks like a huge open area. Are there sandstorm that obscure or give cover?

I have a good pile of Necromunda minis and terrain and this set is £180rrp in the UK (and I have Orlocks already). It has far fewer sprues than Dark Uprising (13v20) and that was £175 I think, but I passed on that as I already had MDF hive walls. I do like the new terrain (having seen it built) but I think this box should have been more focussed on vehicle combat as mooted, not a camp/village with just a couple of quads and (frankly) barely the rules to cover them. A basic set of gang rules in the back of the assembly instructions is a bit of a low punch in all honesty. If it had had a couple of medium-sized cars/buggies and some bikes and a FULL rulebook of vehicular rules I would have been all-in, but I don't think £180 (£144 online 20% off) for this is a good buy for me, but I enjoyed the vicarious experience of your unboxing sir, enough to watch it twice last night on the big TV. The idea of buying this, then having to get a hardback vehicle book (very probably as the Ash Wastes rulebook alludes to other rules) and maybe an A.W. Nomad Gang book, then starting a run of buying expensive truck/buggy models..... Hmmm. I just checked and I already have 2 softback & 5 hardback Necromunda books (with one more on the way!). I love the Nomad minis (& ticks) and I do like the look of the upcoming land train, but I think (for now) I'm going to wait and see as I feel GW really want to limit the value/savings of these boxes nowadays, compared to 2 or 3 years ago. PS: Did you get your Dark Uprising set on the table Peter?

Ash Wastes seems to be just Gorkamorka reimagined. Love it!

I really like the vehicles from Wargame Exclusive. Some consider them to be too small but I don't think so. If you measure them and consider they are supposed to be 1:56 (28mm) you realice they actually are sized the same as our current vehicles... ;-) I got 4 vehicles so far and definitely will get more.

As a graphic designer, it infuriates me no end that they still haven't addressed the legibility issue with the Necromunda rulebooks. I can imagine when it was first designed that the layout looked fine and perfectly readable on a screen. But as soon as they got the proofs back, any studio manager/creative director would have said to knock the background back a touch or beef up the font weight because it is painful to try and actually read. Even if they initially signed off on digital-proofs and didn't realise until the first print run turned up, you would still make the effort to fix it for future prints... Yet here we are 5yrs later, still stuck with it.

It's interesting when people get specific about how 40k words 'should' be pronounced. It seems to me that, in-lore, the galaxy is so huge, with so many billions of different accents and ways of speaking amongst the millions of worlds, that almost any pronunciation will be correct somewhere. Even within the one main hive of Necromunda there will be some people who say Necromoonda.

The terrain is dope, but ye gads, I saw a discounted pre-order cost of over $400 here in Australia, so that's a hard pass from me.

Models look nice, except the insectoid crawlers, but the lack of complete rules for all gangs in the ash wastes and the lack of generic vehicle rules makes it a poor offering IMHO
