I waited until they were on clearance at Toys R Us and picked one up with a bunch of games for real cheap. It was interesting but too many offerings on the market that had my attention when it came out. Didn't get motion sickness, did get some headaches with certain wireframe games. Shaded games like Wario Land were easier on my then teenage eyes.

Last time I played a VB was at a tailgate party in summer 1998. Spent 30 minutes playing Wario, and got a VB visor-shaped sunburn in the Texas heat. I looked like an albino racoon for the next two weeks. Haven't touched a Virtual Boy since...

I had gotten my Virtual Boy along with every American game released for it , along with a nice nifty padded briefcase to hold and cradle my console for storage or transport. Blockbuster home video store had sold all there Virtual boy stock at super cheap previously viewed prices and that day they had a special buy 3 previewed items get 1 free so I got everything super cheap. And I loved it and couldn't wait for more games that never came . All in all I loved my Virtual boy system. Wish I still had it.

My best friend had one, and he lived across the street. We'd play it all the time. I didn't really notice that it was shit at the time. I was really young. But thinking back, we did move on pretty quickly. Relatively speaking.

I really love how you have all this nuance and explain how things that have been hated on can actually still be cool and still be good. I also love how you mentioned that in the AVGN video of the virtual Boy from 2008 he does express some positive opinions of a few games although the irony is you're showing him talking smack about water world in the footage you chose but it's awesome anyway

My only experience with the Virtual Boy was playing a demo unit at a Best Buy back in the day. I'm pretty sure I played that flight game. It was kinda hard to play since everything was just red lines and I wasn't sure what was a wall. It was a novel experience, but I think my vision was messed up after playing for a few minutes. Based on that experience, I can't say it was a great system. I can't imagine playing it for more than a few minutes at a time. It was certainly unique and innovative and deserves to be remembered. But I certainly can't call it anything close to a hidden gem like say the Vita or Neo Geo.

As I remember it, pretty much most of the library came with mandatory 'take a break' notices. And I do remember that shooter. The VB could do 'solid' walls. So I don't know why they went with 'solid glass' for barriers. It made the game really hard to play without memorizing the levels through trial and error. Still, a decent number of these game are worth playing. Just not on the original hardware.

Very enlightening, great job. The only problem with their logic in the library design and consumer scope is that they priced it as though it was a next gen console when you could pick up a snes for less than $100...

This is quickly becoming the best gaming history channel. I remember trying it at Toys R Us and thinking it was half-baked. It just didn't feel like a big enough leap in technology. I was ready for actual 3D polygon graphics, so the Virtual Boy just didn't feel like it was worth it.

I think Nintendo simply misjudged what players expected from VR "3d" at the time. People didn't think 2D pixel art with depth was "3d". People expected first person with vector graphics, and perhaps polygons. This wouldn't have required N64 level hardware. Even without any graphics chip processing, a slow 68000 CPU alone was able to produce smooth vector graphics for a game like Star Wars (Atari ST). The much faster CPU in the Virtual Boy would have chewed through vector wireframes much faster. See Star Wars on the X68000 to see what wireframe vector graphics could do at the time. It would have looked stunning on the Virtual Boy. The big problem is that Nintendo did not have much experience with developing that sort of 3D game. It's a completely different workflow for 3D modeling artists vs pixel artists.

I traded 9 SNES games plus $80 of birthday money for the Virtual Boy. I was so unbelievably disappointed. Some of the games I traded were Mario Allstars, MegaMan X, Final Fantasy 2, 3, Super Metroid, and Link to the Past. Boxes and booklets with them as well. I still have that stupid Virtual Boy. It's been at my parents' place for decades. Once the 64 came out... it never left my parents' basement

I've had one since '95 or so, got a bundle when it went on clearance as a young gamer... I have fond memories of Mario Clash and especially Wario Land; ...but it really is uncomfortable to play a real console. Usually this kind of hype gets inflated on the internet, but man, this thing HURTS your eyes and leaves you with a nice sized headache after an hour or so. I believe i was the first person ever to stream the console on Twitch in 2015, shoving an analog camera down one of the eye ports, using grayscale mode, and shooting it out to my CRT / stream setup! Capture cards exist now, but man, those were fun streams!

I’m very disappointed the Virtual Boy didn’t take off. I was one of its biggest fans. I read all that I could about it before it was released and then rented one from Blockbuster the moment it was available. I loved it. It was a really immersive video gaming experience, like playing games on a huge TV at a time when a 27” CRT was about as big as most gamers got. I bought my own system as soon as I saved enough money. My top 3 games were Teleroboxer, Warrio Land, and Panic Bomber. It was a big bummer when I saw the system and all of its games on clearance less than a year later. On the plus side it allowed a kid like me to buy just about every game released in the US, but really I’m sad that there weren’t more released.

I grew up with Nintendo and still to this day have absolutely no interest in adding a virtual boy to my collection. There is something about it. It is clunky, uncomfortable and hurts my eyes after an hour. However I do have a few games that I unintentionally bought at a yard sale years ago. A lady was selling all her kids old Xbox stuff and wanted like $50 for a big box when I realized they put virtual games in there I went back and offered another $50 she said no she wanted to get rid of it so I gave her an extra 20.00.

