Also, the fact that Negan keeps saying he doesn't kill kids. Eventhough Jesus said he killed a 14 year old boy with Lucille in front of the Hilltop back in season 6 ep 11. And was about to kill Carl in the season 7 finale. The writers were trying too hard make Negan as villainous as possible, and forgot the fact that he is supposed to be redeemed in the end.

In the comics it is made plain & clear that Negan has sex with his "wifes". When Carl hides in the transporttruck & afterwords kills a bunch of Negans henchmen...Well Negan is impressed & tries to convert Carl to his point of view. He brings Carl up the rooms were his wifes live & flat out states: "Well I always wanted to fuck a buch of chicks & now I can. I am the leader & they need me to provide for them". I mean that fits with the whole narrative of him being a stone cold narcissistic psychopath. Negan is very, very clearly just that, a rapist & also a sadist whom guts & torments people with his "Iron" whilst he loves it...The problem is not any of these things. Negan as such a villain is a GREAT character. However you cannot redeem him. That is the problem. It simply breaks the suspention of disbelief for anybody. A guy who bashed in the head of completely innocent people for no reason & all of the things meanioned above... You cannot credibly write him into being a hero all of a sudden...It is just awfull story telling. It is basicly the case of there is Negan 1 great adversary. Then Negan 2 whom is a comletely different person for no believable reason. BAD story telling is what that is
@grungeg7086
@grungeg7086 2 года назад
absolutely. not enough time has passed, and not enough context was given to why he did the sick, sadistic shit he did for it to be a proper redemption arc. Take for example Jamie Lannister in GoT (let's forget the undoing in S8 lol), his redemption arc happened over the course of many seasons, and his kingslayer title was given context, and could even be seen as noble. With Negan, we're supposed to just forgive him cuz he ran after Judith in a snow storm and helped Lydia. Great, he loves kids 🙄 The alpha killing shouldn't even count, cuz he did it for self gain, not altruism. As you said, sloppy writing.
@Espinozaize

@@grungeg7086 Yeah in that regard I actually find the King Slayer insult a bit absurd. Aerys Targarian had placed Wildfire beneath the entire grounds of Kings Landing so that he could kill not only himself but the entire population. I mean this must have been known by the council & also you could go down there & just see that to be the case. If Jaime had not done what he did, then the capital would have been destroyed & the entire population would have burned alive. Why is he not a hero then?? When there is ample evidence for his claims? I found that aspect to be a little hard to believe given that Jaime saved the lives of every single council member & Kings Guard with solid clear evidence...Why do they insult him for that. It is a little bit ridicules

You can't say well in the comics he did this and try to justify a claim in the show , In the comics the women seem to enjoy the power negan gives them and with Dwight the girl he loved completely change because of the luxury of that power. The show and comic are very different Also while the comic and show try to redeem him that is mostly for us so we can root for him while in both in show and comic most people hate his guts (Spoiler) Negan in the comics version ended up alone and old in a worn down house outside the city with only Carl visiting him.........how is that a happy ending or a character redeem It's bit rush in the show but tell me who in the main cast actually likes negan? They just use him so they can further their own goals without or little respect Your are mistaking peace with quite, they will work with negan with most of them not trying to kill him or shit talking You can work with people you don't like but if you don't show at least some respect or else don't be surprised when they are your only Chance and leave you to the dogs

That is how I will describe the situation that his wives are in...Why do they let this person live?? That is absurd. @@Espinozaize it's not that simple It's been years since the zombie apocalypse started and in both the comic and show deny it all you want but Rick was a dictator as much as negan He had absolute power over anyone, sure he might be nicer about and is a bit more fair And people are happy with him in charge but it's the same thing and you wanna know how this whole thing began? Agreeing with no info or asking basic questions that more the 30 people lives are worth some fruits and vegetables....... Rick sees this and wants to be better for not only himself but for his people so they decided to lock negan away and try to be a more democracy with multiple leaders but guess what negan escape and he single handle beat the alpha that cause so much trouble and who killed dozens of innocent people. Now let's say you do kill him after what he did, he would be look as a Marty and you would look like a cruel leader who kills people he doesn't like dispite their good deeds So banishment was what they decided and alot of people hated this but respected Rick enough to follow through but some couldn't and left

I feel like if they insisted on going down the Negan redemption line, they shouldn't have made him so unredeemable and evil in season seven, or if they were going to do that then they shouldn't have gone the redemption line. It seems they have taken a third option where they redeem him by retconning some of his story. Thanks for making this video man, so many people have forgotten about this. The 'wives' conspired to kill Negan through Eugene. Most of their interactions with him are filled with fear and/or hatred in their eyes iirc. Why would the harem be like this if he was just 'talking their ears off'? Smacks of revisionism: to make Negan's transition from heel to face smoother, and because we live in more sensitive times (even than a few years ago, and especially with the socio-political direction this franchise has taken since then).

if i had to guess because they regretted making their deal. Just a thought. this video wants us to forget about how he despises sexual violence 😂. Wants us to forget that rick and Darryl defied neagan, got multiple chances, and built an empire from nothing. The catalyst of his true violence leading to his capture was.... Rick attacking an outpost that was relatively innocent, neagan was berating people jeapordizing peace ironically, and the attack pissed him off because the villian felt bad and wanted peace.... then he said fuck that. He gave all of them an option. They consistently made it worse.. The govenor is a true rapist and I'd imagine many more worse than him are waiting if those women wanted to give up their high status that they knowingly signed up for.. He doesn't have to give insulin away. To recruits, not friends. They were all recruits and offered a place that worked to ensure survival. It's like the government, but he has more of an excuse to be a sadist and he still walks the line of humanity by being the most reasonable person. Especially compared to Rick who got everyone killed. All they had to do was realize they weren't the best. I'd imagine neagan would've given them decent authority to keep up their ego as well.

In the comics, Negan is still a scumbag, but his wives are just women who'd rather not pull their weight, than people who were there because he coerced them. As someone who stopped watching TWD shortly after Negan was introduced (I think I ducked out after season 7), it is absolutely WILD to hear that the writers have since tried to redeem him. Between all the violence and the "wives" and just EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MAN, I cannot imagine a world where it would actually make narrative sense to even try to redeem him - he was clearly designed to be a sadistic, uncaring psychopath.

Frankly, it never made sense to me why Rick kept Negan alive at the end of season 8, except for the fact that it was done in the source material. His behavior for 2 seasons should have resulted in his death from Rick, based on the established character traits from all the previous seasons of TWD. I get that the show needed him alive since Andrew was leaving the show, but it’s taken me up until season 11 to really care much for his character. And I’m glad he is still around now, but at the time, it just didn’t make sense, with how evil his character had been portrayed.

I love how Rick and the group brutally killed their way to that hill where Negan was in the season 8 finale. The second Rick gets a chance to kill Negan he decides not to kill anymore. Just an interesting thought. I wouldn’t blame Maggie for killing Negan even though he’s grown on me. It’s easy to forget what he did at this point but if you go back and watch it, it would be completely justified. I think too much time has gone by at this point though. Great video! Negan is an excellent character (mainly after S8) but a terrible person who has not changed very much. His wives are one of his worst sins but his most overlooked. Even some of the good things he did are either ideal situations or badly timed. Saving Judith was pretty convenient. He’s the only adult that went after her, strange. Killing alpha was badly timed. He killed her after the destruction of hilltop. If he really changed, he wouldn’t have let that happen. As I say, top 5 character still on the show but terrible guy. Better but not redeemed just yet. I reckon he’ll be redeemed in death. If they go down the death route that is. Frankie should’ve had at least one scene with negan before his death. Even Laura should’ve had a scene with him.
@kryptonianknight2344

Regarding the Alpha situation, he needed to be able to earn her complete trust in order to catch her alone without Beta and the other Whisperers being suspicious especially with Beta breathing down his neck. It unfortunately took longer than what he wanted and it came at a cost but once Alpha was gone, Beta led the Whisperers to their end. I agree that they really should’ve had at least one of the wives or ex saviors like Laura at least confront him instead of just killing off every named savior before so. Not just Alden

I’ve said for the better part of a year that if you’re going to use JDM’s quotes like it’s the word of god you need to take what Sherry’s actress into the same amount. She called it a form of SA, those women, or the ones we were given any sort of arch with, were never able to give enthusiastic consent. We know they had sex bc we see Sherry with a pregnancy test and Dwight’s comment confirms it would have been Negan’s not Dwights. This isn’t the first time they glossed over SA on the show, Shane SA’d Lori in the CDC when he was drunk, what the Governor did to Maggie was SA, what happened to Carl with that Rick rips the dude’s throat out is SA. None of those get properly addressed or talked about except maybe what happened with Maggie. The writers use it as a plot but never follow through with effects of it. If anyone should kill Negan, it’s Sherry.
@nachgeben
@nachgeben 2 года назад
Unfortunately, in that scenario, a lot of those incidents wouldn't. Especially with Carl. Boys are very unlikely to want to talk about sexual abuse. They're only mildly more likely to do so than teenage and adult men, who believe their strength means they'll be made fun of--which they're right. A lot of people would make fun of them over not defending themselves from such a horrific thing, and it's not right. Now for Lori, who I absolutely hate, she was probably afraid because it was Shane of all people, and she'd already "betrayed" Rick (not really tho, obviously, since she thought Rick was dead due to Shane), so it's not surprising that Lori wouldn't drag it out again. It requires a lot of guesswork, but so would these situations need it in real life if you're not the victim or victimizer yourself. "But it's a show!" one might declare. Fans are so happy to praise it for 'realism' right up until it's something they feel entitled to having resolved.