I actually had a VB when I was younger. Some of the games were pretty good, I liked Wario World and Mario Tennis. The downsides are of course the consoles hampered portability, how it drained batteries, how it did cause neck strain and was so likely to cause eye strain there was a freaking warning about long usage. It was an interesting idea but a flawed execution.

I got mine, with a Blockbuster carry case, for $30. I bought a bunch of games on clearance for $6 a piece. And you know what? I LOVED the Virtual Boy. OK, it was NOT virtual reality. It was really just very good 3D. I still play my Virtual Boy today, though it apparently makes some people nauseated in addition to giving them headaches. I picked up a VB several years ago at a yard sale for $5. It's not something I play a lot but I never thought it was a terrible system. My only complaint is the difficulty in setting it on something at the correct height so I don't have to sit stooped over. It's never given me headaches. Never got motion sickness with it either, which I tend to be prone to. I can't play 98% of modern games. So it definitely got a bad rap from the beginning. If it hadn't been for that idiotic liability clause, or more accurately, jerks that will file lawsuits over the slightest thing to try to scam money from anyone they can, the VB might have fared far better than it did.

I had to sell my game collection - which included my Virtual Boy and all its games - about 13 years ago. *Still, let me share my experiences:* *1) No headache, ever.* Using my Virtual Boy for prolonged periods (and ignoring instructions to take a break) had no additional ill effects versus "normal" gaming. The only drawback was super mild; you know that sensation when you leave a darkened theater and step out into sunlight? Yeah, I'd experience that when I'd stop playing. *2) Don't use the recommended orientation.* Dunno if it was "safe" for me or my console, but I would play the Virtual boy by lying down on my bed. The stand is shaped as such that it does a _decent_ job of stabilizing the console, though results may vary based on body type. My stand eventually broke (don't know if it was stupid teenager stuff or because of how I used it), but at that point, but I usually could play it just fine while in bed. *3) It's battery life is attrocious; get the AC Adapter!* I'm not sure if it is as bad as the Sega Game Gear, but yeah; the Virtual Boy quickly eats through six AA batteries. If you're in the market for a VB, make sure you can get the AC Adapter. _Small Perk:_ while the part that attaches to the controller is specific to the Virtual Boy, the actual cord/plug is the same as the SNES. *4) There are some very good, maybe even **_great_** games.* I can't speak for every game released on it, as there were several I never played, let alone owned, but Wario Land was great. Mario Tennis and Vertical Force were very good. Teleroboxing, Galactic Pinball, and Red Alarm were more "regular good". YMMV depending on personal tastes. Red Alarm *does* take some getting used to, and I'm not normally a fan of this style of game. I've heard good things about some of the rarer and/or Japan-exclusive titles as well. The worst thing about the Virtual Boy is its mixture of being incomplete and under-supported. They never released the link cable, and that's a shame because most of the games I listed above would have been great in 2-player. It's practically a crime that we didn't get entries into various popular Nintendo IPs of the day. With how Link's Awakening turned out on the Game Boy, I know a Zelda title could have been killer. Mario Kart, Metroid, and Star Fox probably would have suited the system. As for non-Nintendo stuff, a "dungeon crawler" RPG or First-Person Shooter could have been fun. Crude, yes, but still fun. I know demaking Doom or even Wolfenstein 3D probably was never in the cards, but the perspective and color scheme...

The gamers that used the Virtual Boy in the mid 90s probably have some back and neck issues if they would try it now.

@@retro5014 If I was unclear, when I said to play it laying down, I meant on your back, in a comfy position. XD Even when I would play it while sitting, I'd make sure to place the Virtual Boy on a stack of books (usually GURPS books) to elevate it to a more comfortable position. *Note:* I do have some back issues, but that's because I've been fat for my whole life. It _was_ uncomfortable to play it the way we saw in the video, even as a tween. Hence me working out the two alternate approaches I just described. :)

@@KamisamanoOtaku Nah you are good and made a good reply. My only thing was that those kids in the 90s were indestructible cause they are youthful and neck problems aren't a thing for them however if those kids from the mid 90s tried it today in 2023 they would likely feel some pain they didn't feel back then. :)

@@retro5014 Ah. Well, I would have been a tween around the time the Virtual Boy released, so I was doing this until my late 20s. Maybe I couldn't handle it today. XD

I had one for years. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it used batteries and didn't come with a plug.

It would be cool if som3eone created a Virtual Boy emulator that worked with nVidia 3D vision glasses, or VR.

play the game, see red... step away from the machine see red and green and the real world... but you may think about the game later and know how much fun you had.

Lucky owner, or perhaps unlucky. Wario Land and Jack Bros. the best games on the console. Other than that, it’s just a cool showpiece on my shelf.

I remember wanting one of these... I played one at the local Toys R us and thought it was cool, but then it went away before I was able to get one. I get why it was disliked, but I still thought they were cool. Now they are too expensive to try to get.