@milou7442 2 года назад
I get where you're coming from! Sooo this is my take on it: in the world of The Walking Dead, murder has become sort of a necessary evil to many- no one does it because they want to, but often they don't see another way to eliminate a threat/keep their people safe. It's of course not a good thing and no one really enjoys it (except maybe sociopaths like the Governor, Gareth etc.) Negan himself even said that he does not like to kill women and children, but will do so if necessary. Like I said, it's a 'necessary evil' in that post-apocolyptic world. Rape... well, it's not that and never will be. It's about hurting people just because and serves absolutely no purpose beyond satisfying a predator's sick needs. That's why so many people are unhappy with how the "Negan's Wives" plotline was done. It was handled a bit better in the comics where most wives actually want to be with him because they want a better life, but in the show... most of them had no choice and genuinely despise Negan, and it just makes him look like a really evil bastard. His murder of Glenn/Abraham was of course awful too, but at least you could somewhat get why he did it- because Rick attacked his group and killed many of his men. So yeah, while most of Negan's actions were awful they at least had some sort of a reason behind them, especially considering the setting, but the whole "rape" part just seemed unnecessary and as if the writer's really wanted Negan to be seen as an irredeamable bastard,,,, that they then wanted to redeem lol

I honestly didn’t know that people really cared about this. Negan was a piece of shit, in every way possible. That isn’t news to me, He had his own rules and they made sense to him. Assuming he did have sex with him (which I always thought was 100% clear) I don’t think he saw it as rape in his eyes. (Obviously it was) Further evidenced by when he killed the guy who tried to rape Sasha. He saw that as rape but didn’t see what he was doing as that. It’s kind of a major part of Negan’s character: hypocrisy. For some reason we as a society especially in the west are perfectly ok with someone bashing someone’s brains in in fiction, but we’re not ok with rape. I’m not even getting into the whole debate of which is worse. But obviously they’re both atrocious things in the real world. But in fiction one seems to be held to a different standard. Totally agree they definitely should address this though.

(Not saying you specifically, more so the general “you”) I get it’s all subjective but the point stands: they’re both horrible acts regardless of your personal opinion. Murder is horrific, but I guess the difference between murder and rape is that murder can sometimes be justified, but rape never can be. And you're point about Negan being a hypocrite is spot on but I think that went over a lot of people's head. It's also easy to confuse the comics and the TV show at times. I remember disliking Sherry on first viewing of the TV show due to her being much more unlikeable in the comics and I was mixing the two up in my head. In the comics Negan is displayed as far more of a Joker instead of just a prick, he's far more reasonable to the point where he doesn't retaliate when Rick smacks him up and more importantly in the comics Negan's wives seem to have had more of a choice and only did it to not have to work for food.

I could of sworn I remember him saying he always liked the idea of having multiple wives, though I might be merging that with the comics. It is strange, since he himself said he despises rape near the end of season 7, yet multiple times has said he screws his wives. Maybe it is like a Berlin situation on money heist/La casa de papel where some of the women slept with him out of fear, and he allowed it, but that still feels wrong and sounds wrong. I admit I like Negan, and they did do a good job on explains a lot of his reasons on doing what he does, like killing a few of the many to send a message, and his fondness for looking after kids, a sentiment shared by his Lt. Gavin. I do think they do need to address this, because it always bothers me they never bring it up. Here’s a question though, when sherry comes on to FTWD, is it worth watching? Nothing really to address. Such scenarios would be common in a post-apocalyptic setting of any kind as they have been throughout history for the same reasons- exchange of sex or other services for security and protection, and even power over others, and status as the mate of the powerful. And it will still be almost always men offering that protection, power and status, but perhaps as heirs of more enlightened times their mates will come in greater variety than just women, and occasionally some powerful woman will have whatever harem she wants as well. Michonne could have pulled that off. The motives of the harem members will be as varied as they always were- survival, food, comfort, money, social status, power over others, and they will compete with one another and ally with one another to exclude newcomers or others not desired for inclusion, as has always been done. In a post-apocalyptic setting as these new social institutions and behaviors are being established, hereditary status and legal no option won't yet play into their circumstances, but could do so eventually, so the choices people make could really affect any heirs they have pro or con. If harem membership or other service role is the only way to avoid death, of course, then it's also the only way to even have heirs. But in these early times, there's a lot of choice. Those who can kill walkers for themselves will have more options than those who need help. Or, at least, all benefit from fellow combatants, but pulling your weight in walker-killing gets you more status than just waiting for help.

I've seen some stans take it so far as to even deny the existence of coercive rape (all over a fictional character...yikes) ill never come around to negans redemption because a lot of the evil shit he did gets swept under the rug. i find a lot of his current writing to be forced. it feels like the writers have to do the absolute most to make him look good because they don't want to confront the possibility of their golden character being a rapist (which he is). id be more open to his character if his previous actions were addressed

I feel like he should just acknowledge that Negan did sexually assault them by basically giving them no other reasonable choice I don't think that really "ruins his redemption", it's clear it came from a place of ego and show of power rather than just pure violence and pure power as a more "brutal rape" would be, he was high on his own ego and let himself be convinced that he had earned it, considering the trauma and harsh place the walking dead world is I don't exactly judge him too harshly on it, trauma can lead us in really weird paths, thus why a lot of male rape victims end up being rapists themselves, but I'd prefer if the show acknowledged the monster he was before trying to redeem him. I still think they could have redeemed him properly, as long as they don't pretend that he was just a big meanie who had to get shit done like Rick was, except meaner. He was clearly a monster.

I at first thought that Negan's view of rape is skewed. Of course you would view a woman who is tied up and defenseless and a man forcing himself on her is rape, that's why he killed Dave for it. But his wives probably just didn't put up a fight because their actual husbands were at risk, so he doesn't view it as rape. That's the darker side of it. But now that we're seeing a new "redeemed" Negan, I'm choosing to go with he didn't have sex with any of them, and more than likely just liked them to just be around him because they were pretty women. Like he said to Eugene: "No sex, that is a grave no no. However, you can have a little dinner, some drinks, share a few laughs...there is nothing like beautiful women who smell good to make you feel human again." I would like to think he applies this to himself as well. Also, when Dwight and Sherry are having the conversation in the hallway and he asks her if Negan is treating her good and she says yes. Ofc, she could just be saying that so Dwight doesn't worry, but like I said, I'm choosing to believe. Also, all the times he makes sexual remarks about women is probably just to rile others up/ talking out of his ass In conclusion, if Negan is actually as good as the show is trying to make him, I think his his harem is nothing more than young pretty women he feels bad for. He probably views them as too weak to fight and too pretty to do any hard work, so their job is to just sit there all day and look pretty for him. At the expense of their husbands of course. This is sounding kind of like I'm in denial but since nothing is confirmed I can be as delusional as I want lol, Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

Negan used coercive control over the women in his harem, which is a more covert form of violence and abuse. Notice that when he talked to Amber about how she can leave if she wants to, the tone of his voice was threatening. He manipulated her into staying by saying that there were plenty of girls waiting to take her place, meaning that she's expendable. For one, the scene where Sherry is being checked for pregnancy (Dwight witnesses this, looking upset, and the connection is implied.) For another, Negan offers Dwight the opportunity to sleep with one of his wives. Now... again... it's also implied that Sherry might have feelings for Negan, so maybe that's why they were sleeping together, so what JDM tweeted could still be true. That's why he asked her to be his wife- her "choice" was basically to marry him or die. She was terrified of him and probably wouldn't have agreed if her life didn't depend on it. Rape means i say know, he does continue anyways and this kind of behavior would be pretty out of character for negan. I bet he slept with his wifes yet i don’t think any of them dared to tell him „no i don’t want to sleep with you“ i don’t think he would have punished them for doing so either since as we saw he really hates raping as a whole! Them being scared of him and him knowingly or unknowingly using it to sleep with them is another story! Yet that aint no rape or abuse! Its like you said an asshole not respecting women! Which is something to criticize but not even close to rape or abuse

"The idea of women being uncomfortable with sleeping with a man but lets it happen shouldn't be considered as rape!" Sir, please... Have you considered that those women were being threatened and coerced? Clearly you did not. Read the things you type before posting.

Interesting that people focus so much on this and literally never talk about how Alpha literally forces Negan to have sex with her at gunpoint…

Yeah, i believe the writers didnt know where Negan was going so they wrote themselves into a corner with the harem but indeed they showed no rape so they could sell shit about it i guess or even come out and say he was a bad man at the moment and people can change, that it was a thing he could never forgive himself for, i mean if we can accept all the shit he did even torture, murder of innocents and slave Daryl, why is rape different? Because its a touchy subject in our society today? Thats quite selective dont you think? Even as a villain Negan managed to be loved and hated which is always good in a show, the actor did a great job the writers too, i swear to god at some point i though they were about to write maggie and negan into a relationship the way their scenes played out but thank god they didnt , i dont think it could ever work, what came next for negan was forced and rushed i think but whatever. Maggie's writing was wobbly at best in my opinion, battle hardened and mentally strong one moment, a complete crying screaming wreck the other...
